Abstract: Continuous monitoring of acetone is a challenge using related art sensing methods. Though real-time detection of acetone from different biofluids is promising, signal interference from other biomarkers remains an issue. A minor fluctuation of the signals in the micro-ampere range can cause substantial overlapping in linear/polynomial calibration fittings. To address the above in non-invasive detection, principal component analysis (PCA) can be used to generate specific patterns for different concentration points of acetone in the subspace. This results in improvement of the problem of overlapping of the signals between two different concentration points of the data sets while eliminating dimensionality and redundancy of data variables. An algorithm following PCA can be incorporated in a microcontroller of a sensor, resulting in a functional wearable acetone sensor. Acetone in the physiological range (0.5 ppm to 4 ppm) can be detected with such a sensor.

An illustrative method of logging total thickness of the pipe walls includes acquiring measurements from an electromagnetic logging tool conveyed through the innermost bore, each measurement associated with a TRF combination (transmit antenna, receive antenna, and frequency), and further associated with a position along the bore. Multiple scale factors are applied to the measurements to determine multiple total thickness estimates for each position, each of the multiple scale factors corresponding to a subset of single-pipe defect profiles. Preferably, every possible single-pipe defect profile is included in at least one of these subsets. To detect small mutations, a protein that binds exclusively to the mutation of interest, and not to wild-type, is used. For structural alterations, binding proteins are used that flank a breakpoint of the alteration. After digestion of unbound, unprotected nucleic acid in the sample, the mutation- or breakpoint-containing segment remains as an isolated DNA fragment. The sample is then assayed to detect any fragment of DNA and the detection of the fragment indicates the presence of the mutation or breakpoint in the subject.

The first FRET chromophore and the second FRET chromophore are selected to provide an energy transfer from one to another when located within a Förster distance with respect to each other, thereby forming a FRET donor-acceptor chromophore pair. In a further aspect, a method of detecting a target analyte in a sample is provided. In yet a further aspect, packaging sheet materials and packaging articles employing the assay device under certain conditions are provided.

Abstract: The object is to provide a lysis method and lysis treatment solution for efficiently lysing cells of various Streptococcus bacteria in milk of a livestock animal to release a specific antigen substance contained in the cells for detecting whether causative bacterium of mastitis is a Streptococcus bacterium or not by using the milk, as well as a detection method using an immunochromatographic device. There is provided a method for lysing a Streptococcus bacterium, which comprises the step of mixing a lysis agent containing a lytic enzyme with milk obtained form a livestock animal to lyse a Streptococcus bacterium existing in the milk. The lytic enzyme is preferably at least one selected from the group consisting of lysozyme, labiase, and ?-N-acetylglucosaminidase.

Abstract: The present invention relates an in vitro method for detecting class II restricted CD4+ T cells in a sample. Herein a sample is contacted with an isolated complex of an MHC class II molecule and a peptide. This peptide comprises an MHC class II restricted T cell epitope of an antigenic protein and immediately adjacent thereof, or separated by a linker of at most 7 amino acids a sequence with a [CST]-xx-C or C-xx-[CST] motif. CD4+ T cells are detected by measuring the binding of the complex with cells in the sample, wherein the binding of the complex to a cell is indicative for the presence of CD4+ T cells in the sample. The present invention further relates to an isolated complex of an MHC Class II molecule and a peptide comprising an MHC class II restricted T cell epitope of an antigenic protein and immediately adjacent thereof, or separated by a linker of at most 7 amino acids a sequence with a [CST]-xx-C or C-xx-[CST] motif.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for identifying inhibitors of breast cancer metastasis based on a screening with proteins that are specific for the secretome of a chondrocyte, preferably cytokines and/or chemokines. The ligands as identified lead to a decrease of the migration and/or a re-differentiation of a breast cancer cell and/or a reduction of the number and/or size of breast cancer metastases. The present invention further relates to a method for detecting breast cancer metastasis, comprising the step of detecting at least one protein that is specific for the secretome of a chondrocyte, and for methods for treating and/or preventing breast cancer metastasis in a patient in need thereof, comprising the step of administering an effective amount of at least one ligand for one protein that is specific for the secretome of a chondrocyte to said patient in need thereof.

Abstract: Improved methods for treating lung cancer are provided. Tumor samples from patients are analyzed (i) by DNA sequencing to detect the presence of HER2 mutations and (ii) by mass spectrometric proteomic analysis to determine whether HER2 protein is expressed in the tumor cells. Patients respond to therapy with trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1) or an equivalent antibody-drug conjugate when unique HER2 protein fragments are detected in the patient's tumor cells that harbor HER2 mutations. Conversely, patients do not respond to T-DM1 therapy when the tumor cells contain HER2 mutations but the unique protein fragments are not detected. Detection of HER3 in the tumor cells is a positive predictor of response to treatment.
