  • Publication number: 20120106837
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a system and method for performing foreground/background separation on an input image. The method pre-classifies (1010, 1020) an input visual element in the input image as one of a first element type and a second element type, dependent upon a predetermined characteristic. The method performs a first foreground/background separation (1030) on the input visual element that has been pre-classified as the first element type, wherein the first foreground/background separation step is based on colour data and brightness data of the input visual element. The method performs a second foreground/background separation (1040) on the input visual element that has been pre-classified as the second element type, wherein the second foreground/background separation step is based on colour data, brightness data, and texture of the input visual element.

  • Patent number: 8169933
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for reconfiguration of a communication environment based on loading requirements. Network operations are monitored and analyzed to determine loading balance across the network or a portion thereof. Where warranted, the network is reconfigured to balance the load across multiple network entities. For example, in a cellular-type of network, traffic loads and throughput requirements are analyzed for the access points and their user equipment. Where loading imbalances occur, the cell coverage areas of one or more access points can be reconfigured to alleviate bottlenecks or improve balancing.

  • Publication number: 20120101991
Abstract: A map-reduce compatible distributed file system that consists of successive component layers that each provide the basis on which the next layer is built provides transactional read-write-update semantics with file chunk replication and huge file-create rates. Containers provide the fundamental basis for data replication, relocation, and transactional updates. A container location database allows containers to be found among all file servers, as well as defining precedence among replicas of containers to organize transactional updates of container contents. Volumes facilitate control of data placement, creation of snapshots and mirrors, and retention of a variety of control and policy information. Also addressed is the use of distributed transactions in a map-reduce system; the use of local and distributed snapshots; replication, including techniques for reconciling the divergence of replicated data after a crash; and mirroring.

  • Publication number: 20120102389
Abstract: A method and system for rendering web content on an end device is disclosed. An encoding server parses the web content to determine a plurality of markup tags in a native markup language associated with the web content. On determining the plurality of markup tags in the native markup language, the encoding server encodes the plurality of markup tags using a rendering markup language to form one or more packages. The rendering markup language defines a set of markup tags in the rendering markup language for each package based on the capabilities and configurations of the end device. The one or more packages are then decoded by a thin client by interpreting the set of markup tags in the rendering markup language. Since the thin client only decodes the set of tags in the rendering markup language, processing power required at the thin client is significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 8165013
Abstract: A networked computer system in which a gateway is selected for efficient transmission over a network using a layered protocol. When a transmission over the network fails, information at multiple protocol layers indicates the usability of the gateway through which the failed transmission was made. In a layered protocol with an application or connection layer, a path layer and a link layer, information at the link layer is used to determine whether retransmission through the same gateway should be attempted. Information at the path layer is used to determine whether the gateway is faulty. Information from the application or connection layer is used to determine whether responses are received to transmissions. These determinations are used in setting the status of the gateway, which in turn is used to prioritize gateways when selecting a gateway for future transmissions.
