  • Patent number: 8862393
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to systems, methods and applications utilizing the convergence of any combination of the following three technologies: wireless positioning or localization technology, wireless communications technology and sensor technology. In particular, certain embodiments of the present invention relate to a remote device that includes a sensor for determining or measuring a desired parameter, a receiver for receiving position data from the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite system, a processor for determining whether or not alert conditions are present and a wireless transceiver for transmitting the measured parameter data and the position data to a central station, such as an application service provider (ASP). The ASP, in turn, may communicate the measured data, position data and notification of any alerts to an end user via an alert device. The present invention also relates to various applications and systems utilizing the capabilities of such a device.

  • Patent number: 8078875
Abstract: An article identification method can comprise: determining a signature from an article based upon an intrinsic characteristic of the article; and comparing the determined signature to a stored signature. The method can also comprise splitting the determined signature into blocks of contiguous data, performing a comparison operation between each block and respective blocks of the stored signature, and comparing an attribute of a comparison result from each block comparison to an expected attribute of the block comparison to determine a compensation value for use in determining a comparison result. The method can also comprise determining a similarity result between the determined signature and the stored signature, using the compensation value to adjust the determined signature. Thus an article damaged by stretching or shrinking can be successfully identified. Also, a non-linear signature determination can be accommodated without losing identification accuracy.

  • Publication number: 20090303000
Abstract: A system for obtaining a signature a scan area on the surface of an article comprises: a signature generator that generates the signature from scattered coherent radiation detected from a plurality of regions on the surface by using relative motion between the article and a scan head comprising a coherent radiation source and photodetectors to obtain a set of data points comprising a group of data points from each region; an imaging detector that captures a sequence of images of the surface during the relative motion; and a processor that calculates the instantaneous velocity of the relative motion; whereby the signature generator uses the instantaneous velocity to linearise the groups of data point within the set of data points before generating the signature of the article from the set of data points.

  • Publication number: 20090263808
Abstract: The present invention provides new methods for the assessment of cancer risk in the general population. These methods utilize particular alleles of two or more genes, in combination, to identify individuals with increased or decreased risk of cancer. Exemplified is risk assessment for breast cancer in women. In addition, personal history measures such as age and race are used to further refine the analysis. Using such methods, it is possible to reallocate healthcare costs in cancer screening to patient subpopulations at increased cancer risk. It also permits identification of candidates for cancer prophylactic treatment.
