  • Publication number: 20160356653
Abstract: There are many industrial applications in which non-contact temperature sensing is useful for increasing production speed and quality, such as printing, laminating, extrusion, and metal forming. Disclosed is a non-contact temperature determining apparatus which uses two wide wavelength bands integrating sensors to determine the radiance ratio of a target and thereby determine a corresponding temperature of the target. Also disclosed is a non-contact temperature determining apparatus in which a beam splitter passes one wide wavelength band to a sensor and reflects another distinct wide wavelength band to another sensor from which temperature can be determined. A disclosed embodiment of the dual waveband temperature detector improves upon traditional and currently available ratio pyrometers by further reducing the cost of the system, making installation and use easier, and improving temperature detection for low temperature industrial applications.

Abstract: A yield stress measurement device and corresponding methods may use a two-capillary tube setup that measures the amount of a fluid drawn into each capillary and correlates that to the yield stress of the fluid. The devices and corresponding methods may be particularly useful for in-the-field measurements at well sites during drilling operations or other wellbore operations. An exemplary yield stress measurement apparatus may include a first capillary tube and a second capillary tube substantially perpendicular to each other, each capillary tube having two open ends and a length extending therebetween; a first and second length scale coupled to the lengths of the first and second capillary tubes, respectively; and a first fluid area and a second fluid area at one of the open ends of each of the first and second capillary tubes, respectively.

Abstract: An apparatus including an electromagnetic radiation source that emits electromagnetic radiation, a sample chamber comprising a fluid sample inlet for introducing a solids-laden fluid sample therein, and a detector that receives a backscattering signal and generates an output signal corresponding to a concentration of solids in the solids-laden fluid sample. The electromagnetic radiation transmits through the sample chamber and optically interacts with the solids-laden fluid sample to generate a backscattering signal. The sample chamber may include one or more of a shear bob for applying a shear rate to the solids-laden fluid sample, the shear bob suspended in the sample chamber and rotatable about an axis, a sealable fluid pressurizing inlet for pressurizing the sample chamber and a pressure gauge for measuring the pressure in the sample chamber when pressurized, and/or a temperature source for heating the solids-laden fluid sample.

Abstract: A diagnostic module for diagnosing a particulate matter sensor in a vehicle includes a sensor mode selection module, a heater power detector, and a protection tube diagnostic module. The sensor mode selection module selects a regeneration mode for the particulate matter sensor from among a plurality of operation modes. The regeneration mode regenerates the particulate matter sensor. The heater power detector determines a voltage output based on a voltage applied to the particulate matter sensor. The voltage output corresponds to operation of the particulate matter sensor in the selected mode. The protection tube diagnostic module performs a diagnostic of the particulate matter sensor. The protection tube diagnostic module selectively diagnoses a fault in the particulate matter sensor based on the voltage output determined during the regeneration mode and a regeneration power threshold.

Abstract: An apparatus for measuring volumes of two or more immiscible fluids, a lighter fluid and a heavier fluid, in a core sample includes a fluid separator and two volume pressure actuators. The lighter fluid accumulates in an upper portion of the fluid separator and the heavier fluid accumulates in a lower portion of the fluid separator, with a meniscus forming between the lighter fluid and the heavier fluid. The first and second volume pressure actuators have fluid volume encoders that determine a net volumetric flow of the fluids to and from the fluid separator. The first and second volume pressure actuators also collectively maintain constant back pressure on the fluid separator and maintain the meniscus between the two immiscible fluids in the fluid separator at a constant position.

Abstract: Devices for detecting particle sizes and distributions using focused light scattering techniques, by passing a sample through a focused beam of light, are disclosed. In one embodiment, the devices include one or more lasers, whose light is focused into a narrow beam and into a flow cell, and dispersions are passed through the flow cell using hydrodynamic sample injection. In another embodiment, a plurality of lasers is used, optionally with hydrodynamic sample injection. Particles pass through and scatter the light. The scattered light is then detected using scatter and extinction detectors, and, optionally, fluorescence detectors, and the number and size of the particles is determined. Particles in the size range of 0.1 to 10 ?m can be measured. Using the device, significantly smaller particles can be detected than if techniques such as EQELS, flow cytometry, and other conventional devices for measuring biological particles.
