  • Patent number: 5419830
Abstract: Nitrogenous compounds especially bases such as ammonia vapor are used to control the operation of a hydrocracker or catalytic dewaxer. Catalyst activity and selectivity may be controlled by addition of the base to the feed, for example, to control the balance between isomerization and hydrocracking in an operation using a zeolite beta catalyst. Runaway conditions may be controlled by the addition of nitrogenous compounds to regulate the temperature profile within the reactor.

  • Patent number: 5418022
Abstract: Packaging, particularly for medical supplies and devices, is made from spunbonded olefin sheet material. At least a portion of the olefin sheet material is deformed to increase its surface area by between 4 and 60 percent, so as to create a pocket of a dimension sufficient to envelope the medical supply or device. After the medical supply is placed within the pocket, it is covered and sealed by another sheet having microbial barrier characteristics. Even though deformed, the spunbonded olefin packaging possesses the ability to allow quick passage of sterilizing gas, yet is resistant to penetration by contaminating microorganisms.

  • Patent number: 5413423
Abstract: A dot matrix printer having a print head having a plurality of print solenoids. The print head is carried on a print head carriage driven by a carriage drive arrangement. A print timing means supplies a sequence of print timing pulses as said print head traverses a print medium. A power supply supplies a print voltage to the print solenoids in the print head. A drive pulse circuit responds to each of said print timing pulses for producing a solenoid enable pulse of a duration which varies inversely with the magnitude of said print voltage. The drive pulse circuit utilizes a dual slope integration with a first period integrating a fixed voltage for a fixed time and a second period integrating the varying print voltage for a time which varies with the magnitude of the voltage and provides automatic adjustment of the total print timing signal.

  • Patent number: 5413699
Abstract: A process for reducing NOx emissions and an FCC process using same as a flue gas cleanup stage are disclosed. Gas containing NOx and entrained catalyst fines is passed up through a bed of catalyst at a sufficient velocity to expand and fluidize the catalyst bed. Particulates deposited on the catalyst are abraided or elutriated away by fluidization, preventing fouling of the DeNOx catalyst. A low pressure drop design, with vertical, perforate gas distributors covered by the bed is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5410614
Abstract: A preprocessing method for smoothing handwritten Chinese characters before subjecting the same to computerized character recognition and/or other applications. The method disclosed in the present invention is a run-based smoothing method which takes advantages of the unique characteristics of the building blocks of Chinese characters, which consist essentially of vertical, horizontal, and tilted strokes. Accordingly, the two-dimensional array of pixels representing a digitized character are first converted into a run information map which will be repeatedly scanned and subject to three main smoothing treatments: (1) empty run filling, (2) small triangular area filling, and (3) filled run deleting. A unique protocol is developed for effectuating each of the smoothing steps. After each treatment, the run information map is updated, and the treatment steps are repeated until no more empty run filling or filled run deleting can be found, or until a specified number of cycles are exceeded.

  • Patent number: 5410148
Abstract: A switch system for an industrial machine is described which combines both optical and capacitance switches in a switch assembly. A photo-optical switch is positioned in each assembly to provide an output signal upon the introduction of a human hand into an opening formed therein, and a capacitance sensitive touch plate switch is positioned within the opening to provide an output signal upon contact by a human hand. Circuitry responds to the substantially simultaneous activation of both the optical and capacitance switches within the switch assembly and produces an output signal. Typically two of such switch assemblies are used to control power to an industrial machine.

  • Patent number: 5407841
Abstract: A complementary bipolar CMOS fabrication method uses a common deposition for both the CMOS gate contacts, and as a sacrificial layer for patterning bipolar devices. The deposition is removed from the bipolar devices and, after implanting base and emitter regions, is replaced with a separate emitter contact. Prior to its removal the sacrificial layer is coated with an oxidation resistant layer that imparts a desirable rounded shape to the edge of a thermal oxide layer that is grown around the bipolar emitter area. Common mask and implant steps are also used to fabricate lightly doped CMOS drains together with bipolar base-link regions, and CMOS source/drain regions together with bipolar external base regions. The fabrication technique also facilitates the fabrication of capacitors with no additional steps required, and includes an improved NiCr resistor contact method.

  • Patent number: 5406446
Abstract: A thin-film bypass capacitor is fabricated by forming a plurality of through holes through the thickness of a nonconductive base substrate and filling the through holes with a conductive material to form ground vias and power vias. A sequence of back side metalization layers are applied to the back side surface of the base substrate. A sequence of bottom contact layers are applied to the front side surface of the base substrate. A bottom contact power terminal is formed and a bottom contact metalization layer is applied to the surface of the bottom contact layers. A portion of the metalization layer is removed and an insulating layer is formed on the surface of the bottom contact metalization layer. A ground metalization feedthrough and a power metalization feedthrough are formed at the surface of the insulating layer. A sequence of top contact layers are applied to the surface of the insulating layer and a front side ground terminal and front side power terminal are formed.

  • Patent number: 5404265
Abstract: A bypass capacitor for use with an integrated circuit module, and method of making the same, are shown. The integrated circuit module comprises an integrated circuit "chip" mounted in opposing relationship to a carrier substrate and having a plurality of interconnects, such as solder bumps or wire interconnects, for providing signal lines and supplying power to the chip. Some of the interconnects are, instead, used to form capacitors such that bypass capitance is placed in close proximity to the chip, while not using up valuable real estate on the chip or on the carrier substrate. Various embodiments of such bypass capacitors are shown.
