Publication number: 20060192054Abstract: An illustrative embodiment of the invention includes an apparatus and method for making air and space inflatables and deployables using three dimensionally reinforced (3DR) membranes. A 3DR process preferably takes plural substantially flat gore segments, each segment made of plural membranes and reinforcing fibers, and joins adjacent gores so the seams on opposite sides are offset. Single ply seam tape may be used. When all gores are joined, a three dimensional deployable or inflatable (e.g., balloon) structure with a minimized seam is produced. Further, localized fiber reinforcement may be used, with different characteristics depending on the desired placement in the gore, allowing the substantially flat gores, when joined and loaded, to strain to the desired three dimensional shape. In doing so, the required number of gores and seams may be reduced, while using materials with significantly lower areal densities.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 13, 2005Publication date: August 31, 2006Inventor: Timothy Lachenmeier

Publication number: 20060192090Abstract: A system for accurate determination of target orientation in a laser tracking system. A target aperture is configured to produce spatially distinct laser beam and background images. A processing unit is configured to determine a centroid of the laser beam image position using information collected from detected images, such as laser beam and background images. The laser beam image centroid position is used to determine an accurate target orientation. In one example, a process for determining target orientation includes the steps of collecting a background image passing through a first retro-reflector at a first laser light sensor; 2) collecting a measurement image passing through a second retro-reflector at a second laser light sensor; 3) establishing a common positional reference point for the measurement image and the background image; 4) subtracting the background image from the measurement image based on the common positional reference point.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2006Publication date: August 31, 2006Inventor: Kam Lau

Publication number: 20060192092Abstract: Two detection heads are arranged opposite to each other with respect to a scale. On the scale, there is provided a discontinuous portion formed in a reflecting portion to enable detection of original point position. The original point is determined by detecting the discontinuous portion by one detection head. The absolute position of the original position in measurement is determined additionally taking into account a signal output from the other detection head at that time. Position information is calculated with reference to that absolute position to thereby reduce positional displacement of the original point that may be caused by environmental changes etc.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2006Publication date: August 31, 2006Applicant: CANON KABUSHIKI KAISHAInventors: Akio Atsuta, Masahiko Igaki
