Abstract: A read head comprises an MR element, two bias field applying layers, and two conductive layers. The two bias field applying layers are adjacent to both side portions of the MR element, and apply a bias magnetic field to the MR element along the longitudinal direction. The two conductive layers feed a sense current to the MR element, each of the conductive layers being disposed to be adjacent to one of surfaces of each of the bias field applying layers and to overlap one of surfaces of the MR element. The conductive layers are each made of a gold alloy having a resistivity of less than 22 &mgr;&OHgr;·cm and a hardness as high as or higher than the hardness of a material used for making the bias field applying layers.

Abstract: A ground fault detector for use in resistance grounded electrical systems. In one embodiment, the system includes a digital processor to monitor an electrical parameter of the resistance to determine and indicate whether a ground fault has occurred. Data regarding the ground fault occurrence can then be digitally stored transmitted, or processed, such as by an external computer. In another embodiment, the ground fault detector includes a filter to remove the harmonic components of the monitored electrical parameter, to avoid false alarms. In addition, in another embodiment, the ground fault detector can also determine whether a high harmonic condition is present in the monitored electrical system. The phase of the electrical system can be grounded by pressing a test switch, thereby causing a ground fault and allowing the harmonic components of the signal in the electrical system to be monitored.

Abstract: The electrical ground fault protection circuit (10) includes power and ground LINE connections (12) that are connectable to power (18a, 18b, 18c) and ground lines of an electrical distribution system. They also include power and ground LOAD connections (14) that are connectable to a load (29). Power and ground paths extend from the power and ground LINE connections to the power and ground LOAD connections and include an interrupter (72) having a connect position in which it allows current flow from the LINE connections to the LOAD connections and a disconnect position in which it interrupts such current flow. A ground line monitor (64) detects the presence or absence of a fault condition in the ground line (20). In response to the presence of a fault condition, the circuit switches the interrupter from its connect position to its disconnect position. The power path monitor (66) detects the presence or absence of a fault condition in the power path (18a, 18b, 18c).

Abstract: An apparatus and method for preventing the overheating and destruction of MOVs in an over-voltage protection circuit by providing an efficient circuit configuration, using a minimal number of components mounted in an efficient manner, to assure a rapid disconnect of the electrical power when designated MOVs begin to overheat. MOVs are incorporated in a way that provides capacity for dissipating very large transient over-voltage surges without increasing the number of thermal fuses needed for protection from overheating of the MOVs. A minimal number of thermal fuses are incorporated in such a way that a disconnection from the electrical supply is assured where necessary while the risk of acrid smoke and fire from overheated components is minimized. Thermal fuses having a relatively low opening temperature are installed using a method that avoids placing thermal stress on the fuses.

Abstract: Cilia-like micro surface actuators are applied to fins of a heat sink to improve heat dissipation. The surface actuators act as active surface features whose motion disrupts the boundary layer fluid flow by entraining cool fluid towards the heat transfer surfaces of the fins and ejecting relatively warmer fluid away from the surfaces. This disruption reduces the thermal resistance between the heat sink fins and the fluid (e.g., the convection resistance). The motion of the surface actuators also induces a net flow along the surface of the fin(s) and can, therefore, be viewed analogously to a “pump” moving fluid (such as air) over the surface. The surface actuators can be fabricated using plastic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and can be actuated to generate their motion using several techniques.

Abstract: A disk array system includes a plurality of disk drives rigidly connected to one another. The disk array system can also include a cage defining openings configured to receive the disk drives individually therein. In this configuration the disk array system can further include a locking system for rigidly securing individual disk drives into the openings in the cage to thereby rigidly connect the disk drives to one another. In an alternate configuration, the disk array system can have a chassis configured to support the plurality of disk drives. The disk drives can then be rigidly connected to one another using a connecting member rigidly connected to the disk drives. In this arrangement the disk array can also include a frame configured to support the chassis. A chassis-connecting member can then be used to rigidly connect the chassis and the frame.

Abstract: A method and circuit module package for automated switch actuator insertion provides automated assembly of circuit modules having an integrated switch actuator, such as Secure Digital cards. A switch actuator is inserted automatically into a circuit module package housing by a robotic assembler. The housing and switch actuator have mating surfaces to retain the switch actuator within the housing so that shipping and subsequent assembly do not dislodge the switch actuator. The switch actuator/housing assembly can be contoured such that the switch actuator/housing assemblies may be stacked and then fed to a stack-loading feeder for joining of the actuator/housing assemblies to the remainder of the circuit module package housing. The switch actuator may be made from a material having a higher melting point than the housing so that ultrasonic welding may be performed on the circuit module package without joining the switch actuator permanently to the circuit module package assembly.

Abstract: A method and system with a magnetically attractive breadboard and associated devices for constructing and testing electronic circuits. The breadboard can comprise a single or multi-layer circuit board with metallic foil conductors that can be connected to magnetically attractive pads. Electrical contacts between the pads and foil conductors can be made by wrapping the foil over an edge of insulating material. The insulating material can comprise a flexible insulation sheet with the desired circuit printed thereon. The electronic components are preferably supported by component holders which contain magnets that are attracted to the breadboard. The component holders facilitate attachment of the components to the foil conductors. A circuit can be built by selecting the desired component holder, plugging the component into the component holder, and then attaching the component holder to the breadboard on the proper foil conductor to complete the circuit.
