  • Patent number: 6428688
Abstract: The oil filter 23 is situated downstream of the oil control valve 4 while extending in the axial direction of the advance-angle side oil path. Therefore, any foreign matter existing between the control valve 4 and the actuator 3 is removed by the filter 23 to prevent foreign matter from becoming lodged in the oil control valve 4. This stabilizes the operation of the variable valve timing mechanism.

  • Patent number: 6237678
Abstract: A flattened heat-transfer tube is formed by superimposing on each other a pair of plane portions provided at both ends of a plate of aluminum alloy are superimposed on each other to thereby form a joint. The joints are positioned on the downwind side, and folded portions having a U-shaped cross section are positioned on the windward side. Accordingly, there is a tendency to spread kinetic energy of foreign substances resulting from collision with the folded portions over their entirety, thereby preventing the application of high degree of stress to part of the flattened heat-transfer tubes, as well as contributing to improvements in the durability of the flattened heat-transfer tubes.

  • Patent number: 5913742
Abstract: A tensioner for an endless transmitting member is provided to reliably prevent the loosening of an endless chain, while preventing the occurrence of an incorrect meshing of the endless chain with sprockets. A plunger holder is biased in an advancing direction by the action of a first spring supported in a housing, and a plunger, carried in the plunger holder, is biased in an advancing direction by the action of a second spring having a spring constant larger than that of the first spring. Only the movement of the plunger holder in the advancing direction is permitted by a ratchet mechanism mounted between the plunger holder and the housing. During operation of the engine, the advancing movement of the plunger holder is inhibited by the hydraulic pressure transmitted to a hydraulic pressure chamber, and the plunger is advanced and retracted in accordance with a variation in tension of the endless chain.

  • Patent number: 5791309
Abstract: A secondary balancer device provided below a cylinder block of an engine including a front balancer shaft and a rear balancer shaft which are rotated in opposite directions and have longitudinally central main journal portions carried in a balancer holder, respectively. Bracing journal portions are provided on axial ends of one of the front and rear balancer shafts and supported in a pump body and a pump cover of an oil pump provided below the cylinder block, respectively. A pump shaft of the oil pump and the front balancer shaft are connected to a crankshaft by a common endless chain and rotated at different numbers of revolutions. Thus, the number of parts for supporting the balancer shafts can be reduced, while maintaining the freedom of setting the number of revolutions of the oil pump of the engine.

  • Patent number: 5460858
Abstract: A method for forming a wrinkle-free insulating layer from a resin having both photo-curing and thermosetting properties by reducing the magnitude of a concentration gradient of residual solvent in the thickness direction of the resin layer after drying the resin layer and prior to photo-curing, developing and thermosetting the resin layer. In one embodiment, such reduction is achieved by passing a substrate bearing the resin layer by a roll coater charged with a solvent for the resin, and allowing solvent to be absorbed by the resin layer. The solvent application roll can be spaced from the resin layer by a small gap such that solvent vapor is applied to the resin layer. Alternatively, solvent in liquid form can be applied to the resin layer. In another embodiment, the concentration gradient of residual solvent in the resin layer is reduced by affixing a barrier film to the resin layer and then heating the resin layer.
