  • Publication number: 20160060912
Abstract: A vehicle lock and personal protection baton uses a telescoping construction to combine an elongated base and an elongated extension. The elongated extension slides within the elongated base in order to switch between configurations, specifically for use as a lock or for use as a protection baton. A locking mechanism couples the elongated extension with the elongated base, and a user can easily twist the locking mechanism to allow or prevent sliding of the elongated extension with respect to the elongated base. The elongated extension includes an end segment with one or more intermediate segments to allow for greater length. The end segment is slidably engaged with the intermediate segment, allowing the end segment to telescope with the intermediate segment. A first brace and second brace are connected to opposite ends of the telescoping body and inserted between a door frame and handle to lock a vehicle from the interior.

  • Patent number: 9239576
Abstract: Methods and apparatus to apply multiple trip limits to a device in a process control system are disclosed. An example method involves monitoring a value of a parameter associated with the operation of the device and receiving an input indicative of an operational state of the device, where a first input indicates a first operational state and a second input indicates a second operational state. If the first input is received, comparing via a function block the value of the parameter to a first trip limit, and if the second input is received, comparing via the function block the value of the parameter to a second trip limit, and implementing a response based on the comparison.

  • Publication number: 20150375951
Abstract: A method for bonding the tail of a convolutely wound log to the body is provided. The method comprises the use of a nonadhesive phase-change material to mechanically bond the tail to the wound log. The nonadhesive phase-change material is heated to an amorphous state prior to its application. Once applied to the wound log, the nonadhesive phase-change material mechanical bonds with the tail and wound log and as heat is lost, changes to a non-amorphous state. The mechanical bond can be selectively reversed through the application of a strength degradation accelerator.

  • Patent number: 9181953
Abstract: A method for improving the energy efficiency of a pump system. The method includes measuring an instantaneous power consumption of the pump system, measuring an instantaneous fluid flow rate of the pump system, and determining an instantaneous specific energy consumption (SEC) of the pump system based on the instantaneous power consumption and the instantaneous fluid flow rate. The method then adjusts the speed of a pump in response to the determined SEC. The above steps may be performed a number of times to seek a reduced value of the instantaneous SEC of the pump system.

  • Patent number: 9183843
Abstract: Techniques for combining the results of multiple recognizers in a distributed speech recognition architecture. Speech data input to a client device is encoded and processed both locally and remotely by different recognizers configured to be proficient at different speech recognition tasks. The client/server architecture is configurable to enable network providers to specify a policy directed to a trade-off between reducing recognition latency perceived by a user and usage of network resources. The results of the local and remote speech recognition engines are combined based, at least in part, on logic stored by one or more components of the client/server architecture. An indication of the availability of the remote speech recognition to perform speech recognition at a point in time may be provided to a user of the client device via a user interface of the client device.

  • Patent number: 9169767
Abstract: A device for at least partially blocking an opening includes a first body, a second body rotatably mounted to the first body and a compressible seal extending from the first body. The seal includes a first portion, a plate having a hole at one end of the first portion, and a second portion extending away from the plate. A hollow shaft extends from the second body and through the first body, the first portion, the hole in the plate, and into the second portion. The shaft has a shoulder in the second portion that is wider than the hole in the plate, and moving the shaft relative to the first body compresses the second body until the shoulder reaches the plate and then compresses the first body. Such compression expands the first and/or second portions and presses them against the inside of the opening to form a seal.
