  • Publication number: 20140163754
Abstract: A method includes: determining a total power load from an electrical power consumption entity configured to receive all or a portion of the total power load from each of (i) an alternative energy source (“AES”), (ii) a power grid, and (iii) a rechargeable energy storage device. The AES and the power grid are connected using a reverse power relay. The method also includes: for a first time period, determining a first power supply from the AES. The first power supply is affected by natural events that are uncontrolled by a user. The method also includes in accordance with a determination that, during the first time period, the power supply from the AES exceeds the power load: storing an excess portion of the power supply in the energy storage device, without releasing electrical power from the AES to the power grid. The excess portion is less than the energy storage device's maximum capacity.

  • Publication number: 20140163755
Abstract: A method for improving electrical generator efficiency using a rechargeable battery includes, at a computer system, determining a load from an electrical-power consumption entity for a prospective time period; and calculating a first supply from a renewable electrical power supply source for the same prospective time period. The renewable electrical-power supply source comprises one or more photovoltaic devices, and the renewable electrical-power supply source is independent from a power grid. The method also includes quantifying a deficiency in an ability of the first supply to satisfy the load during the prospective time period; and in accordance with the quantification of the deficiency in the ability of the first supply to satisfy the load during the prospective time period: optimizing a spinning reserve schedule for a plurality of power generators to thereby make up the deficiency. The optimization of the spinning reserve schedule improves the non-renewable energy consumption.

  • Publication number: 20140163756
Abstract: A method includes: calculating a load prediction arising from an power consumption entity over a prospective time period; calculating a predicted off-grid power supply from an off-grid power supply; minimizing, for a respective time interval, a calculated amount of electrical-power to import from a power grid, in accordance with output from a cost function; and, for at least one interval, importing, from the power grid, the corresponding calculated amount of electrical-power corresponding to the at least one interval. The cost function uses: (i) a multi-component time of use tariff schedule associated with the power grid that includes a first power rate during a prospective time period and second power rate during a second time period, (ii) the load prediction over the prospective time period, (iii) the predicted off-grid electrical-power supply over the prospective time period, (iv) a state of a rechargeable battery.

  • Publication number: 20140150348
Abstract: For sealing a door, a jamb interface with a specified width connects to a jamb interior face of a jamb along a longitudinal axis of the jamb interior face. The jamb interface includes a plurality of fingers with a proximal edge of each of the fingers in the range of 4 to 6.5 centimeters (cm) from an intersection of the jamb interface and a flap. Each finger has a specified finger height in the range of 1 to 1.5 cm. Each finger is separated from adjacent fingers by a specified spacing height in the range of 1 to 1.5 cm.

  • Patent number: 8718403
Abstract: The position of a feature within an image is determined by determining an initial estimate of the feature position to within a fraction of a pixel, translating the feature by an amount equal to that fraction of a pixel, determining a further estimate of the translated feature position to within a fraction of a pixel and summing the pixel fraction of the previous estimate with the further estimate of the position to arrive at a refined estimate of the feature position.

  • Publication number: 20140095207
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for displaying information to a patient in a hospital setting. A mobile device collects credentials from a patient. A request for a server to authenticate the patient based on the credentials collected from the patient, and upon authenticating the patient, to reply with patient information requested by the patient is generated. The collected credentials and the request are transmitted to the server. The requested patient information is received by the mobile device.

  • Publication number: 20130205332
Abstract: There is provided a content automation system and a method for use by the content automation system for issuing a content management message for use in a program stream. In one implementation, such a content automation system comprises a processor and a memory, and a stream messaging module residing in the memory. The stream messaging module is configured to issue the content management message by embedding a command sequence as metadata in a container data structure, and inserting the container data structure into the program stream. The command sequence authorizes a replacement of program stream content.

  • Publication number: 20130134094
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for removing contaminants from wastewater with a high salinity content are provided. The methods include injecting a flocculant and other agents and mixing it with the wastewater. The mixture is held in a clarifying tank. The resulting clarified product is filtered through a micro filter. In the final stage, the micro filter output is passed through a series of reverse osmosis membrane. To present a stream with the appropriate salinity for the reverse osmosis filter, the micro filter output is mixed with previously cleaned water to reduce the concentration of total dissolved solids.
