Patent number: 7405388Abstract: This invention can be attached to the head of a milling machine and performs the functions of a center scope and an edge finder. Unlike a center scope or an edge finder it does not have to be removed from the machine before the machine is used. The invention performs this function by processing images from two cameras that are shot from off axis vantage points. The two images are processed to create a synthetic image that appears to be shot from the on axis vantage point. The processor adds a cross hair to the image to indicate that point on the workpiece that is exactly at the center axis of the quill. This allows the machine operator to exactly position the spindle precisely over a target point on the workpiece in a convent and safe manner.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2005Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Inventor: Peter V. Patent number: 7405394Abstract: In a cluster ion beam irradiation apparatus including an apparatus for measuring size and energy distribution of gas cluster ions by using the time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry, a unit for applying a retarding voltage is disposed in a stage preceding a TOF measuring instrument including a drift tube and a current measuring instrument. By measuring the size and energy distribution of the gas cluster ions and adjusting ionization conditions, cluster ions having predetermined energy and size are supplied to a work surface. In addition, a product of a pressure in an ion transportation device and an ion transportation length is controlled so as to satisfy the relation P×L?30/N2/3/E1/2 Pa·m, where N is the size of gas cluster ions used for irradiation, and E is kinetic energy (eV) of the gas cluster ions.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2005Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Shigeru Ono, Shinji Sasaki, Kenji Furusawa, Jiro Matsuo, Toshio Seki

Patent number: 7405395Abstract: Provided is a method of transporting fluid which involves acoustic ejection into a small opening. The opening may be, for example, the inlet opening of a sample vessel. Alternatively, it may be an opening in a microfluidic device. The ejection is typically, but not necessarily carried out through the application of focused acoustic energy. The fluid being transported typically comprises a moiety of interest for analysis or further processing, which may be a biomolecule. The volumes of transported fluid may be in the nanoliter or picoliter range. Ejection may occur from very small volumes and the ejected droplet may carry away a significant fraction of the volume from which ejection occurs.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2005Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: Picoliter, Inc.Inventors: Richard N. Ellson, Mitchell W. Mutz

Patent number: 7405397Abstract: A laser desorption ion source provides enhanced ion sampling efficiency and measurement sensitivity by using one or more ion guides to effectively capture ions in a plume emitted from the ion target and guide the ions through an aperture into a downstream vacuum chamber. In one configuration using two RF multipole ion guides, a first RF multipole ion guide disposed next to the ion target is selected to be sufficiently large to capture a substantial portion of the plume, while the second RF multipole ion guide disposed between the first multipole ion guide and the aperture has a smaller dimension to assist focusing of ions into the aperture. The first RF multipole ion guides the ions in the plume into the second RF multipole ion guide, which then focuses the ions so that they pass through the aperture into the downstream vacuum chamber.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2005Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: MDS Sciex Inc.Inventors: Thomas R. Patent number: 7405398Abstract: A mass spectrometer interface, having improved sensitivity and reduced chemical background, is disclosed. The mass spectrometer interface provides improved desolvation, chemical selectivity and ion transport. A flow of partially solvated ions is transported along a tortuous path into a region of disturbance of flow, where ions and neutral molecules collide and mix. Thermal energy is applied to the region of disturbance to promote liberation of at least some of the ionized particles from any attached impurities, thereby increasing the concentration of the ionized particles having the characteristic m/z ratios in the flow. Molecular reactions and low pressure ionization methods can also be performed for selective removal or enhancement of particular ions.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2006Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: IONICS Mass Spectrometry Group, Inc.Inventors: Charles Jolliffe, Gholamreza Javahery, Lisa Cousins

Patent number: 7405399Abstract: Methods for applying an RF field in a two-dimensional electrode structure include applying RF voltages to main electrodes and to compensation electrodes. The voltages on the compensation electrodes may be proportional to the voltages on the main electrodes so as to optimize the RF field for processes involving ion excitation, including collision-induced dissociation. Electrode structures may include main trapping electrodes, one or more compensation electrodes, one or more ion exit apertures, and a device or circuitry for applying the various desired voltages.Type: GrantFiled: January 30, 2006Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: Varian, Inc.Inventor: Gregory J. Patent number: 7405400Abstract: Methods for applying an RF field in a two-dimensional electrode structure include applying RF voltages to one or more main electrodes and compensation electrodes. The voltages on the one or more compensation electrodes may be adjusted to be proportional to the voltages on the main electrodes. The adjustment(s) may be done to optimize the RF field for different modes of operation such as ion ejection and ion dissociation. For dissociation and other procedures involving ion excitation, the voltages applied to the one or more compensation electrodes may be different from the voltages applied to the one or more main electrodes. Patent number: 7405401Abstract: There is disclosed a method of selectively extracting ions comprising the steps of: providing a supply of ions in a body of gas; generating a ponderomotive ion trapping potential generally along an axis; generating further potentials to provide an effective potential which prevents ions from being extracted from an extraction region; trapping ions in said effective potential; and selectively extracting ions of a predetermined m/z ratio or ion mobility from the extraction region; in which the characteristics of the effective potential which prevent ions from being extracted from the extraction region are caused, at least in part, by the generation of the ponderomotive ion trapping potential.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2006Date of Patent: July 29, 2008Assignee: Micromass UK LimitedInventor: John Brian Hoyes
