  • Patent number: 6014299
Abstract: A device and method for protecting a CPU from being damaged by overrating voltage or overrating current. The means for protecting the CPU is to detect the working voltage and working current provided to the CPU, to compare the working voltage and working current with the voltage and current settings, and to determine whether overrating voltage or/and overrating current is generated. If overrating voltage or/and overrating current occurs, a control signal is sent to the soft switch of an ATX power supply, a first switch, or a second switch in the device in order to cut the supplying route of the power supply. Therefore, the CPU is not broken down due to overrating voltage or/and overrating current. Detection means for detecting the breakdown of a switch-type stabilizing controller of the power supply to the CPU are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5894350
Abstract: This invention describes a method of making intra-field corrections to the alignment of a step and repeat projection system used to expose image fields on an integrated circuit wafer. A first pattern having first image fields and first alignment marks is formed on a wafer. A mask having a second image field and second alignment marks is projected on the wafers, having a layer of photoresist formed thereon, using light which will not expose the photoresist. The relative location of the second alignment marks to the second image field is the same as the relative location of the first alignment marks to the first image field. A detectors, comprising an interferometer, determines the displacement vector between the first alignment marks and the corresponding second alignment marks. The displacement vectors are fed to a computer which computes a translation correction, a rotation correction, and a magnification correction for the alignment of the mask to the wafer.

  • Patent number: 5863629
Abstract: The copying system comprises a plurality of units in a stacked configuration, where each unit comprises two or several sheets of carbonless, repositionable self-adhesive paper. Image transfer upon writing pressure results in copies of the message made in a single unit but not on subsequent units in the stack. Image transfer is controlled by regulating the microcapsule size of the carbonless copying component on the first sheet in each unit and the basis weight of the last sheet of paper in each unit.

  • Patent number: 5648774
Abstract: The present invention relates to variable length coding (VLC). Variable length coding is a widely-used method in data compression, especially, in the applications of video data communication and storage. Many international standards have adopted this technique in video data compression, for example, JPEG, MPEG, CCITT H.261 and so on. Various implementation methods have been proposed for variable length coding. Most of those methods implement the coding with two-field codes. That is, a code is represented by a code word and a code length. However, in this invention, a three-field representation is used for each code. In comparison with the two-field method, this method not only reduces the storage requirements of the code-book but also reduces the hardware or cost to implement a variable length encoder. Moreover, variable length coding can be implemented using both parallel VLC encoders and serial VLC encoders.

  • Patent number: 5461422
Abstract: An improved video encoder performs quantization after run length conversion. This is in contrast to the conventional encoder wherein quanization takes place before run-level conversion. The inventive encoder design provides a unique look forward process for controlling the number of run-level pairs and thus the number of coded bits. In addition, the stringent speed requirements on the quantizer are reduced because only run-level pairs rather than all DCT coefficients are quantized.

  • Patent number: 5056081
Abstract: A system and method for erasing data on an optical storage disk of the type which is responsive to light of first selected characteristics to produce a detectable physical change in the disk and is further responsive to light of second selected characteristics to reverse the physical change. Erasure is effected by rotating the disk proximate a linear light source capable of projecting a curtain of light having said second selective characteristics onto the disk. Uniform erasure of the data may be obtained by modifying the light flux which is delivered to the disk as a function of distance from the center of the disk. In particular, by increasing the flux or flux density which strikes the disk proximate its periphery relative to that which strikes near the center, the unit dosage received by any portion of the disk may be equalized.

  • Patent number: 4609978
Abstract: In a lighting apparatus which illuminates light ray from an illumination light source through a light distribution lens onto an illuminated surface, an inner surface of the light distribution lens is formed as continuous surface to receive incident ray in the perpendicular direction, and an outer surface of the lens for refracting outgoing ray is formed based on the equations which are made in consideration of the illuminance on the illuminated surface, thereby uniform illuminance is obtained on the illuminated surface.

  • Patent number: 4489406
Abstract: A high density optical storage system employing a laser beam for reading data in a track on a rotating optical disk containing a large number of closely spaced concentric tracks. When a short seek operation is to be provided, track following is temporarily suspended for an appropriate time period during which specially shaped waveform is applied to the galvanometer-controlled mirror in the path of the beam. This specially shaped waveform is a doublet comprising a pulse of one polarity followed by a pulse of the opposite polarity. The duration and amplitude of these opposite polarity pulses are chosen based on the number of tracks that the beam is to be moved and the mechanical characteristics of the system so that the galvanometer mirror will accurately move the beam the requested number of tracks. After movement of the beam has been completed, operation automatically returns to track following.
