  • Publication number: 20140379948
Abstract: A computer program product for processing input/output (I/O) data is provided for performing a method, which includes receiving a control word having an indirect data address including a starting location of a list of storage addresses, gathering the data and transmitting gathered data to a control unit in the I/O processing system. Gathering includes accessing an entry of the list, the entry located at an entry storage location and including an address. Based on the entry of the list indicating that the address is a data address, data is gathered from a data storage location, and a next entry of the list is accessed. Based on the entry of the list indicating that the address is an address of a next entry of the list, the next entry of the list is obtained from another storage location that is located non-contiguously to the entry storage location.

  • Publication number: 20140273249
Abstract: High range activated clotting time (HR-ACT) tests detect blood clotting time in blood samples which have high levels of heparin. Reagents such as calcium chloride and kaolin within the test apparatus trigger clotting. The cartridge is treated with a strong surface treatment process, such as an atmospheric plasma treatment, to increase the hydrophilic property of the test chamber, there may be a significant reduction in the kaolin concentration required to activate the blood sample and initiate the coagulation process. The kaolin concentration may be further reduced if the buffer component used in the buffer saline contains phosphate. The reduction of the kaolin concentration allows more calcium to be released from the kaolin to participate in the clotting process. The combined effect of adding a surface treatment to the cartridge to increase the hydrophilic property of reaction chamber and adding phosphate into buffered saline allows for clot detection of blood samples containing 5˜6 U/mL heparin.

  • Publication number: 20140186266
Abstract: Novel compounds which are derivatives of tetra-O-methyl nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), as well as pharmaceutically acceptable salts, solvates, and stereoisomers thereof are provided. These NDGA derivatives have a nitroimidazole moiety and these derivatives show preferential toxicity to hypoxic cells as hypoxic cytotoxins. Their cytotoxicity toward hypoxic cells is a result of abstraction of hydrogen from target molecules by free radicals formed in the reduction of the nitro group. This makes the disclosed compounds an effective anti cancer drug because hypoxic cells are generally considered to be more resistant to anti cancer drugs than normal cells. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds, as well as methods of use, and treatment for cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer and prostate cancer, are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20140065699
Abstract: The present invention provides expression vectors useful for high-throughput screening of gene libraries. In a specific embodiment, an expression vector comprising (a) the Rop gene operatively linked to the trp promoter-operator; (b) a purification tag sequence and a protease cleavage site downstream of the Rop gene; and (d) a multiple cloning site downstream of the protease cleavage site, wherein the insertion of a heterologous gene of interest into the multiple cloning site and subsequent expression thereof in a host cell produces a high yield of a fusion protein comprising the Rop protein and the protein encoded by the heterologous gene of interest without the need of chemical inducers, temperature shifts, or growth medium alterations to initiate protein synthesis, and wherein the fusion protein controls plasmid replication at temperatures below about 30° C. but exhibits runaway plasmid replication when cultured at about 37° C.

  • Patent number: 8634481
Abstract: In a wireless communication system using multiple antennas at the transmitter and multiple antennas at the receiver, a so called multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, a substantial improvement in capacity over the case of no feedback can be achieved using considerably less bandwidth than is required to feedback the channel estimate or channel statistics, by supplying as feedback for each data substream of an overall data stream an indicator of a rate and/or an indicator of a gain for transmission of that data substream. The indicator of the rate and/or the indicator of the gain may be the rate and/or gain directly or an encoded representation of the rate and/or gain. Typically, the best performance is achieved if indicators of both the rate and the gain are fed back. If the invention is implemented for wireless systems, then typically for each data substream there is a separate, independent antenna.
