  • Publication number: 20180144000
Abstract: Described are systems and methods for storing a variable number of instances of data objects (e.g., 1, 2, 3, or up to N?1 instances, where N is the number of instances of the data object included in primary data) in secondary storage across a data storage network. In some examples, a system for storing a variable number of instances of data objects includes, one or more computing devices storing a set of data objects and multiple storage devices distinct from the one or more computing devices. Each of the multiple storage devices is configured to store at least a single instance of a data object. The system also includes a database configured to store information associated with the data objects. This information includes substantially unique identifiers for the data objects and, for each of the data objects, a number of instances of the data object stored on the multiple storage devices.

  • Publication number: 20180132120
Abstract: Techniques for monitoring presence of a remote device at Layer 2 that allow reducing power consumption without compromising the device's availability. A device that pairs with a remote wireless device may establish a Layer 3 connection, such as an IP connection, to the remote device to provide services to a user. The Layer 3 connection may be formed over a Layer 2 connection via an access point or as a peer-to-peer wireless connection between the devices. When the Layer 3 connection is not actively used to access the remote device, the Layer 3 connection and the supporting Layer 2 connection (e.g., WI-FI, WI-FI DIRECT™ or BLUETOOTH®) may be terminated and presence of the remote device may be monitored using a Layer 2 device discovery mechanism. The Layer 2 and Layer 3 connections to the device may be reestablished when use of the remote device is desired.

  • Publication number: 20180121111
Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein address the need to more efficiently backup a network-based storage environment that may be remote from a primary storage environment. For example, embodiments herein can provide a more efficient backup of a storage managed by a third-party entity. To improve the backup process, embodiments herein may optimize the number of scanning threads that are used to identify files that are to be backed up by, for example, analyzing the characteristics of the network and/or the network storage system to determine a number of scanning threads that will enable faster scanning of the network storage system while at the same time not overburden or be slowed down by a network between the network-based storage environment and the primary storage environment.

  • Publication number: 20180121115
Abstract: A scalable approach is disclosed for processing auxiliary-copy jobs in a storage management system by using distributed media agent resources instead of a centralized storage manager. Enhanced media agents coordinate and control auxiliary-copy jobs and tap the storage manager to reserve data streams and provide job-specific metadata on demand. An enhanced storage manager may initially select a media agent as “coordinator” to coordinate auxiliary-copy jobs with any number of other media agents, which act as “controllers.” A coordinator media agent is generally responsible for obtaining data stream reservation information from the storage manager and assigning auxiliary-copy jobs to respective controller media agents, based on the components involved in the respective reserved data streams.

  • Patent number: 9961068
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer-readable media support provisioning a computer application that is executed on an associated computing component through a primary computing component. Even though different passwords may be associated with a user for the primary and the associated computing components, one aspect is seamless single sign-on to a computer cluster that provides the external computer application so that any user or group membership changes at the primary computing component is transparent to the associated computing component. Users may be restricted service for the application at the edge nodes of the cluster and are then able to access data in directories corresponding to the user's group as configured at the primary computing component. A batch process may be initiated to issue a security token to one more users, thus enabling the user to obtain a service ticket and consequently service for the application.

  • Patent number: 9959275
Abstract: The disclosed techniques that can use deduplication information on a source computer platform to improve the process of performing data backups or restoration from/to the computer platform. In one example aspect, a data backup operation can re-use some of the work already done by a source computer's deduplication system. For example, a storage operation could read a deduplication database on the source computer platform to determine the duplicativeness of a given data chunk being transferred to a backup storage system, without having to perform computations such as data chunk hashing and comparison with previously generated hashes. The technique may additionally or alternatively reuse hashes generated by the source computer during deduplication of the data file on the source computer's file system during deduplication at the external backup storage system.

  • Publication number: 20180113768
Abstract: The data storage system according to certain aspects can implement partial file restore, where only a portion of the secondary copy of a file is restored. Such portion may be designated by one or more application offsets for the file. The system may provide an in-chunk index that includes mapping information between the application offsets and the secondary copy offsets. Chunks may refer to logical data units in which secondary copies are stored, and the in-chunk index for a chunk may be stored in secondary storage with the chunk. Because the mapping information may not be provided at a fixed interval, the system can search through application offsets in the in-chunk index to locate the secondary copy offset corresponding to the portion application offset(s). In this manner, the system may restore the designated portion of the secondary copy in a fast and efficient manner by using the in-chunk index.

  • Patent number: 9953620
Abstract: Techniques are described for determining a region to be updated in a frame based on positional changes of one layer from frame-to-frame. The positional changes may be displacement of a layer or removal of a layer from one frame to the next. In addition to the information of the positional changes, the techniques also utilize all areas for which the image content changed, but the position did not, for determining the region to be updated.

  • Publication number: 20180104573
Abstract: A control device with a touch screen and motion sensors is held in one hand with the screen facing the user. Preferably, thumb motion of the hand holding the control device on the touch screen sensor of the control device is the input to control the motion and animations of an avatar, wherein the avatar motion is displayed on the control device touch screen or, in an embodiment, on an external display device. An important aspect of the present invention is tilting the control device, causing an angular rotation velocity, which can trigger a game event such as throwing, kicking, shooting or other action of the game.

  • Patent number: 9947118
Abstract: Techniques described herein are generally related to non-interferometric phase measurements of an optical signal. The various described techniques may be applied to methods, systems, devices or combinations thereof. Some methods for determining phase data of the optical signal may include transmitting the optical signal through a first optical element and obtaining first intensity data at a first focal plane of the first optical element by an optical sensor. Example methods may also include transmitting the optical signal through a second optical element. The second optical element may include a phase transformation mask. Example methods may further include obtaining a second intensity data at a second focal plane of the second optical element by the optical sensor and determining the phase data for the optical signal based on the first intensity data and the second intensity data.

  • Patent number: 9940059
Abstract: An information management system provides a data deduplication system that uses a primary table, a deduplication chunk table, and a chunk integrity table to ensure that a referenced deduplicated data block is only verified once during the data verification of a backup or other replication operation. The data deduplication system may reduce the computational and storage overhead associated with traditional data verification processes. The primary table, the deduplication chunk table, and the chunk integrity table, all of which are stored in a deduplication database, can also ensure synchronization between the deduplication database and secondary storage devices.
