  • Publication number: 20140373844
Abstract: A system and method are configured to utilize patient effort to increase cough flow of a subject by limiting airway collapse by causing a series of exsufflation events over an individual exhalation of the subject. A single exhalation of the subject is segmented into a series of exsufflation events by a processor configured to toggle a pressure regulator between a first airway closed mode and a second airway open mode. The processor is configured such that the transitions between the closed and open modes are initiated based on predetermined timing or based on output signals generated by sensors monitoring one or more gas parameters (for example, pressure) in the airway of the patient.

  • Publication number: 20140373845
Abstract: This disclosure describes systems and methods for providing optimized adjustment of a ventilator based on an estimated net value of patient effort. The disclosure describes a novel breath type that delivers a target airway pressure calculated based on an estimated patient muscle effort. A net value of patient muscle effort is estimated using a parameter estimate vector update equation to solve for a recursive least squares gain value representing the estimated net value of patient effort. The estimated net value of patient muscle effort is used to determine a target airway pressure, which is then used to determine a target inspiratory pressure to be delivered to a patient. The target inspiratory pressure is used to determine an onset and/or end of a ventilation cycle and therefore improves the synchronization between the ventilator and the patient.

Abstract: A docking system includes basket and wall conduit systems. The basket conduit system includes a conduit and first and second nozzles mounted to opposite ends of the conduit. The second nozzle has a first funnel shape with a first circumference that decreases from an open end of the second nozzle towards the conduit. The wall conduit system includes front and back housings, a sliding plate, and a third nozzle. A sliding aperture is formed through a front plate of the front housing. A nozzle aperture is formed through a back plate of the back housing. The sliding plate slides within a space formed by the front housing and the back housing. The third nozzle is sized and shaped to slide within the sliding aperture and includes a generally cylindrical shape and a second funnel shape with a second circumference that decreases from the sliding plate towards the generally cylindrical shape.

Abstract: A substrate processing apparatus configured to rotate a substrate, such as a wafer, is disclosed. The substrate processing apparatus includes: a substrate holder configured to hold and rotate a substrate; a natural frequency calculator configured to determine a natural frequency of the substrate; and a processing controller configured to control a rotational speed of the substrate based on the natural frequency of the substrate. The processing controller is configured to control the rotational speed of the substrate such that the substrate is rotated at a rotational speed that is different from a rotational speed corresponding to the natural frequency of the substrate.

Abstract: A contraction structure of center post of self-opening umbrella includes an outer tube and an intermediate tube telescopically fit to each other. The intermediate tube has an upper end to which an outer tube plug is mounted. The center post receives therein two sections of runner cord. The two sections of runner cord each have an end fixed to the outer tube plug and an opposite end extending around a runner cord pulley mounted to an upper end of the center post and fixed to a runner at a first runner-cord fixed position. The present invention applies two sections of runner cord to simultaneously operate so that in withdrawing the runner, two identical pulling forces are applied to the runner to enable smooth withdrawal of the runner. The present invention reduces the number of pulleys used, simplifies the structure, and improves the liability of the umbrella and extends lifespan.

Abstract: A cane tip is provided for use with a cane or other walking assistive device. The cane tip includes a core for receiving a portion of the walking device. A plurality of helix shaped ribs extend from the core and form a pentagonal shaped perimeter. A softer material may be bonded to the ribs to provide a tread for gripping surfaces of the cane tip. The upper and lower members include a generally inner concave portion that is above the tread or bottom of the ribs. The concave portion and ribs provide cushioning while a user provides a down force to the cane tip during a standard use thereof. The cane tip also provides for self-supporting of the cane tip on generally level surfaces, as well as maintaining continual contact with the surface of the ground throughout the user's gait, unlike existing cane tips.

Abstract: A method for forming a thermoelectric element for use in a thermoelectric device comprises providing a mask adjacent to a substrate, the mask comprising a polymeric mixture, and bringing a template having a first pattern in contact with the mask to define a second pattern in the mask. The first pattern comprises one of holes and rods, and the second pattern comprises the other of holes and rods. Holes or rods of the second pattern expose portions of the substrate. Next, an etching layer is deposited adjacent to exposed portions of the substrate. The etching layer is configured to aid in etching the substrate. The substrate is subsequently etched with the aid of the etching layer.
