Abstract: The INERTIAL SENSOR TRACKING SYSTEM is an overall system installation consisting of wireless body pack transmitters, broadband telemetry transceivers, computer and monitoring equipment, and emergency power generation for tracking personnel in an underground mine environment. The system is designed to function with normal primary power and on battery operation in the event of an emergency. In the past inertial sensors have been large spinning mass gyroscopes and large mass-based accelerometers. These inertial sensors have required high voltage three phase electrical supplies. The “wearable” body pack must be battery operated and the sensors must be small and lightweight. Micro-Electro-Mechanical (MEM) sensors fulfill both the requirements of low weight and low power consumption. The accuracy of the MEM sensor has been developed sufficiently to incorporate, with de-noising algorithms, an accurate position-sensing device.

The wireless communication device is configured to communicate with a terrestrial communication network such as a cell phone network. The wireless communication device is effective in coastal and inland waters, and the reduced size as compared with satellite telephones makes the device practical use during recreational water activities. Various buoyant components including personal floatation devices, waterproof containers, and gas trapping encapsualtions are disclosed.

Abstract: An energy constrained device (100) includes a motion sensor (150) operative to detect motion of the device (100); a device position determinator (130); and a controller (110) operatively coupled to the motion sensor (150) and to the device position determinator (130) and operative to receive a device location request for the energy constrained device (100), to determine whether the energy constrained device (100) has moved based on the motion sensor (150), and to determine whether to request position information from the device position determinator (130) based on device movement. A method for saving power for a device position determinator (130) in a energy constrained device (100) includes determining whether position information has been requested from the device position determinator (130); and if not so, automatically switching the device position determinator (130) to a low power consumption mode.

Abstract: A security system for shipping containers transported onboard a vessel detects intrusions into the containers and transmits a security message to a land-based security monitoring station that identifies the container and the current geographic location of the vessel. Each container protected by the security system is provided with a cellular telephone that initiates a limited range telephone call transmission in response to an intrusion. Multiple base stations spread over the vessel each receive calls from proximal containers and forwards call messages to the vessel's communication system which retransmits the call information in the form of the security message to the land based monitoring station.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an Apparatus for measuring torque in a shaft or driveline component of a vehicle. A radio frequency (RF) tag is connected to the shaft to facilitate communication to an RF reader and is capable of storing at least one sensed physical characteristic such as torque. A torque sensor is operatively connected to the shaft in communication with the RF tag. The RF reader includes a transmitter provided to send modulated radio frequency transmissions to both supply power to the RF tag and associated sensor and trigger a responsive transmission signal indicative of sensed torque. The frequency tag reader is positioned adjacent to the shaft and operable to read the signal transmitted by the RF tag. The RF tag may be continuously triggered and read by the RF modulator/reader in rapid cycles to facilitate continuous monitoring of object to be sensed.

Abstract: This invention relates to control systems for technological processes. A system for precluding unauthorized control of an environmentally hazardous technological process comprises means located in premises closed by doors and purposed to automatic stop of a technological process when preset critical parameter values defining hazard of a technological process are reached, the said premise doors being provided with locks comprising timers for delaying closing the doors for a time not less than 8 hours after the time of starting actions for opening them, and the said means for automatic stop of a technological process being provided with energy accumulators for powering the said means for automatic stop of a technological process for at least 8 hours.

Abstract: A point-of-entry security system for ground-based mass transit vehicles is disclosed. The invention employs an electromagnetic field generator attached to, or incorporated within, the doorframe or entranceway of said vehicle for sensing or detecting metallic objects being carried by passengers attempting to board the vehicle. The security system is designed to audibly and/or visibly alert the operator of said vehicle of a security breach. An optional wireless sending unit may be employed to transmit system data or security alerts to remote security personnel or to remote locations.

Abstract: Film material for occupant detection in a vehicle is patterned for noise reduction. Flexible circuit material is used for positioning one or more antennas or sensors for occupant detection within a seat. The flexible circuit material is between the fabric or seat covering material and foam. Holes in the flexible circuit material may reduce noise caused by the flexible circuit material. For occupant detection with antennas and transmitted energy, such as capacitance or electric field sensing, the holes may reduce noise even when the holes are smaller than the antennas.
