Abstract: In a method of eddy current testing via an eddy current testing instrument, in response to the eddy current test instrument experiencing acceleration, the eddy current test instrument outputs an alternating magnetic field which induces eddy currents in a specimen and detects the induced eddy currents. When the eddy current test instrument is not experiencing acceleration, after a delay, the eddy current test instrument withholds outputting the alternating magnetic field to, thereby, conserve power.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for analyzing mixture components, comprising: (1) separating a mixture sample by using chromatographic technology, to obtain a preliminary chromatogram; (2) sampling as required any one interval in the preliminary chromatogram obtained in step (1), to obtain a series of spectrograms in different retention times, which are referred to as compound spectrograms; (3) performing calculation, by using a series of methods of an entropy minimum algorithm, in the mixture spectrograms obtained in step (2), to obtain each reconstructed pure spectrum and a corresponding pseudo concentration thereof. The method combines the chromatographic technology and the entropy minimum algorithm, and overcomes dependence on component separation in an existing analysis method, making separation not important any more. There is no need to completely separate each component in the mixture. Meanwhile, a prerequisite for using the entropy minimum algorithm is met.

A nanopore is formed through the membrane having electrode layers separated by insulating layers. A certain electrode layer has a first type of organic coating and a pair of electrode layers has a second type. The first type of organic coating forms a motion control transient bond to a molecule in the nanopore for motion control, and the second type forms first and second transient bonds to different bonding sites of a base of the molecule. When a voltage is applied to the pair of electrode layers a tunneling current is generated by the base in the nanopore, and the tunneling current travels via the first and second transient bonds formed to be measured as a current signature for distinguishing the base. The motion control transient bond is stronger than first and second transient bonds.

Abstract: A device for determining presence or absence of infection due to an infectious agent is described. The device comprises a sample receiving zone configured to receive a liquid sample from a subject suspected of having an infection due to an infectious agent, the sample receiving zone positioned to distribute the sample along a first fluid flow path to a first label zone and along a second fluid flow path to a second label zone. Test lines in each fluid flow path capture a mobile detectable species as an indicator of presence or absence of the infectious agent. The device also comprises a reference line positioned in the one of the fluid flow paths. The bidirectional fluid flow paths emanate from a common sample zone and provide an efficient approach to detection and differentiate two species as indicators of the same infectious agent or as indicators of two different infectious agents.

Abstract: Methods of electrochemically detecting or quantifying an analyte by coupling a plurality of redox-active agents (e.g., guanine-rich oligonucleotides) to the analyte are disclosed. More particularly, this application discloses affinity-based methods for isolating one or more analytes from a sample and subsequently detecting or determining the concentration of the one or more analytes. Detecting or determining the concentration of one or more analytes may involve measuring the extent of oxidation of guanine nucleobases that have been or are coupled to the analyte.

Abstract: Methods of determining whether a circulating tumor cell (CTC) marker, e.g., a CTC or fragment thereof, is present in a sample, such as a blood sample, are provided. Aspects of the methods include flow cytometrically assaying a fluorescently labeled sample that has been fluorescently labeled with a fluorescently labeled chlorotoxin binding member to determine whether a CTC marker is present in the sample. Also provided are compositions for practicing the methods. The methods and compositions find use in a variety of applications.

Abstract: A method for assessing sarcoma metastasis comprising obtaining a biological sample of the subject, detecting a level of a N-terminal segment of moesin in the biological sample, wherein the level of the N-terminal segment of moesin detected in the biological sample of the subject is indicative of the subject developing or with an increased probability of developing metastasis of sarcoma. The present application also provides a biomarker and a kit for assessing metastasis of sarcoma, and uses of such biomarker. The present application also provides a method of treating sarcoma metastasis.

Abstract: Methods of diagnosis and/or prognosis of malignant disease from pleural effusion samples are disclosed. The methods typically include determining the normalized intensity of one or more biomarkers, such as acetone and 3-hydroxybutyate, in pleural effusion samples using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), such as proton NMR (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Reference values for malignant disease diagnosis using the disclosed biomarkers are provided. Reference values for prognosis of median survival time based on the disclosed biomarkers are also provided.

Abstract: A method of detecting peroxynitrite in a sample is described comprising the steps of: (a) providing a complex of a saccharide with an aryl boronate compound of formula (I): Fp-L1-Z-L2-Ar—B(OH)2 (I) wherein: Fp comprises a fluorophore; L1 and L2 are linker groups; Z is a fluorescence switch; and Ar is optionally substituted aryl; (b) contacting said aryl boronate-saccharide complex with said sample, whereby peroxynitrite in said sample cleaves said aryl boronate-saccharide complex to produce a compound of formula (II): F-L1-Z-L2-Ar—OH (II); and (c) detecting a decrease in a fluorescence intensity of said fluorophore resulting from said cleavage reaction in step (b). Peroxynitrite reacts quantitatively, rapidly, and selectively in step (b) of the reaction, whereby medical conditions associated with elevated peroxynitrite can be diagnosed. Also provided are compounds of formula (I) for use in the methods.
