  • Publication number: 20190321665
Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to a distance-learning safety retraction device (DLSRD) mechanically coupled to a fixed anchor point on a boundary-mapped surface, the DLSRD including two receivers in operable communication with a transmitter bome on a user. In an illustrative example, the DLSRD may determine an angle between a lanyard coupled to the user and a vertical plane between the two receivers. The DLSRD may include, for example, an extraction detector detecting an extracted length of the lanyard. The DLSRD may determine user proximity to a safe operating area boundary based upon a difference of a current extracted length of the lanyard to a learned extracted length associated with a current angle of the lanyard, for example. Various DLSRDs may be configured in a run-mode to apply a braking effect to the lanyard and/or to activate a warning device based upon the user's proximity to the boundary.

  • Patent number: 10309835
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide with an internally reflective tube. The light guide is coupled to an earpiece, and has a lens or an aperture positioned at one of its ends. A sensor is positioned at the other end of the light guide, and a processor is coupled to the sensor. The sensor senses infrared radiation from an infrared source at the end of the light guide, and the processor determines a temperature of the infrared source at the end of the light guide via a transfer function that correlates a measure of the infrared radiation observed by the sensor and an effect of radiation of the light guide.

  • Patent number: 10292822
Abstract: A device for containing bone graft material includes a mesh outer sleeve extending longitudinally from a proximal end to a distal end and sized and shaped to correspond to a profile of an outer surface of a target bone. The outer sleeve includes a longitudinal slot extending along a length thereof. The device also includes a mesh inner sleeve connected to an interior surface of the outer sleeve via at least one strut so that a bone graft collecting space is defined therebetween. The inner sleeve is sized and shaped to correspond to a profile of a medullary canal of the target bone. In addition, the device includes an interstitial mesh extending radially away from an exterior surface of the inner sleeve toward an interior surface of the outer sleeve to hold graft material in the bone graft collecting space.

  • Patent number: 10258472
Abstract: A device for containing a graft material includes an outer member formed via an outer mesh sheet biased toward a coiled configuration in which the outer mesh sheet is coiled about a longitudinal axis thereof so that, when the outer member is positioned about separated portions of a target bone in an operative position, the outer member reverts to the coiled configuration and contracts about and engages the separated portions. The device also includes an inner member formed via an inner mesh sheet coiled about a longitudinal axis thereof. The inner member is movable between a first biased coiled configuration and a second coiled configuration. A diameter of the inner member in the first coiled configuration is larger than a diameter of the inner member in the second coiled configuration.

  • Publication number: 20190083178
Abstract: A C-arm, or a mobile intensifier device, is one example of a medical imaging device that is based on X-ray technology. Because a C-arm device can display high-resolution X-ray images in real time, a physician can monitor progress at any time during an operation, and thus can take appropriate actions based on the displayed images. Monitoring the images, however, is often challenging during certain procedures, for instance during procedures in which attention must be paid to the patient's anatomy as well as a medical imaging device display. In an example, a surgical instrument assembly includes a processor, a surgical instrument configured to operate on an anatomical structure, and a display coupled to the processor and attached to the surgical instrument. The display can be configured to display visual information comprising X-ray images generated by a medical imaging device.

  • Publication number: 20190049315
Abstract: Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for determining the temperature of an object or surface near a user, such as a firefighter, in potentially dangerous conditions. A temperature sensor configured to be attached to a personal protection equipment may comprise a standoff temperature sensor element configured to detect the temperature of a nearby object or surface; a microcontroller configured to receive sensor data from the standoff temperature sensor element and determine the sensed temperature; an indicator configured to be activated by the microcontroller when the sensed temperature is higher than a predefined threshold; and an attachment element configured to attach the sensor to a personal protection equipment worn by a user.

  • Patent number: 10088367
Abstract: A device for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide. The light guide is coupled to an earpiece. A first sensor is positioned at a first end of the light guide, and a second sensor is positioned at a second end of the light guide. A processor is coupled to the first sensor and the second sensor. The first sensor senses infrared radiation from an infrared source at the second end of the light guide, and the second sensor measures a temperature of the light guide at the second end of the light guide. The processor determines a temperature of the infrared source at the second end of the light guide by compensating for infrared radiation due to a thermal gradient of the light guide via a regression analysis across a range of ambient temperatures of the light guide.

  • Patent number: 10078021
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring body core temperature includes a light guide. The light guide can be coupled to an earpiece, or it can be a standalone device. The apparatus also includes a sensor positioned at one end of the light guide, and a processor coupled to the sensor. The sensor is operable to sense infrared radiation from an infrared source at the opposite end of the light guide. The processor is operable to determine a temperature of the infrared source at the opposite end of the light guide via a transfer function that correlates a measurement of the infrared radiation observed by the sensor and an effect of radiation of the light guide.
