  • Publication number: 20060195078
Abstract: An interface for coupling an eye to a surgical laser is disclosed. A lens cone includes a base ring opposite an apex ring. The base ring defines a first plane and is adapted to couple to the delivery tip of the laser such that the first plane has a predetermined position relative to the delivery tip. An applanation lens is affixed to the apex ring and has a surface disposed in a second plane such that the second plane is parallel to and has a predetermined position relative to the first plane. A gripper is engagable with the lens cone. An attachment ring is affixed to the gripper and is adapted to couple to the anterior surface of the eye. When the lens cone and gripper are engaged, the applanation lens contacts the anterior surface of the eye, placing the anterior surface in spatial registration with the delivery tip.

  • Patent number: 7097923
Abstract: A tri-layer anti-reflective coating for use in photolithographic applications, and specifically, for use in ultraviolet photolithographic processes. The tri-layered anti-reflective coating is used to minimize pattern distortion due to reflections from neighboring features in the construction of microcircuits. The tri-layer anti-reflection coating features a first layer, a first dielectric layer, an absorption layer disposed on the first dielectric layer, and a second dielectric layer, which is then disposed between the absorption layer and a photoresist layer. At least the absorption layer and dielectric layers can be formed using vacuum deposition. A unique character of the tri-layer anti-reflective coatings is that it dampens reflections structures having severe topologies and also allows a thinner anti-reflection layer that has a wider process latitude.

  • Patent number: 6948231
Abstract: The present invention presents a method for fabricating coil elements for magnetic write heads. A coil pattern is formed on a substrate using photolithographic techniques. The substrate is etched using reactive ion etching, creating a coil-shaped trench in the substrate. Thin film seed layers are deposited using ion beam deposition. The substrate is electroplated with metal filling the trenches with metal. The substrate is chemical mechanical polished to remove excess metal and planarize the air bearing surface of the write head.

  • Patent number: 6863667
Abstract: A disposable stabilization and applanation device for reconfiguring the cornea of an eye for ophthalmic laser surgery, includes an applanation lens that is disposed in a particular spatial position with respect to an incident laser beam. The applanation lens is inserted into the central opening of an attachment ring and applanates the eye in response to pressure from a lens cone. The attachment ring is coupled to the eye and includes a skirt which surrounds the applanation lens and extends outwardly therefrom to define a chamber. The skirt is formed with a groove which defines a suction channel between the attachment ring skirt and the corneal surface of an eye. A vacuum source is connected and fluid communication with the suction channel and is selectively activated to create a partial vacuum in the channel.

  • Patent number: 6859998
Abstract: An article is formed as a substrate having a projection extending outwardly therefrom. The article may be a magnetic recording head and the projection a write pole. The projection has a width in a thinnest dimension measured parallel to a substrate surface of no more than about 0.3 micrometers and a height measured perpendicular to the substrate of not less than about 5 times the width. The article is fabricated by forming an overlying structure on the substrate with an edge thereon, depositing a replication layer lying on the edge, depositing a filler onto the edge and the substrate, so that the filler, the replication layer, and the overlying structure in combination comprise a continuous layer on the substrate, selectively removing at least a portion of the replication layer from a free surface of the continuous layer inwardly toward the substrate, to form a defined cavity, and depositing a projection material into the defined cavity to form the projection.

  • Publication number: 20040202647
Abstract: Herein, it is demonstrated that the posttranslational modification of the amino acid tyrosine to nitrotyrosine has profound consequences for immune recognition. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that self-proteins containing nitrotyrosine can be recognized by the immune systems as foreign and as such these same proteins can be converted to potential autoantigens. As such, this invention relates to compositions and methods for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions including autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cancer through the recognition of compounds containing nitrated tyrosine residues.

  • Publication number: 20040135525
Abstract: A method and apparatus used to step and correct the position of raster lines in a sinusoidal or zig-zag deflection system. By combining the magnetic flux generated with a rotation “twister” coil and a vertical deflection coil, scan lines can be uniformly spaced and separated nearly to their ends. Accordingly, the magnetic flux generated with the twister coil is adjusted going in the left to right direction then reversed in polarity and readjusted while returning from right to left. It is this controlled twister flux that combines with the linear vertical deflection flux to straighten and then step each scan line to produce an aligned raster.

  • Patent number: 6753459
Abstract: Genetic constructs, transformation vectors and methods are taught for production of transgenic plants which can be selectively removed from a growing site by application of a chemical agent or physiological stress. The invention links a target gene for the trait of commercial interest to a conditionally lethal gene, which can be selectively expressed to cause plant death. By use of the genetic constructs, transformation vectors and methods of the present invention, invasion of environments and contamination of commercial non-engineered productions by transgenic plants can be avoided. Methods are also taught for transformation of Brassica species.

  • Publication number: 20040100421
Abstract: A system for enhancing brightness and resolution while correcting certain types of convergence, geometry, color and luminance errors caused by the display device, the viewing position or both. This system involves merging images from two or more sources, overlapping and offsetting pixels, or overlapping scanning lines “merged raster” in a CRT or several (3) “merged rasters” in color CRT's, and adjusting video content and timing, to compensate for the current viewing position and/or device distortion. Display and/or viewing perspective distortion characteristics are measured from the observers viewing position for the raster or each non-converged raster and stored as correction factor data in non-volatile memory. This data is used to modify the digital addressing of video image memory, to read and to correct pixel data for each image, adjust color, modify magnitude, and to drive the displays video amplifier at the correct time with the corrected amplitude and image data.
