Abstract: An external fixation system and method for realigning, compressing or distracting broken bones has a planar ring element with an adjustable device having a body releasably mounted on the ring element. The adjustable device includes a first member for movement in a direction generally perpendicular to the ring element. A second member is mounted on the first member for movement in a direction parallel to the first member and with respect to a circumference of the planar ring element. The method includes inserting a k-wire through a first piece of bone and affixing the k-wire to the ring element. Then inserting a second k-wire through a second piece of bone and affixing the k-wire to the adjustable device second member. • Publication number: 20160224780
Abstract: A facility for managing the state of an electronic device is described. A facility determines a maximum-inactivity-to-lock period length and a grace period length. The facility subtracts the grace period length from the maximum-inactivity-to-lock period length to obtain an inactivity-to-disable-display period length. During a time when the device is unlocked and a visual display of the device is enabled, the facility receives one or more first user input events. At a time that is the inactivity-to-disable-display period length after the latest first user input event is received, the facility disables the visual display to begin a grace period. At a time that is less than the grace period length later than the beginning of the grace period, the facility receives a second user input event. In response, the facility enables the visual display in order to provide authenticated access to the device without imposing any further authentication process.

  • Publication number: 20160217464
Abstract: When a user is requested to provide the user's social security number (SSN) or other personal information for conducting a credit/background check, the user may use a mobile app on the user's mobile device to display a unique identifier which is used in place of the SSN for processing the user's credit/risk analysis. The unique identifier is used as a protection layer on top of a user's SSN to reduce chances of identity fraud. In particular, an unique identifier (token) may be generated and issued to current payment account holders or new payment account holders when they sign up for payment accounts. When a merchant requires a customer's social security number for performing a credit or background check on the customer, the customer may simply provide the unique identifier and may be cleared to start using the merchant service without exposing the customer's SSN.

  • Publication number: 20160211174
Abstract: A method of forming a dual damascene metal interconnect for a semiconductor device. The method includes forming a layer of low-k dielectric, forming vias through the low-k dielectric layer, depositing a sacrificial layer, forming trenches through the sacrificial layer, filling the vias and trenches with metal, removing the sacrificial layer, then depositing an extremely low-k dielectric layer to fill between the trenches. The method allows the formation of an extremely low-k dielectric layer for the second level of the dual damascene structure while avoiding damage to that layer by such processes as trench etching and trench metal deposition. The method has the additional advantage of avoiding an etch stop layer between the via level dielectric and the trench level dielectric.

  • Publication number: 20160208781
Abstract: To efficiently nm a wind turbine in varying wind speeds, the wind turbine may be configured to switch between two different electrical configurations that offer different efficiencies depending on wind speed. For example, a star configuration may be preferred during low wind speeds while a delta configuration is preferred for high wind speeds. Before switching, the power output by the turbine's generator may be driven to zero. Doing so, however, removes load from the rotor blades which cause the rotor speed to increase. Instead, the rotor speed may be controlled such that the speed stays at or above the speed of the rotor immediately before the generator power is ramped down. Maintaining rotor speed at or slightly above the current speed while switching between electrical configurations may mitigate the torque change experienced by the turbine and reduce the likelihood of structural failure.

  • Patent number: 9395345
Abstract: A sensing system and method for detecting particles in an air volume includes a main airflow path including an inlet from the air volume. Also included is a collection site within the main airflow path. The collection site is for drawing an air sample from the main airflow path. Additionally the system includes a means to induce a localized increase in particle speed at the collection site relative to air speed along the remainder of the main airflow path. The means to induce a localized increase includes an auxiliary airflow path from the main airflow path. The auxiliary airflow path has an exit upstream of the collection site. In an alternative form of the invention, the means to induce the localized increase in particle speed at the collection site comprises a venturi in the main airflow path with the collection site being disposed along the venturi.
