Publication number: 20190017912Abstract: A dynamic mechanical analysis system provides an actuator that imparts expansion and contraction forces (e.g. shear force) to a viscoelastic material at high frequencies. Such high frequency analysis allows for the direct and accurate measurement of the characteristics of the material at high expansion/contraction frequencies directly, without the use of additional predictive analysis techniques, such as time-temperature superposition. The system also utilizes a clamping system, whereby two different sections of the viscoelastic material are held in place between by a pair of fixed clamps and a force member that is moved by the actuator. As such, the system is able to subject the viscoelastic material sample to simulated “road” conditions to identify various performance properties associated with the material sample.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 17, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Applicant: The University of AkronInventors: Siamak Farhad, Roja Esmaeeli

Publication number: 20190017913Abstract: For measuring rheological properties of a liquid sample, the sample is attached to two sample attachment surfaces opposing each other in a pulling direction. The sample attachment surfaces and the liquid sample attached thereto are arranged in a field of view of a light microscope and imaged onto an electronic camera by means of an objective lens of the light microscope. One of the two sample attachment surfaces is pulled away from the other one in the pulling direction, while a plurality of images of the sample attachment surfaces and the sample attached thereto are registered with the camera. For different distances of the two sample attachment surfaces, both a diameter of the liquid sample in a middle between the two sample attachment surfaces and the respective distances of the two sample attachment surfaces are determined from the images registered with the electronic camera during the step of pulling.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventors: Oliver Kress, Marcin Makowski, Tanya Ostapenko

Publication number: 20190017914Abstract: This invention provides methods and devices to measure particle suspension concentrations in the presence of potential interferents. Particle back-scatter readings are taken at light wavelengths that are absorbed by the medium before interacting with surrounding objects. Source-detector spacings are minimized compared to the mean absorbance path length of light, thereby maximizing the range of sensitivity to particle concentration. Discrimination against potentially interfering particles, such as bubbles, is provided by mapping the signal distribution against the central signal value and/or by the use of statistical measures with reduced dependence on outliers. The methods and devices allow accurate particle concentration readings over a wide range of concentration in environments crowded with potentially interfering objects and in the presence of variable concentrations and sizes of potentially interfering particles.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 24, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventors: Martin P. Publication number: 20190017942Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for producing an x-ray image of a sample using a lamella-shaped target to improve the usual tradeoff between imaging resolution and image acquisition time. A beam of electrons impacts the lamella-shaped target normal to the narrower dimension of the lamella which then determines the virtual source size along that axis. For low-energy x-ray generation, the small electron penetration depth parallel to the wider dimension of the lamella determines the virtual source size along that axis. Conductive cooling of the target is improved over post targets with the same imaging resolution. The lamella-shaped target is long enough to ensure that the electron beam does not impact the support structure which would degrade the imaging resolution. Target materials may be selected from the same metals used for bulk or post targets, including tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, scandium, vanadium, silver, or a refractory metal.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Applicant: FEI CompanyInventor: Jorge Filevich

Publication number: 20190017956Abstract: The present invention relates to disposable test sensors having improved sample application and measuring properties and their uses for detection, preferably, quantitative measurement, of analyte in a liquid sample like blood. In particular, the invention provides for an electrochemical biosensor which has a thin-layer fluid chamber having funnel-like shape with a novel extra wide opening as sampling entrance and a vent opening at the tip of the chamber for air escape. The thin-layer fluid chamber provides a reservoir from which a sample fluid can be drawn into it through capillary action. The extra wide sampling entrance provided by the present invention can draw blood into the chamber through any part of the opening, thus it allows easy targeting the samples with small volume, picking up smeared samples and it is more tolerant to users who jam the tip of the sensor into users' finger.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventors: Xiaohua Cai, Hongli Che, Shaobo Li

Publication number: 20190017959Abstract: Methods and apparatus relating to very large scale FET arrays for analyte measurements. ChemFET (e.g., ISFET) arrays may be fabricated using conventional CMOS processing techniques based on improved FET pixel and array designs that increase measurement sensitivity and accuracy, and at the same time facilitate significantly small pixel sizes and dense arrays. Improved array control techniques provide for rapid data acquisition from large and dense arrays. Such arrays may be employed to detect a presence and/or concentration changes of various analyte types in a wide variety of chemical and/or biological processes. In one example, chemFET arrays facilitate DNA sequencing techniques based on monitoring changes in hydrogen ion concentration (pH), changes in other analyte concentration, and/or binding events associated with chemical processes relating to DNA synthesis.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 30, 2018Publication date: January 17, 2019Inventors: Jonathan ROTHBERG, Wolfgang HINZ, Kim JOHNSON, James BUSTILLO
