  • Patent number: 7511912
Abstract: Method and apparatus for certifying servo sectors on recording surfaces of a disc stack of a data storage device to promote servo sector alignment among the various recording surfaces. A reference servo sector pattern is written to a first recording surface, the reference pattern comprising a plurality of angularly spaced apart servo sectors. Multiple interleaved sets of servo sector patterns are written to each of the remaining recording surfaces, each interleaved pattern respectively comprising a plurality of angularly spaced apart servo sectors. A selected interleaved pattern is identified from each of the remaining surfaces that provides a desired alignment with the reference servo sector pattern, and the non-selected servo sector patterns are overwritten. The servo patterns can be written to the discs prior to installation using a multiple disc writing (MDW) station, or after installation of the discs into the data storage device using a servo track writing (STW) station.

  • Patent number: 7511913
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide an approach in the time domain, instead of the frequency domain, for analyzing and correcting for radial propagation instability in servo-writing. In one embodiment, a system for controlling a read/write head of a disk drive to correct propagation errors during self-servo writing on a disk comprises a time-domain based controller to provide closed-loop feedback control to an actuator for moving the read/write head, the controller including a state observer. The controller is configured to measure read head position information of the read/write head on the disk; provide the measured read head position information to the state observer which produces feedback variables for feedback control of the read/write head, the feedback variables being weighted by feedback gains which have been determined a prior; and apply the weighted feedback variables to provide the closed-loop feedback control to the actuator for moving the read/write head.

  • Patent number: 7511922
Abstract: A medium-opposed surface of a slider body is opposed to a recording medium. A rail is defined on the medium-opposed surface. A groove is defined on the medium-opposed surface between the trailing end of the rail and the trailing end of the medium-opposed surface. A lubricating agent is forced to flow into the groove based on the meniscus effect. Airflow acting on the medium-opposed surface serves to lead the lubricating agent along the groove to the edge of the medium-opposed surface. The lubricating agent is then blown over from the end of the groove at the edge of the medium-opposed surface. The lubricating agent is in this manner prevented from staying between the trailing end of the rail and the trailing end of the medium-opposed surface. The head slider is thus allowed to keep flying in a stable flying attitude.

  • Patent number: 7511931
Abstract: A transistor for use in an output stage is selectively part of one of two different circuits, one circuit being an electrostatic discharge (ESD) clamp circuit, the other circuit being an output stage circuit. For example, the transistor can be selectively connected such that it is part of the ESD clamp circuit, e.g., when a load (e.g., laser diode) connected to a current path terminal (e.g., drain or collector) of the transistor is not to be driven by a drive circuit. However, when the load connected to the current path terminal of the transistor is to be driven by the drive circuit, the transistor can be connected such that it receives a drive signal at its control terminal, from the drive circuit.
