Abstract: The present invention relates to a glass composition comprising crystalline phases, and to glass flakes produced therefrom. These glass flakes can be used as base substrate for effect pigments. The glass flakes can furthermore be used in paints, coatings, printing inks, plastics and in cosmetic formulations. The glass flakes are converted into glass-ceramics, and are present in one of the following composition ranges I or II in % by weight: I: 40-50 SiO2, 10-20 B2O3, 10-20 Na2O, 15-30 TiO2; II: 10-60 SiO2, 5-30 B2O3, 5-40 TiO2, 2-20 Nb2O5, 2-20 Fe2O3, 5-40 Na2O+K2O+CaO+SrO+BaO.

Abstract: A method of applying a barrier coating to a component is provided. The method includes providing the component and preparing a slurry comprising a mixture. The mixture includes about 50-90 percent by volume fraction of a barrier coating composition, the barrier coating composition and 10-50 percent by volume fraction of a plurality of short fibers. Abstract: The present invention provides ceramic powder capable of being incorporated into rubber or a resin for the preparation of a composition, which shows excellent heat resistance and flame retardancy and which is used, for instance, as a semiconductor-sealing material. Abstract: A process of preparing a silica sol is described. The process involves reacting a fresh sol with guanidine carbonate. The reaction may be conducted in the presence of a base (e.g., sodium water glass), and at a pH of from 8 to 12. The process of the present invention may also include concentrating steps. The silica sol prepared by the method of the present invention has a BET surface area of greater than or equal to 100 m2/g, and contains from 0.05 to 15% by weight of gaunidinium ions, based on the total weight of the silica gel.

Abstract: A premixed composition is formed from modified polyacrylate polymer, silicone emulsion, one or more amine compounds, and silane, that cures rapidly to form a composition that can be used as a grout or coating. The premixed composition includes a latex resin including an acrylic-based polymer, a silicone emulsion, one or more amine compounds, and a silane, and optionally various fillers, pigments, and adjuvants. These components in the proper proportions form a stable viscous suspension that can be floated into tile joints, and cleaned from an adjacent tile surface. The composition rapidly cures to form a hard mass that is resistant to abrasion, in both dry and wet conditions, is color consistent, and is resistant to staining.
Abstract: A composition for protecting a surface of an inorganic substrate, such as concrete, terrazzo, or ceramic tile, includes a silicate (i.e., an alkali metal polysilicate or a colloidal silica), a siliconate (e.g., a metal siliconate, such as an alkali metal methyl siliconate, etc.), acrylic latex, a silane coupling agent, and a solvent, such as ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Abstract: An angle-dependent interference pigment based on transparent or translucent inorganic flake serving as a substrate is provided. The substrate is coated by coatings (A)+(B)+(C) and optionally coating (D), so as to form a “high-low-high” refractive index layered structure. The coatings (A) and (C) consist of metal oxides, silicate, aluminates and/or a mixture thereof. The coating (B) consist of silicon oxide, hydrous silicon oxide, aluminum oxide, hydrous aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, hydrous magnesium oxide and/or a mixture thereof. The angle-dependent interference pigments have high color saturation in the transitional region and a significantly gradual color change in the color changing region. Abstract: A multilayer effect pigment includes a transparent substrate, a layer of high refractive index material on the substrate, and alternating layers of low refractive index and high refractive index materials on the first layer, the total number of layers being an odd number of at least three, all adjacent layers differing in refractive index by at least about 0.2 and at least one of the layers having an optical thickness which is different from all of the other layers. The resulting multilayer effect pigment is not a quarter-wave stack. The present effect pigments may be used in cosmetic and industrial applications.
Abstract: A gold color metallic pigment with coating of manganese oxide nanoparticles and a method to produce the gold color pigment are described. The disclosed coated pigment includes a platelet shaped substrate, a passivation layer applied to the substrate with surface anchoring groups and a manganese oxide nanoparticles layer. The coated pigment further includes an encapsulation layer or a surface property modification layer. The disclosed method provides pigments that exhibit brilliant gold color and a highly desirable appearance of real gold without the environmental issues causing by heavy metals.

Abstract: To provide dense hollow particles having a thin shell, a process for simply producing the hollow particles at low cost, a coating composition for forming a coating film having a high antireflection property and an article having a coating film having a high antireflection property. Hollow particles each composed of a shell made of silicon oxide as the main component, wherein the thickness of the shell is from 0.5 to 4 nm, and in the histogram of the pore volume obtained by the nitrogen adsorption method, the maximum value of the pore volume is from 0.01 to 0.08 mL/g within the range of the pore diameter of at most 3 nm.
