Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide devices and methods for measuring fluid volume. Devices according to some embodiments include a chamber, having a pair of gears rotatably mounted therewithin. Fluid flow through the chamber causes rotation of the gears, such that each rotation and/or partial rotation results in a known volume of the fluid passing through the chamber. An optical sensor positioned outside of the chamber, can view the rotating gears through a substantially transparent chamber wall. The optical sensor can view an optical characteristic of one or both of the gears, and based upon this data, fluid volume, flow rate, and/or flow direction can be determined. Devices and methods disclosed herein can provide for improved precision in fluid flow meter measurement. In addition, the devices and methods used herein can be more durable and easier to fabricate than previously known positive displacement flow meters.

Abstract: There is described a temperature compensation scheme for a pressure sensitive metal diaphragm transducer. The transducer employs a Wheatstone bridge fabricated from p-type piezoresistors. The Wheatstone bridge is glassed directly onto the metal diaphragm. As the temperature of operation increases, the diaphragm exhibits a temperature variation of the Modulus of Elasticity. The Modulus of the metal diaphragm decreases with increasing temperature. Because of this, the same pressure applied to the metal diaphragm causes it to deflect further, which in turns causes increased strain applied to the bridge. Because of this effect, the sensitivity of the transducer increases with increasing temperature. A resistor is now placed in series with the Wheatstone bridge. The resistor is in series with the biasing voltage and because the TCS of the diaphragm is of an opposite sign, the series resistor has an even higher TCR in series with the bridge.

Abstract: A sample probe includes a sample probe tip filter. The sample probe also includes a shield disposed in relation to the sample probe tip filter, the shield being operable to deflect particles in a gas sampling stream away from the sample probe tip filter. The shield has at least one opening that allows the gas within the gas sampling stream and certain ones of the particles in the gas sampling stream both traveling in a substantially flow reversal direction to a primary direction of the gas sampling stream to enter the shield and contact the sample probe tip filter.

Abstract: An improved pipette tip (100) including an elongate body stretching between a proximal end (116) and a distal end (114). The body (112) is typically made from a plurality of layers (e.g. 130, 132, 134, 136, 138) configured and arranged to provide a fluid path extending from the distal end toward the proximal end. The improved pipette tip (100) includes a sensor component disposed to electrically interrogate fluid flowing along the fluid path. An operable sensor component includes an electrode (e.g. 154, 192) that is disposed in the fluid path to contact fluid therein. A pipette tip (100) may be embodied to: count particles, verify sample integrity (e.g. freedom from bubbles), monitor sample flow rate, and confirm an inspired volume, among other uses.

Abstract: The invention concerns a gear unit (1) having a drive element (10) with a first tooth structure (11), an output element (20) with a second tooth structure (21), wherein the tooth structures (11, 21) are able to be brought into engagement cogging with each other to form a gearing in at least one engagement area (X) of the second tooth structure (21), and wherein the output element (20) has at least one uncoupling area (Y), in which the cogging engagement of the gearing is uncoupled. The invention provides that the first tooth structure (11) has at least one first modified tooth element (11a) and the second tooth structure (21) has at least one second modified tooth element (21a), wherein by a movement of the drive element (10), synchronization of the second modified tooth element (21a) with the first modified tooth element (11a) is possible in order to create a change from the uncoupled state to the engagement state.

Abstract: A drive train, which has an internal combustion engine with a crankshaft and a parallel shift transmission with two part drive trains, which each have one transmission input shaft. One shaft is formed as a hollow shaft around the other shaft, and a dual clutch, which is received rotatably on the hollow shaft, is connected to the crankshaft and has two friction clutches and two clutch plates each assigned to one clutch and are each connected to one transmission input shaft. Each clutch plate has a torsional vibration damper with a working range which is smaller than a maximum torque of the engine. A build-up of a combined vibration which has an axial vibration of the dual clutch and a rotational vibration of the drive train during an overlap shift operation is prevented by the design of the torsional vibration dampers for a smaller torque.

Abstract: A mechanism with an inner race, which has cams, an outer race and rollers between the cams and the outer race. The inner race has a first notch while the outer race has a second notch with a narrow portion and a wider portion. A member is disposed in the first and second notches. Positioning of the member in the first notch and the narrow portion of the second notch inhibits relative rotation between the inner and outer races and power is not transmitted between the outer race and a power transmitting member, such as a gear. Positioning of the member in the first notch and the wider portion of the second notch permits some relative rotation between the inner and outer races to cause the cams to urge the rollers outwardly so that the outer race frictionally engages the power transmitting member to facilitate transmission of rotary power therebetween.
