  • Publication number: 20050099975
Abstract: The present invention includes a method of optimizing a transmission mode of wirelessly transmitted data. The method includes selecting a first transmission mode based on a predetermined channel database and a first channel characterization. The first channel characterization can be based upon signals transmitted in an initial mode. An error factor is generated based on a difference between an estimated performance characteristic, and an expected performance characteristic. A subsequent transmission mode is selected based upon the predetermined channel database, the error factor and a subsequent channel characterization. The predetermined channel database can include a predetermined look-up-table that provides transmission mode selections based upon the channel characterizations. The look-up-table generally includes a plurality of quality parameter thresholds that determine the selection of a transmission mode.

  • Publication number: 20050102313
Abstract: Computer-implemented methods and apparatus are provided for recording an indication of a source location at which a data element is stored. One method includes executing a set of programmed instructions to identify the source location comprising a portion of a data structure containing source information, wherein the portion contains the data element; and storing an indication of the source location in electronic file storage. The method may be semi-autimated, such that the programmed instructions preliminarily identify the data element, and a user is prompted to confirm that the identification is accurate. Using the indication of the source location, the data element may be retrieved and/or replicated from the source location to any of multiple output destinations.

  • Patent number: 6892212
Abstract: A computing apparatus and method classify data objects into at least a first type and alternatively a second type, and allocate a first portion of computer memory to objects of the first type and a second portion of computer memory to objects of the second type. Then the method performs garbage collection of data objects within at least one portion of computer memory while retaining surviving objects within the computer memory. Objects of the first type occur in a computer memory with a frequency that exceeds a selected threshold, and are designated “prolific.” Objects of the second type occur in the computer memory with a frequency that does not exceed the selected threshold, and are designated “non-prolific”.

  • Publication number: 20050094456
Abstract: A method for making magnetic random access memories (MRAM) which reduces heat conduction from memory cells in an MRAM array. The method uses grid of bit and word lines for selectively accessing data in the array of magnetic memory cells. The grid has a plurality of thermally and electrically resistive portions which provide connections to the magnetic memory cells. The resistive portions increase the thermal resistance for heat generated by each memory cell and during operation provide localized heating of active memory cells to ease cell state switching.

  • Patent number: 6888837
Abstract: A technique for translating addresses in a communication network having multiple overlapping address domains involves mapping an overlapping local address from a first address domain to a unique global address that is specific to a second address domain. The unique global address is used by any device in the second address domain to reference the device in the first address domain having the overlapping local address. Furthermore, a packet sent from a source host in the first address domain to a destination host in the second address domain requires at least a source address translation in order to translate the source host local address used within the first address domain into a source host global address that is used within the second address domain, and may also require a destination address translation in order to translate the destination host global address used within the first address domain into a destination host local address used within the second address domain.

  • Patent number: 6886085
Abstract: A method and an apparatus that improves virtual memory management. The proposed method and apparatus provides an application with an efficient channel for communicating information about future behavior of an application with respect to the use of memory and other resources to the OS, a paging daemon, and other system software. The state of hint bits, which are integrated into page table entries and TLB entries and are used for communicating information to the OS, can be changed explicitly with a special instruction or implicitly as a result of referencing the associated page. The latter is useful for canceling hints. The method and apparatus enables memory allocators, garbage collectors, and compilers (such as those used by the Java platform) to use a page-aligned heap and a page-aligned stack to assist the OS in effective management of memory resources. This mechanism can also be used in other system software.
