Patent number: 4951784Abstract: A process and apparatus for changing the oil in an engine and/or flushing and scrub cleaning the moveable components in the engine utilizing the internal lube oil distribution system of the engine. The device includes an oil filter adapter positioned in the oil filter boss, a remote oil filter mounting boss and inlet and outlet hoses connecting the two. The device is mounted in the engine compartment. Suitable pump-out and fill lines are connected to the device and can be releasably attached to an external pump device. When the device is employed to change oil, the external pump device is connected, a brief surge of purge gas is introduced to remove spent oil remaining in the oil filter and internal lube oil passages and spent oil is removed from the oil pan through the pump-out line. A measured amount of fresh oil is then introduced through the fill line and the internal lube oil distribution system. Once accomplished, the external pump device is uncoupled.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 1989Date of Patent: August 28, 1990Assignee: K. J. ManufacturingInventor: Ram D. Bedi

Patent number: 4890695Abstract: The invention relates to a prelubrication system for an engine. It is desirable to prelubricate relatively large engines to prevent possible damage of certain components such as the crankshaft and camshaft bearings. Engines that must be started in a matter of seconds are provided with prelube pumps that run continually. During long periods of continuous prelube lubrication fluid being pumped upward into the upper rocker arm area may find its way into combustion chambers and result in damage of engine components. The present system provides a fluid level control device that prevents lubrication fluid from reaching the upper rocker arm area of the engine when the engine is not running and disables the control device when the engine is running allowing the supply of lubricant to reach the upper rocker arm area.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1989Date of Patent: January 2, 1990Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Leslie C. Patent number: 4811706Abstract: Wear is minimized in a reciprocating internal combustion engine operated by fuel with abrasive particles, such as coal based fuel. A flexible diaphragm is used to equalize pressure in a ring pack area having lubricating film with the combustion chamber pressure. This equalization of pressure minimizes the pressure differential which might occur across an oil scraper ring separating the combustion chamber from the ring pack area. This minimizing of the pressure differential prevents or minimizes the passage of abrasive particles behind the oil scraper ring. A second ring, further from the combustion chamber end of the piston than is the oil scraper ring, serves as a high pressure sealing ring and separates the ring pack area from an oil blowby chamber. The second ring provides a predetermined amount of blowby from the ring pack area into the blowby chamber, which is also bounded by a third ring.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1988Date of Patent: March 14, 1989Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: Gary L. Patent number: 4776075Abstract: A method for manufacturing a piston of an internal combustion engine, especially for forming a piston gallery portion provided in the piston head for cooling the engine. A gallery member made of a metal pipe having a high thermal conductivity or a salt-core having a shape corresponding to the piston gallery is fixed to a fixing member having a peripheral rim and a plurality of fixing legs extended from the rim. The gallery member or the salt-core fixed to the fixing member is cast in the piston, body, and then, the fixing member is cut off from the piston body. The salt-core is melted away by pouring water. By this method, a piston of light weight and having high cooling efficiency can be manufactured.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1987Date of Patent: October 11, 1988Assignee: Aisin Seiki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yasuhiro Kawabata, Naoki Minamoto, Soichi Hara, Takanori Kamiya

Patent number: 4776431Abstract: Method and apparatus for changing oil in an internal combustion engine pierces an outer wall of an old oil filter containing old motor oil to form an opening in a lower portion of the filter wall. Old motor oil is drawn from the pierced oil filter into a container by suction through the filter wall opening and a suction conduit. The oil drain plug from a crankcase containing old motor oil is removed to form a drain opening in the crankcase, and old motor oil is drawn from the crankcase into a container by suction through the drain opening and a suction cup, to empty the crankcase of old motor oil. The drain opening is closed after emptying the crankcase of old motor oil by securing the drain plug in the drain opening. The pierced and drained old oil filter is replaced with a new filter and the drained crankcase is refilled with fresh motor oil.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1986Date of Patent: October 11, 1988Inventor: Denzil C. Patent number: 4774918Abstract: An engine lubricating system includes a lubricating oil supply mechanism having a plunger member adapted to be reciprocated in the axial direction in response to an engine output shaft to discharge lubricating oil, a control pin which is adapted to abut against the plunger member and is movable to change the stroke of the plunger member, thereby changing the discharge rate of the plunger member, and an electric actuator which moves the control pin to change the stroke of the plunger member. The engine operating condition is detected by way of at least both the engine load and the engine speed, and an electrical control unit outputs an electric control signal for controlling the electric actuator to change the discharge rate according to the engine operating condition.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1987Date of Patent: October 4, 1988Assignee: Mazda Motor CorporationInventors: Noriyuki Kurio, Hiroshi Yoshimi, Takuro Shigemura, Yuuji Shono

Patent number: 4771745Abstract: A structure of internal combustion engine comprises a cylinder member composed of a cylinder which accomodates a piston connected with a crankshaft, a crankcase provided to accomodate said crankshaft, a rocker case provided to accomodate a valve actuating mechanism, an oil return passage constituting means for leading oil in said rocker case into said crankcase, and a restraining means for restraining an air flow within said crankcase from entering into said oil return passage constituting means. By the effect of the restraining means provided in relation to the oil return passage constituting means, the air flow generated by the rotation of the crankshaft does not work as a dynamic pressure of hingering the flowingdown of oil.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1987Date of Patent: September 20, 1988Assignee: Mitsubishi Jidosha Kogyo Kabushiki KaishiInventors: Noboru Nakamura, Hiroyasu Endo, Sadakatu Ushio, Tetsuo Ebisudani, Mitsunori Ito, Tokiichi Mizukami, Mitsuru Kishimoto

Patent number: 4766859Abstract: A vertical shaft internal combustion engine particularly adapted for powering a rotary type lawn mower. The engine is provided with a baffled crankcase so as to minimize the adverse effects of oil "sloshing" within the crankcase while, at the same time, permitting flow between the baffles. In addition, an oil slinger arrangement is incorporated that is also baffled so as to reduce frothing in the crankcase to reduce aeration of the oil in the crankcase and also to direct the oil flow from the slinger.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1987Date of Patent: August 30, 1988Assignee: Yamaha Hatsudoki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Mutsuaki Miyaki, Yoshimi Tachibana, Kiyohiko Oguri, Yoshiharu Isaka

Patent number: 4766857Abstract: The invention relates to the arrangement of a balancing device in a casing, for a reciprocating piston engine, which permits the evacuation of the lubricating oil. The device comprises two balancing shafts (7, 8) disposed in a main part (19) of the casing (11) and each fastened to one or two intermeshing pinions (21, 22) situated in an auxiliary part of the casing. A bottom oil passage (25a) provided between the two parts of the casing enables the pinions, acting as a draining pump, to fully drain the casing.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1987Date of Patent: August 30, 1988Assignees: Automobiles Peugeot, Automobiles CitroenInventors: Gabriel Laine, Henri Zawadzki
