  • Publication number: 20140015418
Abstract: The invention is based on the idea that a lighting system can utilize its sensing and control functionalities to offer dynamic load management (e.g. demand response) services in an electrical grid. The present invention optimizes dimming levels of lighting sources of a lighting system by determining a solution for an optimization problem directed to determining new dimming levels such that power consumption of the lighting devices is reduced. During the determining the solution for the optimization problem, the present invention may take into account specific guarantees on illumination rendering, acceptable to different users, and differing illumination requirements in different spaces or rooms. By the lighting control of the present invention, predictable and effective load reductions may be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20140010135
Abstract: One or more mobile devices and a cloud server computing device are utilized to provide Internet access to one or more client computing devices. One of the clients is designated as a Wi-Fi access point. The Wi-Fi access point implements a reverse-infrastructure Wi-Fi mode which tethers available mobile devices and other clients to the access point. The cloud server periodically computes an optimal number of the mobile devices to be used for data striping, and transmits a webpage to a requesting client by striping data associated with the webpage across the optimal number of the mobile devices.

  • Patent number: 8626866
Abstract: A network caching system has a multi-protocol caching filer coupled to an origin server to provide storage virtualization of data served by the filer in response to data access requests issued by multi-protocol clients over a computer network. The multi-protocol caching filer includes a file system configured to manage a sparse volume that “virtualizes” a storage space of the data to thereby provide a cache function that enables access to data by the multi-protocol clients. To that end, the caching filer further includes a multi-protocol engine configured to translate the multi-protocol client data access requests into generic file system primitive operations executable by both the caching filer and the origin server.

  • Patent number: 8621755
Abstract: A plastic cutlery item molded from a plastic material, such as polystyrene, having a metallic coating that imparts to this cutlery item the appearance of metal cutlery or silverware. In one embodiment the plastic cutlery or tableware items are molded using injection molding techniques, and subjected to a vacuum metallizing process in an individualized non-contiguous manner, where a thin metallic layer is deposited on at least one of their surfaces. The resultant items simulate the appearance of metal cutlery or tableware. In one embodiment of the invention the plastic cutlery or tableware articles are molded from a clear polystyrene resin and are coated with a thin stainless steel layer through vacuum sputtering deposition on only one of the sides. The abrasion resistance of the metallic coating can be enhanced by subjecting the articles to a post-metallizing holding period or by applying a clear protective overcoat.

  • Publication number: 20140006685
Abstract: A storage controller is configured to implement an atomic storage operation comprising a plurality of separate storage operations on a non-volatile storage medium. The storage controller may store persistent indicators to identify data that pertains to the atomic storage operation. An invalid shutdown may occur before the atomic storage operation is complete. A restart and recovery operation comprises a first scan of the non-volatile storage medium to identify data of the failed atomic storage operation. A physical trim note is stored on the non-volatile storage medium to identify the data of the failed atomic storage operation. The data may be identified by media address. Storage metadata is reconstructed in a second scan, which excludes the data and/or operations of the failed atomic storage operation.
