  • Patent number: 5311697
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for reducing the population of flying insects. A first transparent cylindrical container is oriented with its axis generally vertical and provides a plurality of storage shelves for holding an insect bait. Natural air convection currents flowing over the bait produce an insect-attracting scent in the vicinity of the apparatus for attracting insects to the apparatus. A second transparent cylindrical container provides a space for containing a liquid defatting agent, and has an open top lip so that the liquid may spill over the lip and run downward across the outer surface of the second container. A storage container is positioned below the second container to receive the liquid that spills over the top lip. A pump is interconnected between the storage container and the second container so as to pump the liquid from the storage container to the second container, over the top lip, and back to the storage container in a continuous process.

  • Patent number: 5311700
Abstract: An improved container for growing and holding plants for transplanting encloses the root ball in a polyurethane liner, which is then supported within a wire mesh outer basket. The polyurethane liner does not rot above ground, yet is permeable, so that the roots in the root ball air prune, forming extensive fine filamentary root growth, significantly improving the viability and health of the plant when transplanted. Although the liner of the invention does not rot above ground, it easily passes roots when the basket and root ball is planted, As a result, the basket and liner need not be removed prior to planting the plant, significantly simplifying handling of the plant.

  • Patent number: 5311707
Abstract: A joint between an upper wall part and a lower wall part of a modular tub/shower unit includes a recessed band adjacent to but spaced from the lowermost edge of the upper wall part. A further band is recessed at the uppermost edge of the lower wall part with the vertical height of that band being greater than the vertical height of the recessed band in the upper wall part and greater than a band at the lowermost edge which is not recessed. The lowermost band of the upper wall part is then adhesively attached to the uppermost edge and a part of the recessed band of the part by a double sided adhesive tape the covering of which is pulled through the gap between these parts. The adhesive tape provides the only sealant necessary for waterproofing the joint and provides the only structural strength necessary. The groove above the lowermost band of the upper wall part allows the upper wall part to be maneuvered into the required position by finger engagement into the groove.

  • Patent number: 5311712
Abstract: The present inventive building and the construction method thereof uses a joined-and-filled-in-situ casing system from which to provide the foundation, exterior walls and interior walls of a structure using materials that are high strength, extremely durable, highly insulating and fire-retardant. The present inventive building and the construction method thereof provides a solution to the excessive wastes generated during conventional construction methods by utilizing construction materials that are recycled by being shredded and used as insulating fill. The present inventive building and construction method thereof incorporates an improved electrical wiring system that is particularly suited to the above casing system. The inventive wiring system provides an improved gang-box and wire conduit means that is much easier to install than convention wiring methods. Live wires are encapsulated in a substantially fire-proof medium, and the location of wiring within walls is consistent and hence predictable.

  • Patent number: 5311733
Abstract: A golf ball retriever which can also be used as a trap rake. A head mounted upon an extendible handle includes a plurality of elongated spaced tines extending from pivoted arms. The arms are pivotal between a folded storage position and an extended open operative position and the tines are separated by a distance slightly less than the diameter of a golf ball whereby the retriever head may be "raked" through a water hazard to retrieve the balls. The rake-like orientation of the tines also permits the head to smooth sand traps.

  • Patent number: 5311734
Abstract: A method and system for cooling a gas turbine engine in conjunction with an improved gas bearing face seal assembly. The gas turbine engine has a multi-stage compressor which discharges compressor discharge air for expansion by a combustor. A cavity which is aerodynamically linked to a turbine stage on its downstream end is formed by a metal structure the upstream end of which is connected to a seal which substantially inhibits the flow of compressor discharge air into the cavity. A conduit links an intermediate stage of the multi-stage compressor to the cavity for purposes of cooling the cavity and the turbine stage components located downstream of the cavity.

  • Patent number: 5311735
Abstract: A combined turbofan and ramjet aircraft engine includes a forward bypass duct which allows the engine to operate more efficiently during the turbofan mode of operation. By mounting a ramjet preburner in the forward duct and isolating this duct from the turbofan bypass air, a transition from turbofan operation to ramjet operation can take place at lower flight Mach numbers without incurring pressure losses or blockage in the turbofan bypass air.

  • Patent number: 5311738
Abstract: An exhaust gas duct for a row of a plurality of combustion engine cylinders has an exhaust pipe section extending alongside the cylinders and a cooling housing in which the exhaust pipe section is mounted. The cooling housing has a middle longitudinal section and two end sections, one of which is a cover and the other is a mounting connector duct end ring. The middle section has substantially circular end portions with cooling liquid flow ducts therein and a flange portion for mounting to a cylinder head. The middle section is made of extruded standardized stock of light metal which facilitates the manufacture and assembly of the duct. A compact structural volume is also achieved thereby. • Patent number: 5311739
Abstract: An improved efficiency external combustion engine which utilizes separation on the thermodynamic processes that occur in an external combustion engine into components designed to maximum each operation. The external combustion engine varies flow volume of air to the combustor in response to power demands and delivers fuel to the combustor at a constant air-to-fuel ratio. The system further comprises separate compressors, combustors and expanders wherein the compressor utilizes isothermal compression, the combustor utilizes constant pressure or constant volume combustion or a combination of the two and may provide final compression, and the expander may utilize subatmospheric expansion. Exhaust heat may be regenerated and used in the primary cycle. The engine also comprises a positive lubrication system for the cylinders and pistons that allows a constant flow of a lubricant around the piston. A wide variance valve control mechanism is introduced which offers varied valve timings.

Abstract: A new hybrid electric power production cycle is revealed, which utilizes hot, dry-rock, geothermal energy to produce dry, saturated steam, and utilizes natural gas or other fossil fuel to superheat the produced steam to a desired temperature. The superheated steam would then be used in a conventional Rankine cycle to produce large-scale electric power and energy. For a preferred steam pressure of 1800 pounds per square inch and a temperature of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, the total energy consumed in the hybrid cycle would be 78% geothermal and 22% fossil-fuel.
