Abstract: N-(2-aminocycloheptyl)N-alkanoylanilides and their 2-N-oxides of the formula ##STR1## e.g., trans-3,4-dichloro-N-[2-(allylamino)cycloheptyl]propionanilide, and their pharmacologically acceptable salts, have been found to possess potent Central Nervous System antidepressant properties. Many of them are new. These compounds are promising antidepressant drugs which are characterized by lower toxicity than imipramine, and long acting activity which may allow longer durations between administrations, e.g., once a day. Pharmaceutical compositions containing these compounds and a process for treating conditions of depression with these compositions are disclosed.
Abstract: An improved electrical heating element for a high-temperature furnace including a support structure and an electrical-heating assembly. The support structure includes a plurality of thin, flat, non-conductive plates each having a plurality of spaced apertures therethrough and a plurality of non-conductive spacers smaller than the plates with one spacer interposed between each pair of adjacent plates. The electrical-heating assembly includes a plurality of elongated electrical conductors, preferably U-shaped, each leg extending through one aperture in each plate radially outwardly of the spacers. The conductors are supported by and extend between the plates and the ends of the conductors are interconnected so that the conductors as interconnected define a single tortuous electrical path radially outwardly of the spacers. The .[.interconnection.]. .Iadd.interconnections .Iaddend.between the conductors maintain the support structure in assembly.
Abstract: A monostable multivibrator including a gate circuit, a time constant circuit, and an inverter circuit. An input signal to the gate circuit causes the time constant circuit which preferably includes a resistor and a capacitor to charge or discharge. A signal derived from the time constant circuit is applied to an input bias circuit including an emitter follower type transistor circuit associated with a differential amplifier within the inverter circuit to control the duration of the monostable output pulse.
Abstract: The Jac Pac is a jacket or a backpack, two separate articles of clothing formed from one which cannot be used as both at the same time. The Jac Pac may be used as a jacket for warmth or may be removed and formed into a backpack for carrying objects.
Abstract: A helmet for the protection of sportsmen and/or workers in potentially hazardous occupations is disclosed. In one embodiment the helmet comprises a protective head shell and means to position the helmet on a users head in which the head shell has an outer section slidably connected to an inner section. The outer section is adapted to move relative to the inner section on impact with an object. In another embodiment the helmet further comprises a plurality of cushioning projections located between the two shells, each projection being integrally connected to one of the shells.
Abstract: A method for bonding a layer of porous polymeric material to a rigid implantable portion of a prosthetic device, which includes the steps of (a) forming a substrate by coating the implantable portion with material which is chemically compatible with the porous polymeric material and which has a melt viscosity and/or melting temperature lower than that of the porous polymeric material, (b) covering the substrate with a porous polymeric material in powder form capable of forming said porous polymeric layer for forming a composite coating on the implantable portion, and (c) heating the substrate and porous polymeric material to a temperature high enough to cause the substrate material to flow into the adjacent pores and low enough so that the porous material will maintain its shape so that the porous layer will be bonded to the substrate and the outer pores will be open to accommodate tissue ingrowth, and an apparatus formed by said method.
Abstract: A prosthetic wrist joint for anchoring into the radius and the metacarpals includes a radial component, a metacarpal component and an intermediate component. The radial component has a part-cylindrical bearing surface and a stem portion for insertion into the end of the radius bone. The metacarpal component has a ball-like hinge portion and a pair of outwardly protruding prongs for anchoring into the second metacarpal and the third metacarpal. The intermediate component includes a cylindrical bearing surface which cooperatively engages the part-cylindrical bearing surface of the radial component, and a socket-like recess for receiving the ball-like hinge portion of the metacarpal component for movement in the direction of radial-ulnar deviation. The modified ball and socket arrangement between the metacarpal component and the intermediate component permit limited rotational movement about the longitudinal axis of the arm.
