Abstract: The present subject matter provides an adhesive article having a release agent or liner that is free of silicon-containing and fluorine-containing material, and related methods of adhering a backing material of the adhesive article to a substrate. The adhesive article utilizes an amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer that facilitates removal of an optional release liner from an adhesive layer. Upon removal of the release liner, the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer remains disposed on the adhesive layer. A method of adhering the backing material to a substrate includes dissolving the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer and disposing the backing material to a substrate. During dissolution of the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer, a weak, temporary bond is formed between the substrate and the backing material. When the amorphous polyvinyl alcohol layer substantially dissolves and dries, the adhesive layer is exposed and forms a permanent bond with the substrate.

Abstract: This disclosure relates to methods that include depositing a first component and a second component to form a film including a plurality of nanostructures, and coating the nanostructures with a hydrophobic layer to render the film superhydrophobic. The first component and the second component can be immiscible and phase-separated during the depositing step. The first component and the second component can be independently selected from the group consisting of a metal oxide, a metal nitride, a metal oxynitride, a metal, and combinations thereof. The films can have a thickness greater than or equal to 5 nm; an average surface roughness (Ra) of from 90 to 120 nm, as measured on a 5 ?m×5 ?m area; a surface area of at least 20 m2/g; a contact angle with a drop of water of at least 120 degrees; and can maintain the contact angle when exposed to harsh conditions.

Abstract: A fouling and stiction-resistant coating suitable for use with marine streamers is made from a silicone undercoat layer and a powdery topcoat layer. The powdery topcoat layer is preferably a non-toxic fluoropolymer which has a low surface energy, a high modulus, and which is not continuous. There may also be a primer layer below the silicone undercoat layer. The powdery topcoat layer is preferably arranged to be penetrable by the feet of barnacles that come into contact with it, with the silicone undercoat layer arranged such that the barnacles' feet that penetrate the powdery topcoat layer bond with the silicone undercoat layer. The powdery topcoat layer is preferably further arranged to peel away from the silicone undercoat layer when force is applied to the barnacles to remove them from the coating.

Abstract: Provided is a method of producing “a ceramic green bonded compact in which a ceramic green film is bonded on each bonding surface of a ceramic green substrate having hole portions,” the method imparting good adhesiveness to a thin green film while suppressing the green substrate from having deformation. In this method, first, a layer of a paste for bonding is formed on each bonding surface of green sheets prepared. Next, each bonding surface of the green sheets on which the paste layer is formed is brought into contact, in a state in which the paste layer is wet, with each bonding surface of a porous ceramic green substrate prepared. While this state is maintained, pores in the green substrate absorb a dispersion medium in the paste layer in the wet state. As a result, the paste layer is dried, thereby completely bonding the green substrate and the green sheets.

Abstract: Methods of shaping a glass sheet each include a step of removing a first portion of the glass sheet to form a first beveled surface. The methods further include the step of removing a second portion of the glass sheet to form a second beveled surface. The methods still further include the step of removing a third portion of the glass sheet comprising a remainder of an end surface of an edge portion of the glass sheet. In further examples, glass sheets are also provided with a first bevel surface intersecting a first glass-sheet surface and an apex surface, and a second bevel surface intersecting a second glass-sheet surface and the apex surface. The glass sheet exhibits a probability of failure of less than 5% at an edge stress of 135 MPa.

Abstract: Provided are novel methods of fabricating block copolymer thin film structures that allow control over both the lateral structure and vertical orientation of the thin films. In some embodiments, the methods involve directing the assembly of a block copolymer thin film between a chemically patterned surface and a second surface such that the thin film includes domains that are oriented perpendicularly through the thickness of the thin film. In certain embodiments, the second surface can be preferential at least one block of the block copolymer. In certain embodiments, the second surface can be a homopolymer. Also provided are thin film block copolymer structures having perpendicular orientations through the thickness of the thin films. The methods and structures may include block copolymers having large interaction parameters (?'s) and small domain sizes.
