Abstract: A SIP proxy server embedded in a cable modem or other SIP user device coupled to a cable modem or similar network interface device processes SIP messages associated with SIP communication sessions. The SIP proxy server instructs a QoS manager client, typically also embedded in the cable modem, to communicate with a corresponding QoS manager client at the CMTS. In response to the instruction from the SIP proxy server, the QoS managers cooperate to establish a requested amount of bandwidth to the SIP session. The amount of bandwidth is typically requested in initial SIP set up messaging.

Abstract: A device for wirelessly transmitting data under a wireless protocol is contemplated. A remote wireless network device initiates a session with a network. In this manner, information is sent to a gateway associated with the access point that couples the remote wireless network device to the network. When the remote wireless network device moves, data is tunneled between the succeeding gateway and the original gateway, but for those sessions opened at the original gateway. Any sessions associated with the remote wireless network device at the new gateway are processed and maintained by the new gateway without tunneling the data.

Abstract: System management functions are remotely performed on customer premises equipment (CPE), such a residential gateway, even if the CPE has not been authenticated or dynamically allocated an IP address or otherwise is not in a state that enables normal communication with the network. CPE management information is communicated using an IP address identifying a destination CPE but exclusively associated with CPE management. The access node that receives the CPE management information reconfigures the packets to translate the address to a fixed, non-public address. The same fixed address can be shared by all of the CPE's connected to the access node. The CPE recognizes the fixed address as though it were being addressed locally rather than through the network and is therefore able to receive the CPE management information even if the CPE has not been authenticated or dynamically allocated an IP address.

The laser has a broadband (preferably?15 nm) spectrum of emission and a high output power (preferably?100 mW). Special measures control the maximum useful pump level, the total number of quantum dots in the laser active region, the carrier relaxation to the quantum dot ground states, and the carrier excitation from the quantum dot ground states. In one embodiment, a spectrally-selective loss is introduced into the laser resonator in order to suppress lasing on a quantum dot excited-state optical transition, thereby increasing the bandwidth of the emission spectrum.

Abstract: A semiconductor laser diode includes, on a substrate, a first cladding layer; an active layer formed on the first cladding layer; a second cladding layer formed on the active layer and having a ridge stripe for injecting a current into the active layer; and a light emitting portion formed on both sides of the ridge stripe and having a current blocking layer for confining the current in the ridge stripe. A distance from a lower face of the current blocking layer to an upper face of the active layer is within a given range. Also, the current spreads beyond a width of the ridge stripe after passing the ridge stripe and before reaching the active layer.

Abstract: The present invention provides a complex optical device capable of decreasing electric power consumption, generating a high quality laser, and modulating the laser without degradation. The complex optical device includes a laser diode element (LD) and an electroabsorption modulator element (EAM) which are formed on the same substrate and optically coupled with each other. Both of the LD and the EAM are formed from a semiconductive upper cladding layer having a first conductive type, an insulating core layer, and a semiconductive lower cladding layer having a second conductive type opposite to the first conductive type. The electrical isolation layer extending through the core layer from the surface of the upper cladding layer up to the surface of the substrate is formed by an ion injection at an area between the LD and the EAM to isolate the LD and the EAM electrically.

Abstract: A DBR structure in a VCSEL diode, a method of manufacturing the DBR structure, and a VCSEL diode are provided. The DBR structure in the VCSEL diode includes: an InAlGaAs layer having a predetermined refractive index and disposed on an InP substrate; a first InAlAs layer having a lower refractive index than the InAlGaAs layer and disposed on the InAlGaAs layer; an InP layer having a lower refractive index than the InAlGaAs layer and disposed on the first InAlAs layer; and a second InAlAs layer having a lower refractive index than the InAlGaAs layer and disposed on the InP layer. Thus, the DBR structure can reduce optical loss due to type-II band line-up at a junction between the InAlGaAs layer and the InP layer, and thus improve device characteristics.

The output facet of the laser diode is coated with a partial reflection coating and the cavity side facet is coated with an anti-reflection coating. A roof-top prism or corner cube retroreflector serves as the laser cavity end reflector and provides stability of the wavelength of the output over time. The laser cavity lies between the partial reflective coated facet of the laser diode and retroreflector. A collimating lens and a thin film filter are located between the end reflector and the laser diode cavity side facet. The lasing wavelength can be adjusted during either manufacture or operation by tilting the filter. Also included is thermal compensation in the mounting for the retroreflector to compensate for thermal movement of the laser system cavity.
