Publication number: 20190017904Abstract: A probe includes a solid elongate body disposed along a long axis of the probe and terminating in a probe tip, and a solid planar beveled surface at or adjacent an end of the probe tip formed at a non-zero beveled angle relative to a normal of the long axis of the probe, The solid planar beveled surface is configured to impart Van der Waal attractive force to a sample surface positioned immediately adjacent the solid beveled surface of the probe so that the sample can be detached from and lifted from the bulk material and transported to a grid for investigation. Various embodiments of the beveled surface are described, including an elliptical probe tip surface beveled between 10 and 45 degrees to the normal to the probe long axis and planar surfaces formed in the sides of the probe body that are parallel to the probe long axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventor: Lucille A. Publication number: 20190017905Abstract: Disclosed are methods, systems, and devices for detecting biological analytes in a sample. The disclosed technology can be used to obtain readings of analyte concentration in a sample by imaging scattered light from an angled narrow beam illuminator. A fluid sample containing one or more biological, organic, and inorganic analytes including proteins, viruses, bacteria, phages, toxins, peptides, DNA, RNA, hormones, chemicals, drugs, and isotopes can be transferred to a microfluidic device having one or more channels with dimensions to generate capillary action for sample transport. The geometry of the microfluidic device may include a reservoir and sensing area, wherein an immunometric reaction can take place for the narrow beam scanning. The test particle may be coated with a specific binding member that is used to bind the binding pair member on an analyte in a sample. Test particles form the binding and the particle/analyte conjugate may be scanned.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2016Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventors: TsungFeng Wu, Yu-Chen Chen

Publication number: 20190017906Abstract: Systems and methods for preparing a cytological specimen from a patient sample in a sample container include or employ mechanisms for quickly and accurately adjusting the pressure in a pressure unit during the specimen preparation. The systems include a specimen transfer device configured for being positioned within the sample container, a pressure tank coupled to the specimen transfer device and configured for applying at least one of positive pressure and vacuum pressure through the specimen transfer device, and a temperature adjusting unit coupled to the pressure tank, and configured for incrementally adjusting the pressure in the pressure tank by heating or cooling the tank. The method includes steps of performing a coarse pressure adjustment using a supply valve and/or a bleed valve coupled to the pressure tank, and, after the coarse adjustment, performing a fine pressure adjustment using a temperature adjusting element coupled to the pressure tank.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2017Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventor: Barry F. Publication number: 20190017910Abstract: An apparatus and methods for testing components under force is described herein. The apparatus comprises cap bolts that may be tightened to exert a measurable, constant force upon a lever arm that rotates about a fulcrum. The lever arm pushes down upon a push rod, to exert a force upon a test piece in an insertion well, which may be filled with fluid. The fulcrum may be positioned, such that the force from the cap bolt gives a magnifying, or a diluting force, upon the push rod.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2017Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventor: Mark A.
