  • Patent number: 6632871
Abstract: The metal oxide filler of titanium oxide or silicon oxide for the crosslinkable elastomer composition which has a pH value of from 5.0 to 11.0 and contains impurity metals other than the essential metal of the filler in an amount of not more than 10,000 ppm. The metal oxide filler can be obtained by extraction treatment of a starting metal oxide filler with an acid to reduce a content of impurity metals thereof and then treatment with an alkali to neutralize a remaining acid. The metal oxide filler of the present invention does not cause a crosslinking failure even when added to the elastomer composition and can provide the elastomer molded article suitable as a very clean sealing material for semi-conductor production apparatuses.

  • Patent number: 6632873
Abstract: One aspect of the present invention is an adhesive composition formed from two packs. One pack includes an isocyanate-functional prepolymer formed by reacting a polyisocyanate with an alcohol (e.g., polyol). The isocyanate equivalents from the polyisocyanate exceed the hydroxyl equivalents from the alcohol. The second pack is an aqueous polymer emulsion. These two packs are combined to form the novel adhesive composition. Another aspect of the invention is a method for joining together two surfaces of wood products by application of an adhesive thereto. The first step in this method is to mist with water the wood product surfaces to be joined. An adhesive composition then is applied to the misted wood product surfaces. Alternatively, the water misting can be replaced with an aqueous emulsion being part of the adhesive composition. Finally, the adhesive composition is cured.

  • Patent number: 6632912
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for preparing phenol-formaldehyde thermoset resin that can contain up to 80% by weight a black liquor, preferably a sodium carbonate black liquor. Black liquor are by-products extracted from pulping process, which normally contain lignosulfonates, kraft lignin or sodium carbonate lignin as well as salts, depending on the process that is used. The use of such a black liquor permits to obtain a stable copolymerized phenol-formaldehyde thermoset resin. In the process, the black liquor is first mixed with phenol in the pressure of a base. Then, formaldehyde is added together with a base in two successive steps. The obtained thermoset resin has bonding properties that meet or exceed the CSA and ASTM requirements for the engineered forest products, such as wafer boards or oriented strand boards at pressing cycles of 16 mm per second or less.

  • Patent number: 6632914
Abstract: Polyfunctional polyisocyanate polyadducts are prepared by a process comprising (i) preparation of an adduct by reacting (a) an at least trifunctional component (a1) reactive with isocyanate groups or a difunctional component (a2) reactive with isocyanate groups or a mixture of the components (a1) and (a2) with (b) a di- or polyisocyanate, the reaction ratio being chosen so that on average the polyadduct (A) contains one isocyanate group and more than one group reactive with isocyanate groups, (ii) if required, intermolecular addition reaction of the adduct (A) to give a polyadduct (P) which contains on average one isocyanate group and more than two groups reactive with isocyanate groups, and (iii) reaction of the adduct (A) or of the polyadduct (P) with an at least difunctional component (c) reactive with isocyanate groups.

  • Patent number: 6632915
Abstract: A polyurethane comprising lateral and/or terminal ethenylarylene groups produced by reacting a polyurethane prepolymer containing free isocyanate groups with an adduct obtained by reacting an ethenylarylene monoisocyanate with a polyol, polyamine, and/or a compound containing hydroxyl and amino groups in a molar ratio of 1:1. Also, a graft copolymer comprising a hydrophobic core comprising at least one monomer and a hydrophilic shell comprising the polyurethane, or a hydrophobic core comprising the polyurethane and a hydrophilic shell that comprises at least one monomer. Also, a graft copolymer comprising a hydrophobic core comprising at least one monomer and a hydrophilic shell comprising a polyurethane produced by dispersing at least one hydrophilic olefinic unsaturated polyurethane comprising lateral, and optionally terminal, ethenylarylene groups in an aqueous medium and copolymerizing at least one hydrophobic monomer in the polyurethane in emulsion.

  • Patent number: 6632917
Abstract: A preblended additive composition and process for the preparation of polyester resins useful in the manufacture of plastic containers such as bottles is disclosed. The additive composition includes a cobalt-containing compound that is preblended with a phosphorous compound. The polyester resin, e.g., a PET resin, may be prepared by reacting ethylene glycol with dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) or terephthalic acid (TA) in an esterification reaction. The additive composition may be prepared by quickly dumping the phosphorus compound into the cobalt compound such as cobalt acetate, and the resulting composition is added to the reactor vessel before the polycondensation reaction. On the other hand, the additive composition may be prepared by slowly dumping the phosphorus compound into the cobalt compound over a period of at least 5 minutes. Such preblending substantially eliminates any yellow or blue color, or haze in the product article.
