Patent number: 7671647Abstract: A system and method for trimming an unadjusted forward delay of a delay-locked loop (DLL) and trimming a duty cycle of first and second output clock signals provided by a DLL. For trimming an unadjusted forward delay, delay is added to one of a feedback clock signal path and an input clock signal path and a feedback clock signal is provided from the feedback clock signal path and an input clock signal is provided from the input clock signal path for phase comparison. For trimming a duty cycle of first and second output clock signals, one of a first delayed input clock signal and a second delayed input clock signal is delayed. The first and second delayed input clock signals are complementary. The delayed clock signal and the other clock signal are provided as the first and second output clock signals.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2006Date of Patent: March 2, 2010Assignee: Micron Technology, Inc.Inventors: Tyler Gomm, Kang Yong Kim

Publication number: 20100045341Abstract: A method is disclosed for controlling an output impedance of an electronic device of the type having an impedance control terminal to which an external load is to be connected such that a predetermined value of the voltage at the impedance control terminal controls the output impedance of the device. The method is comprised of comparing a reference voltage to a voltage at the impedance control terminal. A variable count signal representing a count value is produced in response to the comparing. The impedance of a variable impedance circuit is varied in response to the count signal, wherein the impedance of the variable impedance circuit controls the voltage at the impedance control terminal. A device connected in parallel with the variable impedance circuit is periodically operated to change (increase/decrease) the impedance of the variable impedance circuit. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 6, 2009Publication date: February 25, 2010Inventor: Kang Yong Kim

Publication number: 20090206898Abstract: Disclosed herein is a VDL/DLL architecture in which the power supply to the VDL, VccVDL, is regulated at least as a function of the entry point of the input signal (ClkIn) into the VDL. Specifically, VccVDL is regulated to be higher when the delay through the VDL is relatively small (when the entry point is toward the right (or minimum delay) edge of the VDL) and is reduced when the delay is relatively high (when the entry point is toward the left (or maximum delay) edge of the VDL). This provides for graduated delays across the stages of the VDL, but without the need to design each stage separately. Other benefits include a VDL/DLL design operable over a wider range of frequencies, and a reduced number of stages, including a reduced number of buffer stages. Moreover, when the disclosed technique is used, buffer stages may be dispensed with altogether.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 29, 2009Publication date: August 20, 2009Applicant: Micron Technology, Inc.Inventors: Tyler Gomm, Kang Yong Kim, Jongtae Kwak

Patent number: 7557628Abstract: An apparatus and method for generating phase related clocks, includes delaying a clock input by a cycle delay magnitude to generate a cycle delay signal and N delay taps is disclosed. Each delay tap has a delay equal to a fractional amount of the cycle delay magnitude. The method further includes delaying the clock input by an alignment magnitude to generate a first aligned phase signal and delaying each of the N delay taps by fractional amounts of the alignment magnitude to generate N phase aligned signals. A feedback loop is closed by a phase comparison between the first aligned phase signal and the cycle delay signal. The phase comparison result is used to adjust the cycle delay magnitude, which adjusts delays of the cycle delay signal and the N delay taps, and adjust the alignment magnitude, which adjusts delays of the first aligned phase signal and the N phase aligned signals.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2007Date of Patent: July 7, 2009Assignee: Micron Technology, Inc.Inventor: Kang Yong Kim

Patent number: 7514954Abstract: An output driver calibration circuit determines calibration values for configuring adjustable impedance output drivers. Output drivers are calibrated by generating a first variable count in response to comparing a reference voltage to a first voltage at a calibration terminal when an external load is connected. A first pull-up impedance circuit is varied in response to a first variable count and varying an impedance in a second variable pull-up impedance circuit in response to the first variable count. A second variable count is generated responsive to comparing the reference voltage to a second voltage at a reference node between the second variable pull-up impedance circuit and is serially connected to a variable pull-down impedance circuit. The impedance to the variable pull-down impedance circuit is varied in response to the second variable count. The first and second variable counts for configuring the output drivers are output when a steady state is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2006Date of Patent: April 7, 2009Assignee: Micron Technology, Inc.Inventors: Kang Yong Kim, Jeffrey P. Publication number: 20090066379Abstract: A methodology is disclosed that enables the delay stages of an analog delay locked loop (DLL) or phase locked loop (PLL) to be programmed according to the operating condition, which may depend on the frequency of the input reference clock. The resulting optimized delay stages allow for a broad frequency range of operation, fast locking time over a wide range of input clock frequencies, and a lower current consumption at high clock frequencies. Better performance is achieved by allowing the number of analog delay stages active during a given operation to be flexibly set. The deactivation or turning off of unused delay stages conserves power at higher frequencies. The high frequency range of operation is increased by using a flexible number of delay stages for various input clock frequencies. Because of the rules governing abstracts, this abstract should not be used to construe the claims.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2008Publication date: March 12, 2009Inventors: Kang Yong Kim, Dong Myung Choi

Publication number: 20080320325Abstract: A system and method are disclosed to generate and terminate clock shift modes during initialization of a synchronous circuit (e.g., a delay-locked loop or DLL). Upon initialization, the DLL is entered into a ForceSL (Force Shift Left) mode and an On1x mode (i.e., left shifting on each clock cycle). The feedback clock that tracks the phase of the reference clock (which, in turn, is derived from the system clock) is initially delayed in a coarse phase detector prior to applying it to the coarse phase detection window. Two delayed versions of the feedback clock are sampled by the reference clock to generate a pair of phase information signals, which are then used to establish an advanced phase equal (APHEQ) signal. The APHEQ signal advances onset of the PHEQ (phase equalization) phase and is used to terminate the ForceSL and On1x modes, thereby preventing wrong ForceSL exit due to clock jitter or feedback path overshooting during On1x exit.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2008Publication date: December 25, 2008Inventor: Kang Yong Kim
