Publication number: 20130032743Abstract: Embodiments relate to valves comprising a member such as a plate or poppet, that is moveable relative to a stationary seat. The state of the member may be maintained against opposing forces with relatively little expenditure of energy. According to one embodiment, a poppet displaced from seating in the valve seat, may be held in position against opposing forces tending to close the valve, until a desired flow of gas through the valve has taken place. The poppet may then be released as desired, such that those opposing forces serve to passively close the valve. The valve may be secured in position utilizing mechanical, magnetic, electromagnetic, pneumatic, electrostatic, or hydraulic approaches. Valve embodiments may be particularly suited to controlling gas flows for compression and/or expansion in an energy storage system.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: LightSail Energy Inc.Inventors: Danielle A. Publication number: 20130032745Abstract: In a face sealing annular valve, an annular valve member is retained around or within a guide. The annular valve member is configured so that, when the annular valve member and the annular valve seat are coaxial, the spacing between the guide means and the guide-engaging surface region increases with distance along the central axis from a minimum of spacing between the annular valve member and the guide means. An end stop limits the tilt of the annular valve member. Advantageously, the annular valve member has restricted radial movement, enabling a good seal to be formed, while being unable to simultaneously contact diametrically opposite sides of the guide and jam.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2011Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: MITSUBISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES, LTD.Inventors: Uwe Stein, Jens Eilers, Fergus McIntyre, Gordon Voller

Publication number: 20130032761Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a catalytic gasification of coal. Catalytic gasification of a Wyodak low-sulfur sub-bituminous coal from the Powder River Basin of Wyoming was investigated using an inexpensive sodium carbonate catalyst applied via incipient wetness impregnation. Experiments in an atmospheric pressure fixed-bed laboratory gasifier were performed to evaluate the effects of reaction temperature, feed gas steam content, and Na2CO3 loading on the catalytic gasification of the Wyodak coal. The temperature range investigated (700-900° C.) was selected with consideration of the Na2CO3 melting point (850° C.) to reduce the loss by volatilization of sodium. Sodium was found to be active during both pyrolysis and gasification steps. The catalyst was most cost-effective at addition levels of approximately 3 wt %. The random pore model provided a good fit to the conversion versus time data collected under both the catalytic and the uncatalytic conditions.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: UNIVERSITY OF WYOMINGInventors: Maohong Fan, Morris Argyle Provo, Tiberiu Popa

Publication number: 20130032783Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for forming a non-planar germanium quantum well structure. In particular, the quantum well structure can be implemented with group IV or III-V semiconductor materials and includes a germanium fin structure. In one example case, a non-planar quantum well device is provided, which includes a quantum well structure having a substrate (e.g. SiGe or GaAs buffer on silicon), a IV or III-V material barrier layer (e.g., SiGe or GaAs or AlGaAs), a doping layer (e.g., delta/modulation doped), and an undoped germanium quantum well layer. An undoped germanium fin structure is formed in the quantum well structure, and a top barrier layer deposited over the fin structure. A gate metal can be deposited across the fin structure. Drain/source regions can be formed at respective ends of the fin structure.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 9, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Inventors: Ravi Pillarisetty, Jack T. Publication number: 20130032784Abstract: A thin film transistor having a channel region including a nanoconductor layer. The nanoconductor layer can be a dispersed monolayer of nanotubes or nanowires formed of carbon. The thin film transistor generally includes a gate terminal insulated by a dielectric layer. The nanoconductor layer is placed on the dielectric layer and a layer of semiconductor material is developed over the nanoconductor layer to form the channel region of the thin film transistor. A drain terminal and a source terminal are then formed on the semiconductor layer. At low field effect levels, the operation of the thin film transistor is dominated by the semiconductor layer, which provides good leakage current performance. At high field effect levels, the charge transfer characteristics of the channel region are enhanced by the nanoconductor layer such that the effective mobility of the thin film transistor is enhanced.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: Ignis Innovation Inc.Inventors: Gholamreza Chaji, Maryam Moradi
