Roll Adjustment Patents (Class 100/168)
  • Patent number: 5262101
Abstract: A plastic material, controlled at a desired temperature, is fed on an upstream side of a gap between a pair of rotating forming rolls arrayed almost in parallel and controlled at a desired temperature from a device for feeding the plastic material. The plastic material is pressed and formed into a sheet by the forming rolls therebetween while forming a bank or an accumulation of the plastic material on an upstream side of the gap of the forming rolls and is carried out on a downstream side of the gap. The bank quantity monitoring is performed by measuring a temperature of the sheet carried out through the gap of the forming rolls and estimating the quantity of the bank in accordance with measured temperature information. The sheet formation is performed by measuring a temperature of the sheet carried out through the gap of the forming rolls and controlling various forming conditions according to a measured temperature information.

  • Patent number: 5236640
Abstract: A calendar for the production of packing sheets has a heated cylinder of large diameter on which a packing sheet is progressively built-up of layers of rubber-fiber mixture during many revolutions and the cylinder and an unheated counter pressure cylinder of smaller diameter mounted in slidable bearings for rotation and for movement toward and away from the heated cylinder. As the packing sheet is progressively built-up on the heated cylinder, its thickness is continuously measured by feeler rollers pressed lightly against the surface of the packing sheet and associated inductive sensors. In a comparison circuit, the values of thickness-indicating signals received from the sensors are compared with the sum of an initial zero value recorded before rubber-fiber mixture is applied to the circumference of the heated cylinder, and a predetermined desired value. When the value of the thickness indicating signal equals the sum of the zero value and the desired value, the calender is stopped.

The connection between each sliding support and the roll frame (5) takes place via a threaded spindle (7) with a nut (8) without self-locking and also via a housing (9). The nut (8) has at its inner surface (10) a toothed arrangement (11) and the housing (5) has a further toothed arrangement (13) at its inner surface confronting the toothed end face of the nut. The nut (8) and the housing (9) can be moved relative to one another by a switching piece (14) which determines whether the toothed arrangements are meshed or disengaged. • Patent number: 5215009
Abstract: An improved calender apparatus for compressing and magnetic recording coating applied thereto, comprises a central roll (1) having a hard surface, around which the magnetic web is wrapped so that one side of the web bears against the central roll, while bearing against the other side of the web are at least three supporting rolls (2) which are distributed evenly around the central roll. With support roll can being rolls linearly displaced, the central roll can be swung out by a jointed lever and the web completely unthreaded. As a result, with two calender apparatuses arranged in series, cleaning of one apparatus is possible while production is not interrupted. The radius of the central roll is less than the radius of the supporting rolls, resulting in a higher linear pressure; in addition, the central roll may be made or mounted in such a way that it is flexible, in order to compensate in this way for unevennesses of the supporting rolls or of the coating.

Abstract: Support of a nip relieving device to compensate for overhanging weights at an elevationally displaceable bearing part of an intermediate roll of the calender is effected relative to the stand of the calender by an elevationally displaceable support member. This support member is displaceable by a threaded spindle which is rotatable with a motor and gearing and supported by the stand, to which threaded spindle the support member is individually engageable. The support member is thus individually displaceable to the related bearing part, according to the elevational position thereof, into a desired relative position. According to a preferred embodiment, the components of the nip relieving device are arranged in a bearing sleeve enclosing the threaded spindle and the support member is formed by a nut which is elevationally displaceable by rotation of the threaded spindle.

  • Patent number: 4949535
Abstract: A biasing mechanism for a roll-type conditioning apparatus having a pair of generally vertically spaced, counterrotating conditioning rolls in which the upper roll is biased toward engagement with the lower roll is disclosed wherein a torsion bar interconnects the opposing ends of the upper roll such that any movement of either end of the upper roll away from the lower roll effects a twisting of the torsion bar to increase the biasing force exerted thereby on both ends of the upper conditioning roll. The torsion bar is connected to a mounting mechanism which includes a hub assembly pivotally connected to the frame of the conditioning apparatus on a pivot arm movably mounting one end of the upper conditioning roll. The pivotal connection of the hub assembly effects a rotational movement thereof whenever the pivot arm is moved to effect a corresponding twisting of the torsion bar connected thereto.

  • Patent number: 4924772
Abstract: A calender wherein the intermediate rolls of a stack of rolls are mounted on pairs of levers pivotable on carriages which are movable up and down in vertical ways provided therefor in the frame. This renders it possible to change the levels of the intermediate rolls without any or without appreciable shifting of the centers of nips of neighboring rolls from a common vertical plane. The carriages are suspended on composite feed screws which can be rotated to move neighboring carriages nearer to or further away from each other.

  • Patent number: 4858139
Abstract: A plastic web is made by an extrusion apparatus having a plastics screw press, a metering pump with a volume flow depending on the rotation speed, an output die and a rolling unit with calendaring rolls. The flow of a thermoplastic material is regulated with the metering pump. The melt web issuing from the output die is cooled and calibrated. The process uses a metering pump which has substantially linear volume flow/rotation speed characteristics in the regulated range of rotation speeds and together with the rolling unit is part of a common computerized control system. The peripheral speed of the calendaring rolls is controlled so that it is proportional to the rotation speed of the metering pump. The special proportionality factor for the speed ratio is set by a computer which controls the roll speed so that no undesirable thickness variations or other product defects occur.
