Abstract: In a magnetic refrigerator, a permanent magnet unit shaped like a hub is so rotated as to face an annular magnetic unit having magnetic blocks arranged in a circumferential direction. The permanent magnet unit is also arranged to be concentric with a magnetic unit and has an inner and outer diameters substantially equal to those of the magnetic unit. Each of the magnetic blocks has positive and negative magnetic segments alternately arranged with predetermined gaps. As the permanent magnet unit rotates, heat conducting members are inserted into and removed from the gaps between the magnetic segments of the magnetic block. This allows heat generated from the magnetic segments to conduct in one direction.

Abstract: In a heat transporting apparatus, a cylinder is filled with a refrigerant and pistons are arranged in the cylinder, which compress and expand the refrigerant in the cylinder. A magnet unit is movably provided around the cylinder to apply a magnetic field to the cylinder, which is alternately increased and decreased in accordance with a movement of the magnet unit. A thermal accumulator is received in the cylinder, which produces heat depending on one of the increasing and decreasing of the magnetic field at the compression of the refrigerant, and absorbs heat depending on the other of the increasing and decreasing of the magnetic field at the expansion of the refrigerant. Heat exchangers are located in the cylinder, which radiates the heat from the refrigerant and thermal accumulator to an exterior of the apparatus, and absorbs external heat and transfers the heat to the refrigerant and thermal accumulator.

Abstract: The refrigerant charge adequacy of an air conditioning system is determined by the sensing of two temperatures in the system, one being at a midpoint in a condenser coil and the other being the temperature in the liquid line of the condenser discharge, with the difference then being indicative of the degree of subcooling, which, in turn, may be indicative of refrigerant charge condition. The method is refined by measuring a third temperature at the compressor discharge, with the three temperature values then being used to calculate a pair of residual values which provide an indication of whether the two temperature approach is useful in determining charge adequacy under the existing conditions and if not, whether the system is overcharged or undercharged.

Abstract: A supercritical refrigeration cycle comprises a radiator 2 for cooling the refrigerant discharged from a compressor 1, a cooling fan 2a for blowing the atmospheric air to the radiator 2, a decompression unit 4 for decompressing the refrigerant at the outlet of the radiator 2 and having the opening degree thereof controlled to achieve a target high pressure, and an evaporator 5 for evaporating the low-pressure refrigerant decompressed by the decompression unit 4. The high pressure exceeds the critical pressure of the refrigerant. A value of information representing the difference between the actual radiation state of the refrigerant at the outlet of the radiator 2 and the ideal radiation state determined by the atmospheric temperature is calculated, and based on this value of information, the air capacity of the cooling fan 2a is controlled to decrease the difference. Thus, the cooling fan of the high-pressure radiator can be properly controlled in the supercritical refrigeration cycle.

Abstract: Ice condensed in a portion in a case in which a cryogenic refrigerator is installed, which is cooled by the cryogenic refrigerator, is melted by increasing a temperature of the ice to a melting point of the ice or higher. Then, while the temperature of the melted ice and a pressure thereof are kept to be equal to or higher than a freezing point of water, the pressure is reduced by rough evacuation so as to vaporize water. At a time at which the water is discharged, the pressure is further reduced so as to discharge water vapor. In this manner, regeneration of water is performed in accordance with a state of the water (i.e., a solid state, a liquid state, and a gas state), thereby shortening a regeneration time.

Abstract: A process for shaping or preparation of a preform cone of desired shape and dimensions including diameter is provided. The process is characterized by preparing the preform cone either at the mother preform stage or at daughter preform stage without requiring the step of heating the preform end of the mother preform or the daughter preform to a very high temperature and without requiring a step of cooling of the preform cone thus prepared wherein the preform cone is prepared by cutting the preform end or shaping the preform cone at one end of the mother preform or daughter preform by employing a high pressure water-jet. A mother preform and daughter preform having preform cone of desired shape and dimensions, and optical fiber produced from said mother preform and said daughter preform are also provided.
