Abstract: In some examples, an optical density of a contaminant in a fluid sample is computed. An optical density of a target fluid in the fluid sample is computed using optical densities of the fluid sample at a plurality of wavelengths. Abstract: There are provided a control device of an image reading apparatus, an operation method and an operation program thereof, and an image detection system capable of quickly and easily outputting an image having an appropriate density for analysis from an image reading apparatus. An image receiving unit receives a pre-image output in pre-scanning performed before main scanning for outputting a main image for analysis in an image reading apparatus. A region information receiving unit receives information of a region in the pre-image designated by a user. A calculation unit calculates an appropriate voltage value that is a voltage value of the photomultiplier at which a density of the region becomes an appropriate density for analysis. A scanning conditions setting unit sets the appropriate voltage value as temporary scanning conditions of main scanning.

Abstract: An analytical system and method periodically monitoring an injection water distribution pipeline for the presence and concentration of formaldehyde or other aldehyde-functional biocide includes pumps, one of which provides a predetermined volume of injection water drawn from the pipeline at a sampling point and the other a predetermined volume of a reagent, preferably a buffered solution of dimedone, from a reagent storage vessel which are mixed and then heated in a chamber to a predetermined temperature to promote formation of any reaction products. The heated reaction mixture is passed to a detection cell and exposed to light of predetermined wavelength which, in accordance with the Hantzsch reaction, molecules having an aldehyde functional group that reacted with dimedone produce a fluorescence-emitting reaction product, the intensity of which is measured and compared to data previously obtained from standard aldehyde-containing solutions.

Abstract: Embodiments of the disclosure are directed at determining rotor deterioration in a dynamoelectric machine. Various current and voltage measurements are carried out upon an exciter assembly when the dynamoelectric machine is operated at various speeds and at various occasions over an extended period of time. More particularly, a set of current and voltage measurements that are carried out when the dynamoelectric machine is in a slow-roll mode of operation can be used for determining a resistance of a current path through which the exciter assembly provides electrical power to a rotor assembly. A time-domain-to-frequency-domain conversion can be carried out upon this set of resistance measurements in order to generate a spectral signature. The spectral signature can then be evaluated to detect an altered rotor resistance condition and/or a rotor resistance alteration trend.

Abstract: Ultrasonic transmitting elements in an electroacoustical transceiver transmit acoustic energy to an electroacoustical transponder, which includes ultrasonic receiving elements to convert the acoustic energy into electrical power for the purposes of powering one or more sensors that are electrically coupled to the electroacoustical transponder. The electroacoustical transponder transmits data collected by the sensor(s) back to the electroacoustical transceiver wirelessly, such as through impedance modulation or electromagnetic waves. A feedback control loop can be used to adjust system parameters so that the electroacoustical transponder operates at an impedance minimum. An implementation of the system can be used to collect data in a vehicle, such as the tire air pressure. Another implementation of the system can be used to collect data in remote locations, such as in pipes, enclosures, in wells, or in bodies of water.

Abstract: An Oblique Backscatter Ultrasound imaging system includes a transceiver that has an US source and a plurality of US detectors configured in receive signals off axis from the US source. While the system is arranged in a reflective configuration, the device produces transmissive contrast signals to yield improved images. The transceiver can be mounted to a movable stage or robotic arm to enable it to scan the surface of a target. Alternatively, scanning can be performed by 1D or 2D phased-array transmission or detection.

Abstract: According to an embodiment, a structure evaluation system includes a plurality of AE sensors, a signal processor, a position locator, and an evaluator. The AE sensors detect an elastic wave generated from a structure. The signal processor performs signal processing on the elastic wave detected by the AE sensors and outputs an AE signal including information on the elastic wave. The position locator derives a source distribution indicating the distribution of sources of the elastic wave generated in the structure, using an AE signal caused by an impact on the structure. The evaluator evaluates a state of deterioration of a predetermined region of the structure from a density of the sources of the elastic wave obtained on the basis of the source distribution.

Abstract: A micro gas chromatograph includes one or more separator columns formed within a device layer. The separator columns have small channel cross sections and long channel lengths with atomic-smooth channel sidewalls enabling a high channel packaging density, multiple channels positioned on top of each other, and channel segments that are thermally decoupled from the substrates. The micro gas-chromatograph also enables electrostatic and thermal actuators to be positioned in close proximity to the separator columns such that the material passing through the columns is one or more of locally heated, locally cooled, and electrically biased.

Abstract: A thermal conductivity sensing device (1) is disclosed, along with a method for operation of the thermal conductivity sensing device and use of the thermal conductivity sensing device in a system for gas chromatography and a method of carrying out gas chromatography. The thermal conductivity sensing device is for use in sensing one or more gaseous components in a flowing gaseous environment. The device has a first sensor (4B) and a second sensor (4A) for exposure to the same flowing gaseous environment (G). The first sensor has an associated flow altering means (20) to affect gas flow at least at part of the surface of the first sensor, to be different to gas flow at the surface of the second sensor. Each sensor provides an output relating to heat transfer between a surface of the sensor and the gaseous environment. The device is operable to compare outputs of the first and second sensors. The sensor is able to reduce the effects of bulk convection of the flowing gas on thermal conductivity measurements.
