  • Patent number: 6507119
Abstract: A new flip-chip technology, denominated as DDFC (Direct-Downset Flip-Chip) technology, is characterized by the forming of a downset device hole in the substrate, and by the use of an array of solder bumps over the semiconductor chip and an array of recessed solder-bump pads of an inwardly-tapered conical shape over the bottom surface of the device hole for bonding the semiconductor chip to the substrate. During assembly, the semiconductor chip is embedded in a direct-downset manner into the device hole of the substrate, with the solder bumps being fitted and wetted to the recessed solder-bump pads. The proposed DDFC technology can be implemented without requiring solder-deflux or flip-chip underfill processes, thereby simplifying overall package fabrication.

  • Patent number: 6507128
Abstract: An uninterruptible power supply system has standby and backup modes and can change to backup mode upon detection of a grid fault. In both modes an alternator rotates at synchronous-speed so that backup mode capability is ready. An energy storage unit through a DC-AC inverter remains coupled to the grid in standby mode so that it is charged, ready to supply power when changed to backup mode. In standby mode, first and third clutches are disengaged and engaged, transmitting alternator rotary motion to a flywheel but not therefrom to a heat engine. In backup mode, first and third clutch are engaged and disengaged to permit the alternator, via a second clutch, to overrun the flywheel and allow transmitting of flywheel torque to accelerate the heat engine to starting speed for driving the alternator to supply power to the grid after the engine is at operating speed and coupled to the alternator through a locked second clutch and an engaged third clutch.

  • Patent number: 6507153
Abstract: The invention relates to a gas discharge lamp, in particular a high-pressure discharge lamp for use in automobiles. The invention further relates to a lighting system with at least one light source, at least one light coupling system, at least one optical waveguide, and at least one light delivery system. Such lighting systems with a central light source and a distribution of the light over optical waveguides (i.e. suitable optical fiber systems) in remote locations are particularly suitable for applications in the automobile branch. For this application, a high brightness must be available already after a short run-up time of the lamp. To provide a gas discharge lamp with a high brightness, which makes available a sufficient brightness after a short period, a gas discharge lamp is proposed with a bulb which has an ellipsoidal discharge chamber in a central location, which chamber has a surface area with a maximum value of below 2.5 cm.sup.

  • Patent number: 6507161
Abstract: The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of previously known motor controllers for centrifuge machines wherein a motor controller is provided for a centrifuge machine including a logic control module, one or more power cells, and one or more contactors. The logic control module is capable of interfacing with the main centrifuge controller and provides control over the power cells and contactors to provide a voltage ramp-up to accelerate the centrifuge basket. As such, the logic control module avoids the current draining problems associated with across the line starting of the centrifuge motor. The power cells receive a voltage from the main power supply, and output to the contactors variable power to control centrifuge motor speed. Further, the configuration of multiple contactors to reverse the power supplied to the centrifuge motor windings may eliminate the need for a second, reverse direction motor.

  • Patent number: 6507162
Abstract: A motor for moving a flap for distributing a flow of air in a duct of a heating, ventilation and/or air conditioning installation is supplied with voltage. A power-regulation module is mounted in series with the motor, and includes at least one positive-temperature-coefficient resistor, so that, when the flap reaches an open or closed position, the motor is blocked. This results in an increase in the current strength in the circuit, causing an increase in the value of the resistance, and this results in a reduction in the current strength and in the voltage at the terminals of the motor.

Abstract: A trolling motor having current based power management including: an electric motor; a motor controller having an output for providing voltage to the motor; and a current sensor for measuring the electrical current flowing through the motor. Upon determining that the trolling motor has been operating above its continuous duty limit for a predetermined period of time, the motor controller begins reducing the voltage output to the motor until reaching an acceptable output voltage. In another embodiment, the controller is operated in three distinct modes with three distinct sets of operating parameter, namely: a normal mode wherein the output is set to a commanded level; a current limit mode wherein the output is set to a safe, predetermined level; and a transitional mode wherein the output is incrementally changed from the predetermined level to the commanded level.
