  • Patent number: 5374806
Abstract: An electric heat sealer comprises a pen-shaped housing including a power supply unit and an end portion, preferably in the form of a tapered socket, containing an electric heat seal unit. The heat seal unit includes a heat sealing tip projecting from an opening in the end portion of the housing. The heat seal unit is movable axially within the housing end portion and includes an electric contact connected to the electric heating element and arranged to engage an electric terminal on the housing to complete an electrical circuit between the power supply unit and the electric heating element. A spring disposed between the one end of the housing and the heat seal unit axially biases the heat seal unit toward the opening in the end portion of the housing sufficiently to separate the contact on the heat seal unit from the terminal on the housing.

  • Patent number: 5367534
Abstract: A flow control method (200) is suitable for use with a synchronous modem (101). The modem clocks data signals (107) from the terminal under control of a clock signal (109) supplied by the modem. The clock signal operates at a clock rate. The modem stores the data signals in a buffer (111), and thereupon transmits the data signals to a channel, the channel operating at a channel rate. When the quantity of data signals stored in the buffer exceeds a maximum threshold, the modem removes the clock signal from the terminal, thereby interrupting the flow of data signals from the terminal. When the quantity of data signals stored in the buffer is less than a minimum threshold, the modem again applies the clock signal to the terminal, thereby restoring the flow of data signals from the terminal.

  • Patent number: 5365237
Abstract: A camera system in which microwave radiation from objects in a field-of-view is collected by an antenna having beam directions which are a function of the beam frequency. The collected radiation is used to modulate an optical beam to impose upon the beam spectral components which are functions of the frequencies of the microwave radiation. The modulated beam is then analyzed by an optical spectrum analyzer to produce an image of objects in the field of view. In a simple embodiment of the invention a one dimensional image is produced. This one dimensional image can be converted to a two dimensional image by panning the camera system or mounting the camera on a moving platform. In this preferred embodiment the spectrum analyzer comprises an angle-frequency filter (preferably an etalon). The portion of the modulated beam passing through the etalon is directed in a number of directions, the directions being a function of the spectral components of the modulated beam.

  • Patent number: 5358858
Abstract: A process for preparing phycoerythrin from Bangia atropurpurea or Porphyra angusta is disclosed. Spores of Bangia atropurpurea or Porphyra angusta, derived from their thalli, are cultivated under a controlled condition to germinate filaments. Phycoerythrin is then resulted from the extraction of filaments which are processed through drying powder-mill grinding, water or phosphate percolating and ammonium sulfate salting-out. The phycoerythrin is further purified by gel filtration. This process yields the phycoerythrin of 99% purity.

  • Patent number: 5351559
Abstract: A T-shape vortex shedder comprises a bluff body having a width W between upper and lower ends thereof and an extended plate having a length L in the fluid flow direction which is perpendicular to the bluff body. The bluff body and the extended plate form a T-shape vortex shedder with a T-shape cross section. When this T-shape vortex shedder is placed in a fluid motion within a circular pipe, the bluff body is located upstream of the fluid flow, and the extended plate is located downstream of the fluid flow, such that vortex shedding is produced at the upper and lower ends of the bluff body. The T-shape vortex shedder is characterized in that the L/W ratio is approximately 1.56.about.2.0, and the fluid flow produces steady vortex shedding when the Reynolds number of the fluid flow is approximately 2.4.times.10.sup.3 .about.3.2.times.10.sup.4.
