Abstract: An improved precast concrete beam element, useful as a continuous bearing structural foundation member supporting wall and floor slab loads in soil, has a unique shape and includes a bearing surface for spreading vertical loads into the soil and a wall section having a height sufficient to place the bearing surface at a specified bearing depth in the soil. Optionally, the precast beam element also includes a formed-in notch to serve as a block ledge to facilitate weathertight wall installation. By integrating both the slab form edge and the wall ledge, the beam element eliminates the need for field forming. The beam element is manufactured offsite in a mold capable of changing dimension to cast elements with differing bearing heights and differing wall thicknesses as soil and loading conditions require.

Abstract: The corner bead of the present invention includes an elongated strip of metal material with a central arcuate nose and a pair of flanges extending outwardly from the nose. A paper strip is bonded only to the outward faces of each of the flanges, with a wing portion extending beyond the outer edge of each flange. Each paper strip begins proximal to, but does not cover the nose, such that the nose is exposed after installation of the corner bead on a wallboard corner. The paper strips are applied only to the outward face of each flange. In the method of the invention, a tape-on corner bead is provided with paper strips bonded only to the outer face of the flanges of the core strip, with portions of the strips overhanging the outer edges of the flanges to form wings. A layer of joint compound is applied to a wallboard corner, and the corner bead is applied, with the inward faces of the flanges and the wings in direct contact with the joint compound.

Abstract: The PowerBrace system gives a positive solution to basement wall problems. When the wall cracks and bulges are due to freeze or hydrostatic preasure, PowerBrace can hold it from further movement and in most cases straighten it. By tightening the top bracket the PowerBrace system puts preasure on the top of the beam and straightens the wall. This movement is usually gradual as the system is retightened. Unlike many other wall repair systems the PowerBrace system does not rely on questionable soils outside the wall to hold the wall, nor does it put to much stress on the beam. Any bending of the main beam constitutes a failure in the system. By anchoring to the concrete basement floor and to the solid floor joist system, the PowerBrace system is solid and will not be aloud to shift or fail. the PowerBrace system solves problems relating to the sheering effect at the base of the wall caused by hydrostatic preasure, as well as any other wall movement.

The combustion products are expanded through a turbine for power output and then separated, such as within a condenser. Water discharged from the condenser is at least partially recirculated back to the gasifier and the gas generator. Carbon dioxide from the separator is compressed for capture without release into the atmosphere.

Abstract: A combined generator device for use in a satellite capable of generating electrical power and thrust from an optical solar image. The combined generator includes a first receiver positioned to receive and store the outer, low-intensity region of the optical solar image. An electrical power generator thermally coupled to the first receiver uses the stored thermal energy to produce electricity. The combined generator also includes a thrust generator having a second receiver. The second receiver is positioned to receive and absorb the inner, high-intensity region of the optical solar image. A heat exchanger of the combined generator transfers the thermal energy from the second receiver into a supply of propellant which is vented to a nozzle to produce thrust.

Abstract: A low-noise separated core engine type turbofan engine is provided in which noise generated by a control propulsion device is reduced by using high pressure air as the working fluid of a turbine for driving a control fan used in the attitude control of the airframe. A control fan 17 of a separated core engine type turbofan engine 1, which is comprised in a control propulsion device 4 provided for attitude control of the aircraft, is driven by an air turbine 19 which uses as working fluid high pressure air compressed by a compressor 6 of the core engine 2 and supplied through a duct 10. The speed of the working fluid which is discharged from the control fan 17 and air turbine 19 is sufficiently low for attitude control and not as high as the speed of the working fluid which is discharged from a propulsion device 3 which is provided for thrust, and thus noise generated by the control propulsion device 4 can be reduced.

Abstract: Oxygen sensors (3, 13) are provided upstream and downstream of a three-way catalytic converter (10) in an exhaust passage (9) of an internal combustion engine (1). A controller (2) performs feedback correction of an air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture burnt in the engine (1) by proportional/integral control based on the output of the upstream oxygen sensor (3). In this process, the controller (2) corrects a proportional part by a correction value based on the output of the downstream oxygen sensor (13) (S11, S12). The feedback correction is performed based on a feedback correction coefficient calculated using the proportional part and an integral part. The controller (2) further determines if there is a leak in the exhaust passage (9) based on the correction value (S61) (S62). Higher diagnostic precision is obtained than in the case where the determination is performed based directly on the feedback correction coefficient.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the desulfurization of an NOx storage catalyst situated in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, whereby, for the desulfurization, the internal combustion engine is alternatingly operated in a lean mode at &lgr;>1 and a rich mode at &lgr;<1. During the desulfurization process, the present invention provides for the progress of the desulfurization being monitored, using a change in a parameter relating to intervals (In), whereby the interval (In) lasts from the beginning of an nth rich operating phase (Tf,n), until the measured value drops below a predetermined lambda threshold value (Sf) downstream from the NOx storage catalyst (16). Furthermore, the progress of the desulfurization is monitored, using a change in a lambda probe voltage (Un) downstream from the NOx storage catalyst (16), which is determined at the end of a predetermined interval at the beginning of an nth rich operating phase (Tf,n).

Abstract: Particulate material collected in a filter (PM) is burnt through a selected one of partial and perfect regenerating processes. The partial regenerating process starts, when an amount of PM is predicted to exceed a value between 2 to 10 g/l, and terminates, when the amount of PM is predicted to fall below a value between 1 to 4 g/l, whereby a part of PM is burned to an extent that incombustible ash contained in the filter (ASH) can not easily pass through the filter. The prefect regenerating process starts, when an amount of ASH is predicted to exceed a value between 0.05 to 0.25 g/l, and terminates, when the amount of PM is predicted to fall below 1 g/l, whereby a substantially entire part of PM is burnt to an extent that ASH can easily pass through the filter.
