The method is executed by a motion monitoring system having at least one computer and one or more sensors for sensing movement of the individual. The method involves categorizing the individual into a category of a plurality of possible categories based on a physical attribute (e.g. body mass) of the individual. The method also involves generating, for each speed metric generated based on captured sensor data, an indication of relative performance (e.g. percentile ranking) of the speed metric in relation to only other individuals who also belong to the category of the individual. By comparing the individual to only other individuals who also belong to the category of the individual, the relative performance of each speed metric can provide a solid foundation for identifying which speed metric could use improvement.
