Abstract: A misfire detection system is provided including an internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber and an exhaust system in fluid communication with the combustion chamber. An acoustic sensor is associated with either the combustion chamber or the exhaust system for sensing noise. The controller receives a signal from the acoustic sensor for determining whether the noise is indicative of misfire. One or more acoustic sensors may be fluidly and/or mechanically coupled to the engine or other portion of the powertrain system. The acoustic sensor generates a signal having a frequency that may be compared to engine temperatures, speeds, and loads to determine whether a misfire event has occurred in one of the cylinders. The signature of the frequency may be determined and compared with a known set of frequencies for desired engine operation to determine whether a misfire has occurred.

Abstract: An apparatus and system are disclosed for in situ measurement of downhole fluid flow using Doppler techniques. First, a baseline speed of sound is established as close to the desired measurement point as possible. This speed of sound measurement is then used in Doppler calculations for determining flow velocities based from induced Doppler shift resulting from fluid flow. A heterodyne receiver arrangement is preferably used for processing so that the flow direction can be determined and the detection sensitivity for low flow velocities can be enhanced. From in situ measurements, well kicks may be spotted and dealt with in real-time. In addition, current theoretical models of Theological properties may be verified and expounded upon using in situ downhole measurement techniques. Furthermore, the velocity measurements described herein can be used to recognize downhole lost circulation and/or gas/water/oil influxes as early as possible, even when the mud recirculation pumps are turned off.

Abstract: Formed Laser Sources (FLS) using pulsed laser light for generation of ultrasonic stress waves are combined with air-coupled detection of ultrasound to provide for the hybrid non-contact, dynamic and remote ultrasonic testing of structural materials, especially railroad tracks. Using this hybrid technique, multimode and controlled frequency and wavefront surface acoustic waves, plate waves, guided waves, and bulk waves are generated to propagate on and within the rail tracks. The non-contact, remote nature of this methodology enables high-speed, full access inspections of rail tracks. The flexibility and remote nature of this methodology makes possible the detection of critical cracks that are not easy, or impossible to detect, with current inspection techniques available to the railroad industry. For purpose of field testing, the equipment of the present invention can be located above the top surface of the rail.

Abstract: A method for recovering catalytic metals from fluid compositions containing catalytic metal colloids. Fluid compositions such as aqueous rinse solutions or dragout baths containing catalytic metal colloids are passed through a porous metal filter that entraps the catalytic metal colloids. The catalytic metal colloids have a high affinity for the porous metal filter in contrast to other components of the fluids. The other components of the fluids pass through the porous metal filter while the catalytic metal colloids concentrate on the porous metal filter. The catalytic metal colloids that are captured on the porous metal filter are removed from the filter by backwashing the filter with a gas and/or a liquid. The backwashing forces the catalytic metal colloids off of the porous metal filter and through a solids discharge valve and into a solids collection container. The method is economically efficient with high catalytic metal recovery and is environmentally friendly.

Abstract: A method and control system for forming workpiece surfaces with at least a portion being non-rotationally symmetric (i.e., axis asymmetric) is provided. In one aspect, a slow tool servo system is provided to fabricate a surface having at least an axis asymmetric portion, and optionally, a superimposed axis symmetric asphere or spherical portion. A workpiece is mounted on a spindle and a tool is mounted to a translatable tabletop surface. The z position of the contact point of the workpiece and working tool is determined as a function of the x position of the same contact point and as a function of the angle of rotation of the spindle about the spindle axis. By making the z position of the contact point a function of both the angle of spindle rotation and the x position, the lateral and longitudinal position of the working tool can be moved at designated spindle rotation angles to form a surface having both axis asymmetric and axis symmetric asphere or spherical portions.

Abstract: A machine for fabricating ornamental bows feeds slit sheet material from a roll, and cuts trapezoidal or truncated-triangle portions from the roll. The cut sheets are translated by a rotatable transfer head to a roll-up station, where a folding apparatus or harp receives the sheets. The folding harp has smaller dimensions than the separated sheets, so there is an overlap. The harp folds, to juxtapose border portions of the sheets. A hold-down bar presses the protruding borders onto a row of needles on the upper surface of a roll-up bar. An element guard bar is lowered, to press loops of the bow onto a front surface of the roll-up bar. A collet is introduced and grasps the sheets, and is raised and rotated to roll up one edge of the sheets against the upper surface of the roll-up bar. When rolling is finished, fingers grasp the hub of the bow, and the collet is retracted. The fingers carry the bow to a glue operation for finishing.
