  • Publication number: 20040069651
Abstract: Method and apparatus for electrodepositing a metal onto a substrate. An oxide treatment process is performed on a substrate prior to making electrical contact between a seed layer of the substrate and a conductive contact element which provides a current. In one embodiment, the pressure at the interface between the seed layer and the conductive contact element is controlled to avoid detrimentally affecting a material(s) of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6686707
Abstract: A method and apparatus used to step and correct the position of raster lines in a sinusoidal or zig-zag deflection system. By combining the magnetic flux generated with a rotation “twister” coil and a vertical deflection coil, scan lines can be uniformly spaced and separated nearly to their ends. Accordingly, the magnetic flux generated with the twister coil is adjusted going in the left to right direction then reversed in polarity and readjusted while returning from right to left. It is this controlled twister flux that combines with the linear vertical deflection flux to straighten and then step each scan line to produce an aligned raster.

  • Publication number: 20030218835
Abstract: The present invention presents a method for fabricating coil elements for magnetic write heads. A coil pattern is formed on a substrate using photolithographic techniques. The substrate is etched using reactive ion etching, creating a coil-shaped trench in the substrate. Thin film seed layers are deposited using ion beam deposition. The substrate is electroplated with metal filling the trenches with metal. The substrate is chemical mechanical polished to remove excess metal and planarize the air bearing surface of the write head.

  • Publication number: 20030203237
Abstract: A tri-layer anti-reflective coating for use in photolithographic applications, and specifically, for use in ultraviolet photolithographic processes. The tri-layered anti-reflective coating is used to minimize pattern distortion due to reflections from neighboring features in the construction of microcircuits. The tri-layer anti-reflection coating features a first layer, a first dielectric layer, an absorption layer disposed on the first dielectric layer, and a second dielectric layer, which is then disposed between the absorption layer and a photoresist layer. At least the absorption layer and dielectric layers can be formed using vacuum deposition. A unique character of the tri-layer anti-reflective coatings is that it dampens reflections structures having severe topologies and also allows a thinner anti-reflection layer that has a wider process latitude.

  • Publication number: 20030193740
Abstract: An article is formed as a substrate having a projection extending outwardly therefrom. The article may be a magnetic recording head and the projection a write pole. The projection has a width in a thinnest dimension measured parallel to a substrate surface of no more than about 0.3 micrometers and a height measured perpendicular to the substrate of not less than about 5 times the width. The article is fabricated by forming an overlying structure on the substrate with an edge thereon, depositing a replication layer lying on the edge, depositing a filler onto the edge and the substrate, so that the filler, the replication layer, and the overlying structure in combination comprise a continuous layer on the substrate, selectively removing at least a portion of the replication layer from a free surface of the continuous layer inwardly toward the substrate, to form a defined cavity, and depositing a projection material into the defined cavity to form the projection.

  • Publication number: 20030188329
Abstract: Genetic constructs, transformation vectors and methods are taught for production of transgenic plants which can be selectively removed from a growing site by application of a chemical agent or physiological stress. The invention links a target gene for the trait of commercial interest to a conditionally lethal gene, which can be selectively expressed to cause plant death. By use of the genetic constructs, transformation vectors and methods of the present invention, invasion of environments and contamination of commercial non-engineered productions by transgenic plants can be avoided. Methods are also taught for transformation of Brassica species.

  • Publication number: 20030129850
Abstract: A method of planarizing a metal conductive layer on a substrate is provided. In one embodiment, a substrate having a metal conductive layer disposed on a top surface of the substrate is provided on a substrate support. The substrate support is rotated and the top surface of the substrate is contacted with a liquid etching composition. Also provided is an apparatus for etching a metal conductive layer on a substrate. The apparatus comprises a container, a substrate support disposed in the container, a rotation actuator attached to the substrate support, and a fluid delivery assembly disposed in the container.

  • Patent number: 6582498
Abstract: In a method of separating carbon dioxide from a gas mixture, a liquid solvent flows down an array of vertical wires with the gas mixture flowing over the liquid. Once on the wire, the liquid quickly breaks up into drops of varying sizes, with each size moving down the wire at a different velocity. Large, faster moving drops overtake the small, slower moving drops to form even larger drops. As the drops fall, new drops are created behind the falling drops. Consequently, drops of a large range of sizes are forming, colliding, and mixing as they travel down the wire. During this process, gas molecules that have adsorbed onto the liquid surface are mixed into the interior of the solvent, resulting in highly effective mass transfer and gas absorption. This enhanced mass transfer allows greater flexibility in the choice of solvent and in the system design.
