Patent number: 5236640Abstract: A calendar for the production of packing sheets has a heated cylinder of large diameter on which a packing sheet is progressively built-up of layers of rubber-fiber mixture during many revolutions and the cylinder and an unheated counter pressure cylinder of smaller diameter mounted in slidable bearings for rotation and for movement toward and away from the heated cylinder. As the packing sheet is progressively built-up on the heated cylinder, its thickness is continuously measured by feeler rollers pressed lightly against the surface of the packing sheet and associated inductive sensors. In a comparison circuit, the values of thickness-indicating signals received from the sensors are compared with the sum of an initial zero value recorded before rubber-fiber mixture is applied to the circumference of the heated cylinder, and a predetermined desired value. When the value of the thickness indicating signal equals the sum of the zero value and the desired value, the calender is stopped.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1991Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: Paul Troester MaschinenfabrikInventors: Ralf Heiderich, Hermann Siebert

Patent number: 5022319Abstract: The apparatus for neutralizing overhanging loads is supported at the roll stand of a calender which opens in downward direction. This apparatus is arranged at both sides of a roll and, during operation, presses from below against the roll suspensions in a predetermined or required position of the roll. This force is generated or set by movable force transmitters, dimensionally deformable force transmitters or displaceable force transmitters. Upon opening the calender, a force greater than the set force acts upon the load neutralizing apparatus and the force transmitters are moved, dimensionally deformed or displaced, as the case may be, such that a displacement path of the roll into a lower lowered position is provided. The force transmitters for generating the force which compensates for the overhanging loads can be a spring assembly, an air spring or a column or head of liquid supported by a gas cushion.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1989Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Assignee: Sulzer-Escher Wyss GmbHInventor: Mario Biondetti

Patent number: 4858139Abstract: A plastic web is made by an extrusion apparatus having a plastics screw press, a metering pump with a volume flow depending on the rotation speed, an output die and a rolling unit with calendaring rolls. The flow of a thermoplastic material is regulated with the metering pump. The melt web issuing from the output die is cooled and calibrated. The process uses a metering pump which has substantially linear volume flow/rotation speed characteristics in the regulated range of rotation speeds and together with the rolling unit is part of a common computerized control system. The peripheral speed of the calendaring rolls is controlled so that it is proportional to the rotation speed of the metering pump. The special proportionality factor for the speed ratio is set by a computer which controls the roll speed so that no undesirable thickness variations or other product defects occur.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1988Date of Patent: August 15, 1989Assignee: Reifenhauser GmbH & Co. Patent number: 4826571Abstract: In a press for papermaking comprising in combination, a pair of elongated rollers arranged one to another to provide an adjustable elongated nip therebetween, each of the rollers comprising a substantially rigid elongated shaft and a substantially rigid elongated sleeve overlying and rotatably supported upon the elongated shaft, the respective shafts extending outboard of the respective sleeve to provide two pairs of parallel spaced shaft outboard portions, the improvement comprising, in the case of each roller, providing a circumferentially extending running fit between the outer surface of the shaft and the inner surface of the sleeve defining an elongated annular chamber extending lengthwise of the sleeve. Other embodiments are disclosed which include the shaft being tubular and pressurized, lubricant in the annular chamber and a cable system for urging the rollers together. A splashguard is also provided for preventing water on the surface of the rollers from rewetting the paper.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1987Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Inventor: David R. Webster

Patent number: 4803877Abstract: A pinch apparatus in which a pair of rolls, comprising rollers whose peripheral length decreases from the center portion in the axial direction towards each end disposed on the curved roller shaft rotatably, are arranged opposedly utilizing a flat part throughout the axial direction at an external periphery of the roller. The pinch apparatus feeds out a material being passed through in quantity corresponding to peripheral lengths in each part of the roller. The apparatus also includes an adjusting device which adjusts the shaft angle and roll ascending and descending portions.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1987Date of Patent: February 14, 1989Inventor: Akechi Yano

Patent number: 4802411Abstract: A bracket assembly for receiving and positionally adjusting the shaft end of a distribution roller in a printing, duplicating or like machine. A pin head structure is mounted on a framework of the machine. A triangular array of pins project inwardly of the pin head axially of the roller for receiving the shaft end of the roller in a position of engagement between the pins. At least one of the pins is adjustable generally in a radial direction to take up any radial play between the roller shaft end and the pin array. At least one of the pins includes means adjustable in an axial direction to take up any axial play between the roller shaft end and the pin head structure. At least one of the pins is retractable to allow for insertion of the roller into position between the pins. The entire pin head structure is rotatable about a given axis generally parallel to and offset from the axis of rotation of the roller to effect movement of the roller bodily in a radial direction relative to an adjacent roller.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1987Date of Patent: February 7, 1989Assignee: AM International, Inc.Inventor: Stanley Witczak

Patent number: 4796452Abstract: A setting device for adjusting the position of a roll with respect to a mating roll, as in the press section of a paper machine, or the like. A roll trunnion or journal at the end of the roll is received in a bearing which is supported in a bearing housing that is axially outward of the roll. The outer part of the bearing is in turn supported to an actuator which is shiftable to move the roll transversely of its axis with respect to the mating roll. A base plate hydraulically supports and raises the actuator for the bearing housing. A guide plate supported to the base plate extends past the roll trunnion or journal. Linear motion guide elements for guiding the motion of the bearing housing under the influence of the actuator are provided. They are guide claws on the bearing housing which wrap around the guide plate and move along it. An additional actuator piston operates on the roll trunnion or journal to move it in the opposite direction from the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Assignee: J.
