  • Publication number: 20010016736
Abstract: Presbyopia is treated by a method which uses various lasers to remove a portion of the scleral tissue and increase the accommodation of the presbyopic patient's eye. Stable accommodation is achieved by the filling of the sub-conjunctival tissue to the laser-ablated scleral areas. The proposed laser wavelength ranges from ultraviolet to infrared of (0.15-0.36) microns, (0.5-1.4) microns and (0.9-10.6) microns. Both scanning and fiber delivered systems are proposed.

  • Patent number: 6257874
Abstract: A flame adjusting device for a gas burning device includes a flame adjusting wheel securely mounted to a disk of a valve on a gas tank and a neck extends from a side of the flame adjusting wheel and a ring is mounted to the neck. A protrusion extends from the ring and is accessible for the users. When shifting the protrusion, the ring and the flame adjusting wheel rotate to adjust the gas released via the valve. When a user wants to change the volume of gas released via the valve, he/she holds the protrusion and rotates the flame adjusting wheel so that the disk of the valve is rotated while the ring is remained still.

  • Patent number: 6147910
Abstract: A page mode flash memory or floating gate memory device, including a page buffer based upon low current bit latches, and additional capabilities for parallel read and parallel program verify operations. The present device includes bit latch circuitry and/or method steps that facilitate such parallel operations and avoid data conflicts. Circuitry for separate read signals can serve to isolate the operations. Additionally, circuitry tied to the data verification signal can also be used. A diode type device can be used to isolate signal conditions that might indicate the cell does not need to be programmed. Bit-by-bit precharging of the bit lines can also be employed in order to save precharging power. Additionally, the large capacitance of the dataline might be used to delay discharging a particular dataline, and thereby allow a latch enabling signal to go high, thus eliminating the need for further isolation circuitry, or the like.

  • Patent number: 6114782
Abstract: Disclosed is a stator of 2-phase step motor that has 4 stator coils, two in each phase. The coils are wound around 8 stator poles in a standard bifilar winding pattern. The first center-tap of the first phase and the second center tap of the second phase are connected. One end of the first phase makes a first terminal. One end of the second phase makes a second terminal. The other end of the first phase and the other end of the second phase are connected to make a third terminal. A three-phase driver can drive the step motor via these three terminals. Performance of the stator of the step motor can be improved by increasing the number of turns of the two coils whose ends make the first and second terminals. Then the three phase resistances of the stator can be adjusted to have similar resistances by reducing the wire gauge of the other two coils. This reduction of the wire size compensates for the space needed for the increase in the numbers of coil turns mentioned above.

  • Patent number: 6056578
Abstract: A universal serial bus connector including a male and a female connector. The male connector has elastic hooking means fixed to two sides of its casing. The hooking means each has a front hook and an outward projected elastic rear push portion. The female connector has outward extended retaining tabs provided at two edges of its each insertion hole corresponding to the hooks of the hooking means on the male connector. When the male connector is inserted into the female connector with the rear push portions of the hooking means inward pressed, the hooks may be located beyond the retaining tabs on the female connector. When the push portions of the hooking means are released, the hooks of the hooking means elastically shift inward to engage with said retaining tabs and cause the male connector to be firmly connected to the female connector without easily disengaging from the latter.

  • Patent number: 5993475
Abstract: A biodegradable device for repairing torn meniscal cartilage comprising a shaft and tissue gripping means at both ends. One end is adapted to pierce the tissue and the opposite end is adapted to fit a driver. The central portion of the device is essentially smooth along its length. The device has been subjected to a drawing operation after fabrication leaving the molecules in the shaft in a higher state of residual stress. When the device is exposed to an aqueous environment, the water absorbed by the polymer lowers the glass transition temperature of the polymer. Lowering glass transition temperature allows increased molecular mobility causing the device to contract. The contraction pulls the torn tissues into close apposition during healing. As the tissue heals, the tension is released by the polymer resorbing.

  • Patent number: 5977684
Abstract: A rotating machine configurable as a pure DC generator for use in various applications, including recharging batteries in battery operated portable devices. The generator consists of a pair of permanent magnets which are mounted on two rotating magnetic ferrous metal hubs. The magnets are aligned so that they have the same polarity facing each other. The hubs, including the magnets, rotate around a stationary toroidal coil, which creates a magnetic flux. The flux from the two magnets cuts the conductor to the toroidal coil in a same direction upon rotation of the hubs, creating an emf (current) which is always in the same direction. Thus, a direct current is created, without the need for commutation or rectification. The input and output functions of the generator may be reversed to enable the generator to function as a DC motor.

  • Patent number: 5930793
Abstract: The performance of a heterogeneous, distributed database system is optimized by supporting both block fetch operations and positioned update operations. Specifically, a data block is fetched from a target database management system (DBMS), and a positioned update instruction issued by a client is processed. The positioned update instruction, when executed by the target DBMS, enables the target DBMS to modify a row contained in the data block and addressed by a cursor as the cursor is perceived by the client. Also, performance of the database system is optimized by identifying database statements that reference invariant host variables, and modifying such database statements by replacing in the database statements the host variables with literal values equivalent to the host variables.
