Abstract: The present invention intends to provide a surface-emitting laser light source capable of generating a linearly polarized laser light having a single-lobed beam profile that takes the largest intensity value in its central area. A two-dimensional photonic crystal consisting of a plate member 31 with holes 311 or 312 arranged in a square lattice pattern is provided on one side of an active layer 23. The hole 311 or 312 is designed so that its plane shape on the emission side (plane “B”) is smaller than that on the active layer side (plane “C”). The center of gravity of the shape on plane “B” is displaced from that of the shape on plane “C” in the in-plane direction. This design lowers the degree of the in-plane symmetry of the two-dimensional photonic crystal, so that a linearly polarized laser light having a single lobe is obtained.

The data relating to a single symbol is transmitted between the data link layer platform and a given one of DMT processing modules in a plurality of data portions spaced apart in time. The data portions relating to different channels of a given DMT processing module (or to different DMT processing modules) are interleaved in time. Since the data portions of a given symbol are spaced apart in time, the data relating to a single symbol is transmitted over a longer time period than in conventional devices which reduces the effective burstiness of the traffic, and thus reduces the memory requirements of the data link layer platform.

Abstract: The uncompressed wireless transmission of video, as with many other wireless applications, requires constant knowledge of channel characteristics at the receiver end. To estimate the channel and track its changes, pilots containing known data are sent in various parts of the used bandwidth. The use of such pilots reduces the effective bandwidth available for data transmission. Due to the relative high immunity to introduced interference of certain transmission modes, such as QPSK and QAM, pilots can be modulated by digital data components. At the receiver, pilots are demodulated and used for a decision-directed circuit to determine the characteristics of the transmission channel. The additional bandwidth allows a higher data rate which may be such used for various purposes as diversity, coding, etc. Such use of pilot signals is of particular advantage in the wireless transmission of the DC and near DC components of essentially uncompressed video.

Abstract: An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) demodulator demodulates an OFDM signal constituted by OFDM symbols each including at least an effective symbol and a scattered known signal. The OFDM demodulator includes a Fourier transform performing unit, a known signal extracting unit, a time dimension interpolation unit, a delay spread generating unit, a frequency dimension interpolation unit, and a waveform equalizing unit. The delay spread generating unit employs a time difference between a time point for a starting position of the Fourier transform operation performed by the Fourier transform performing unit and a time point at which a latest arriving path arrived as the delay spread.

Abstract: In a radio-controlled device for measuring time, a demodulating unit demodulates the time information from the received electric signal based on amplitude information of the target radio wave. The amplitude information is obtained from in-phase and quadrature-phase components of the target radio wave. A phase calculator calculates phase data associated with a phase of the target radio wave based on the in-phase and quadrature-phase components. A variability calculator calculates a variability of the phase data of the target radio wave relative to a reference phase. The reference phase changes at a constant rate in time according to a frequency error. The frequency error is contained in the reference signal relative to a frequency of the target carrier wave. A reception determining unit determines whether reception of the radio-controlled device is good based on the calculated variability.
