  • Patent number: 4834018
Abstract: A coating device where the pressurized coating space formed between the doctor element and the material web and/or the counter roll carrying it is defined by a regulating plate on the inlet side relative to the material web. A guide device is so arranged in the coating space that coating mixture will circulate around it on all sides in one direction of rotation. The guide device generally leaves only relatively narrow flow channels open in the coating chamber so that harmful turbulent flows are extensively avoided which through pulsating air inclusions might lead to defects in the applied coating.

Abstract: A method for uniformly coating a moving substrate by eliminating nonuniformities in the voscosity of the coating solution along the line where the solution is applied to the substrate. A viscosity-varying region is provided either inside or outside of a coating solution pocket in an extruder assembly. In one embodiment, the voscosity-varying region is provided by making the length of a slit through which the coating solution flows onto the support less than that of the pocket. In another embodiment, the viscosity-varying region takes the form of small-diameter tube through which the coating solution is supplied to one end of the pocket. In a third embodiment, a roller is disposed in the pocket and the diameter of the roller and the pocket are tapered towards the center. In a still further embodiment, the solution is supplied through a distributor.

  • Patent number: 4809885
Abstract: A highly-viscous material coating apparatus for use, e.g. in an automobile coating process, to coat a joint of a workpiece, may be mounted on a robot. It provides improved operation where the workpiece provides a reference surface parallel to the joint, where the workpiece provides a reference surface displaced from the joint at varying distances along the length of the joint, and where the workpiece provides no reference surface. Where a reference surface is available, an extendable spring-biased guide pin of the apparatus moves along the reference surface, and any positional errors are compensated-for by action of the spring. If the distance between the reference surface and the joint varies, the varying distance may be compensated for by various disclosed practices. The apparatus also can be used where no reference surface is provided by retracting the guide pin with respect to the nozzle and by controlling the robot so as to direct the nozzle to the joint.

  • Patent number: 4720798
Abstract: A conductor clad board from which the printed circuit board is produced is operatively retained for manipulation in a plotter controlled by a computer. Etchant-resist material is laid down in a printed circuit conductor pattern on at least one conductive sheet of the board by a marking instrument operatively manipulated by the plotter. The computer controls the application of the resist material in accordance with printed circuit board computer aided design information in the computer memory. Both conductive sheets of the board can be marked with resist after establishing the orientation of the board so the printed circuit patterns on opposite sides of the board occupy a predetermined aligned relationship. After etching, the board is again retained in the plotter and holes are drilled through the board by using drill apparatus operatively adapted for use and manipulation by the plotter.

  • Patent number: 4710399
Abstract: A method and mechanism to form minute drops of solder paste of uniform size spaced in desired patterns upon substrates of semi-conductor devices by extruding the paste under pressure through similar holes in a die while closely spaced above a substrate and, immediately after contacting the ends of minute columns of the paste with the substrate to adhere the same thereto, instantly raising the die to effect separation of the columns from the adhered ends on the substrates which comprise dots of paste of substantially uniform size which are spaced from each other. The paste is dispensed from a shallow reservoir above the die and defined by a flexible diaphragm positioned in opposition to the die and against which a pressure member operates against the diaphragm and paste contained in the reservoir to effect discharge of the paste under pressure as described above.

  • Patent number: 4708629
Abstract: A T die for extruding a low viscosity resin film coating especially in the manufacture of adhesive tapes. Uniform extrusion from the die is accomplished by the flow of melted resin from a supply manifold through a large number of narrow passageways into a smaller pressure equalizing manifold and out of a die slit extending the entire width of the die, the width of the die slit being adjustable in order to regulate the unevenness of the yield product.

  • Patent number: 4706603
Abstract: A coating apparatus for fabric webs carried along a counter roll includes an applicator which accomodates a chamber containing coating color to be applied onto the fabric web. The chamber is defined by spaced doctor blade and overflow plate and dam elements laterally sealing the chamber. For preventing a coating of the web along its edges, separate doctor assemblies are provided which are controlled independently of the dam plates.

  • Patent number: 4702196
Abstract: The invention concerns a coating device for coating a travelling web travelling past the coating device. A chamber for coating composition has an exit mouth, and pressurized coating composition exits the mouth into an application space between the mouth and the web. A doctor blade for the web is downstream of the application space. A damming strip with an edge spaced from the web is upstream of the application space. The damming strip defines an exit slot for excess coating composition in the application space. A flow body in the application space includes feed channels leading from the mouth toward the web and includes passage openings extending generally transversely of the feed channels for conducting the rotary flow of coating composition through the application space. The flow body has obstacles above the exit ends of the feed channels which make the flow therearound more uniform.

Abstract: The invention relates to laying of a bead of plastic, of the type with a butyl rubber base, on the periphery of a glass sheet intended to go into the composition of a multiple layer glass sheet. The bead is deposited with an extrusion unit having a nozzle. The glass sheet and nozzle are both able to be driven in movements amounting to translations, these translations of the glass sheet and the nozzle being performed in different directions.

  • Patent number: 4692351
Abstract: A method and apparatus for drawing a thick film circuit on a substrate (2) by discharging a paste from a paste discharge hole provided at one end of a drawing nozzle (1), the drawing nozzle (1) being located close to the substrate (2) and relatively moved with respect to the substrate (2). The discharge rate of the paste is controlled in accordance with the relatively moving speed between the drawing nozzle (1) and the substrate (2), thereby preventing variations of film thickness and line width caused by variations in the moving speed and making it possible to form a thick film circuit at a high speed and with high accuracy.

  • Patent number: 4688516
Abstract: A device for coating webs of material traveling over a backing roll to a controlled thickness, in which the coating material can be applied to the web with a slotted nozzle that extends over the total width of the web and in which the nozzle has an initial-flow regulation gap downstream of which a flow-regulation lip and an excess-removal lip demarcate a flow-regulation chamber. To allow more uniform and higher-quality application of the coating medium and, in particular, to ensure heavier coating weights and improved web printability with simple means, a barrier that demarcates the flow-regulation chamber from the traveling web of material is positioned to the vicinity of the excess-removal lip. The barrier can consist of a knife-like sheet-metal spring, of a roll, of a strip, or of a jet directed opposite to the direction in which the web is traveling. The barrier prevents an isolating layer of air from penetrating into the flow-regulation chamber.
