  • Patent number: 7158325
Abstract: A disk drive detects head touchdown based on a magnitude of a position error signal at a discrete frequency. The discrete frequency is one-half the disk rotation frequency or an integral multiple of the disk rotation frequency. The head is heated by turning on a heater at the discrete frequency, thereby injecting bias into a servo system that increases the PES magnitude. In addition, the servo system has a first transfer function for tracking the head during read and write operations and a second transfer function for tracking the head during head touchdown detection. The second transfer function has smaller vibration rejection than the first transfer function so that the disk drive is less sensitive to vibration during read and write operations than during head touchdown detection.

  • Patent number: 7158328
Abstract: A disc drive having a multi-phase acceleration procedure is disclosed. The multi-phase acceleration procedure accelerates a data storage disc in the disc drive from an initial rotational velocity to a final rotational velocity. As the disc reaches the final rotational velocity, a read/write head operable to access data on the disc is moved by a servo control system from a landing zone to a data region on the disc. An air bearing between a slider of the read/write head and the surface of the disc is created due to the final rotational velocity of the spinning disc. The read/write head may also be moved from the landing zone as the disc reaches an early exit rotational velocity. As such, the multi-phase acceleration procedure continues accelerating the disc until the final rotational velocity to guarantee that the air bearing is maintained between the head and the disc.

  • Patent number: 7158349
Abstract: A ramp member is supported on a flying slider in a load/unload mechanism of a recording medium drive. The flying slider receives a lift at its air bearing surface based on airflow generated along the moving recording medium. The flying slider flies above the recording medium. The flying height of the flying slider can be controlled with a higher accuracy in the same manner as a flying head slider utilized to read and write data from and into the recording medium. The slope of the ramp member on the flying slider can accordingly be kept at a predetermined level above the recording medium with a higher accuracy. Even if the extent of the slope is reduced, the load bar is allowed to reliably contact the slope. This leads to expansion of the data zone on the recording medium.
