  • Patent number: 7245418
Abstract: An OFF state, maximum attenuation level, for an electro-optic attenuator/switch results when either a first or second control voltage is applied to the control input. An AC generator, coupled to the control input, generates minimum and maximum peak voltages that correspond to the first and second control voltages, respectively, so that the maximum attenuation level of the light beam being switched is provided by the electro-optic attenuator while either of the minimum and maximum peak voltages is applied to the control input. An ON state is achieved by introducing a voltage pulse with a magnitude corresponding to the minimum attenuation level. The ON voltage pulse is added to the square wave. This permits operation of the electro-optic switch in a normally OFF state without requiring a DC bias voltage.

  • Patent number: 7245419
Abstract: In an optical amplifier, passively wavelength-stabilized pump diodes generate pumping light to excite a gain medium (e.g., rare-earth-ion doped optical fiber or solid-state optical amplifier) near an absorption peak of the gain medium. The gain medium amplifies a pulsed laser signal coupled into the gain medium to a high peak power with minimal non-linear distortion. The gain medium may include a portion configured to receive the pumping light and another portion configured to amplify the pulsed laser signal. A volume phase hologram device may passively wavelength stabilize the pump diodes by reflecting a portion of the pumping light back to the pump diodes. Passively wavelength-stabilizing the pump diodes improves power efficiency of the optical amplifier.

  • Patent number: 7245420
Abstract: The lifetime of optical components used in deep-UV (DUV) excimer laser systems, including systems in a MOPA configuration, can be increased by reducing the intensity of pulses incident upon these components. In one approach, an output pulse can be “stretched” in order to reduce the peak power of the pulse. A pulse stretching component can be used, which can be mounted outside the laser enclosure with a horizontal beam path in order to provide a delay line with a minimum impact on the laser system footprint. The horizontal beam path also can minimize the number of optical components in the arm containing the high power beam. A beamsplitting prism can be used with the delay line to avoid the rapid degradation of coatings otherwise exposed to intense UV beams. The prism can expand the beam in the delay line in order to minimize beam intensity and losses due to reflection.

  • Patent number: 7245424
Abstract: A device amplifies light at wavelengths in the vicinity of 1420-1530 nm, using thulium doped silica-based optical fiber. This wavelength band is of interest as it falls in the low-loss optical fiber telecommunications window, and is somewhat shorter in wavelength than the currently standard erbium doped silica fiber amplifier. The device thus extends the band of wavelengths which can be supported for long-distance telecommunications. The additional wavelength band allows the data transmission rate to be substantially increased via wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), with minimal modification to the standard equipment currently used for WDM systems. The host glass is directly compatible with standard silica-based telecommunications fiber. The invention also enables modified silicate based amplifiers and lasers on a variety of alternative transitions. Specifically, an S-band thulium doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) using a true silicate fiber host is described.

Abstract: A read circuit for providing multi-bit disk data to a disk controller in correspondence to analog data from a disk head, includes a low frequency clock generator whose phase is adjustable in response to a detection of the synchronization marker in the analog disk data. A high frequency clock is phase-locked to the output of the disk head, and synchronizes operation of an A/D converter and a bit detector which produces a verified single-bit based on the A/D output. A serial-to-parallel converter converts the single bit output from the bit detector to a parallel output, and the parallel output is latched to multi-bit disk data for use by the disk controller in accordance with a low frequency clock. The low frequency clock is generated by a clock generator from the high frequency clock with a phase that is adjustable in response to the synchronization mark detector.

  • Patent number: 7245450
Abstract: A fully synchronous longitudinal position (LPOS) detection system is provided for improving the reliability of servo channels in tape systems. The system is based on the interpolation of the servo channel output signal, which is sampled by an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at a fixed sampling rate, using a clock at a nominal frequency, so that interpolated signal samples are obtained at a predetermined fixed rate, independent of tape velocity. This predetermined fixed rate is defined in terms of samples per unit of length, as opposed to samples per unit of time, which is the measure of the ADC sampling rate. The resolution with which the servo channel signal is obtained at the interpolator output is thus determined by the step interpolation distance.

  • Patent number: 7245451
Abstract: The amount of position error written into a servo burst pattern can be reduced by using additional media revolutions to write the pattern. Where the edges of two servo bursts are used to define a position on the media, trimming the first burst and writing the second burst on separate revolutions will result in a different amount of position error being written into each burst. The end result will be a reduction in the overall error in position information. In order to further reduce the position error given by a burst pair, each burst also can be trimmed and/or written in multiple passes. Additional bursts can also be written, such as for each data track centerline. This description is not intended to be a complete description of, or limit the scope of, the invention. Other features, aspects, and objects of the invention can be obtained from a review of the specification, the figures, and the claims.

  • Patent number: 7245457
Abstract: A magnetic disk drive includes a magnetic disk and a femto slider. The magnetic disk has a minimum track linear velocity of 1 to 5 m/s. In one embodiment, the magnetic disk drive includes a negative pressure type femto slider and adopts a load/unload method. A gram load “GL” of a head suspension assembly HSA is set at a value exceeding about 3 mN and smaller than about 15 mN and a pitch static attitude “PSA” (deg) and pitch stiffness “Kp” (Nm/deg) satisfy the expression ((PSA×Kp)/GL)<0.25 mm. As a result, it is possible to prevent the femto slider from assuming a meta-stable flying high state referred to as a bi-stable height. Further, by setting the pitch static attitude “PSA” at a value of larger than 0 deg, it is possible to prevent the slider from assuming a state of meta-stable contact with the magnetic disk surface referred to as semi-stable drag.

Abstract: Magnetic sensors are fabricated with an initial length that is slightly longer than their finished length. The sensors are then critically lapped and exposed for target signal output. The final target length of the sensors is obtained by first exposing the sensors to a photolithographic process and then directly lapping the excess length from the sensors. The length of sensor material that is removed is in the range of several nanometers. The target end point during lapping may be ascertained by detecting the change in resistance between the sensor and leads in the lapping tool as the excess material is lapped from the sensor.
