  • Patent number: 6952505
Abstract: A composite for use in the aircraft construction industry includes an optical transmission device, such as an optical fiber, embedded within a carrier. The optical transmission device is provided with a high-quality optical interface surface which provides for optical connection to the optical transmission means from outside the carrier. The optical interface surface is provided as part of a micro-optical component which processes the optical signals to improve light extraction from a supply to the optical transmission means. The buried optical transmission device is accessed by a passageway formed in the carrier to the interface surface. If the passageway is formed prior to completion of finishing processes on the composite, a protective plug is provided to close the passageway until the optical connection is required.

  • Patent number: 6936420
Abstract: A method of amplification of one or more DNA sequences in a DNA containing sample, and methods of investigating such samples are provided in which an improved amplification cycling regime is used. The regime features a first phase and a second phase, the first phase including a denaturation temperature step, followed by an annealing temperature step, followed by a corrected annealed primer extension temperature step, these steps being followed by an annealing temperature step, corrected annealed primer extension temperature step prior to any further denaturation temperature steps being applied. Increased amplification from a given number of amplification cycles and maximised sensitivity for the DNA amplification process is achieved as a result.

  • Patent number: 6874919
Abstract: An emergency lighting system for an aircraft has photoluminescent material arranged to define an escape path to the exits. The photoluminescent material is encapsulated within a track of predetermined length for securing to the floor of the aircraft. The track comprises a one piece housing formed with a longitudinally extending slot and the photoluminescent material is provided by an insert that is a push-fit in the slot from one end of the housing. The housing is closed at both ends to seal the slot and prevent ingress of dirt or fluid. In a modification the housing is compressed with the insert in place to reduce the height of the track and optionally to provide the track with anti-slip characteristics.

  • Patent number: 6835222
Abstract: Apparatus (10, 110, 210, 310) for separating particles from a fluid flow comprises an upstream cyclonic separator (12, 112, 212, 312) and a plurality of downstream cyclonic separators (26, 126, 226, 326) arranged in parallel with one another. Each of the downstream cyclonic separators (26, 126, 226, 326) projects, at least in part, into the interior of the upstream cyclonic separator (12, 112, 212, 312). This arrangement provides a compact and economic apparatus which is particularly suitable for applications such as vacuum cleaners.

  • Publication number: 20040258411
Abstract: The architecture for a photonic transport network node provides for pass-through of selected channels in the absence of OEO conversion, dropping of selected other channels, and selective routing of the other dropped channels to a processing means that provides OEO conversion and 3R processing. Conveniently, these dropped channels may be multiplexed back into the switching fabric of the node to be directed in pass-through mode to any selected output destination port. The add channels are inserted at the input side of the node. In addition, a pass-through channels may selectively delayed and OEO converted if signal conditioning and/or wavelength conversion are required. The transponders, regenerators and transceivers need not be wavelength specific, allowing flexible and scaleable network configurations. This network node is upgradeable and can be augmented without disturbing traffic within the node.
